Here's a little more on the 49ers' failings on third downs . . .

First quarter

Third-and-22: Shaun Hill pass completed to Josh Morgan for 1 yard.

Third-and-1: Hill pass incomplete to Isaac Bruce.

Third-and-1: Glen Coffee run for minus-1 yard.

Third-and-5: Hill pass incomplete to Coffee.

Second quarter

Third-and-12: Hill pass complete to Vernon Davis for 11 yards.

(Note: 49ers converted fourth-down play with 25-yard pass to Morgan.)

Third-and-9: Hill pass incomplete to Bruce.

Third quarter

Third-and-2: Coffee run for 0 yards

Third-and-8: Hill pass complete to Davis for 4 yards

Third-and-15: Hill pass complete to Michael Robinson for 8 yards.

Fourth quarter

Third-and-17: Hill pass complete to Davis for 8 yards

Third-and-6: Coffee run for 2 yards.

The 49ers were 0-for-11 on third downs. The average yards-to-go on third downs was a shade under 9 yards. Hill completed 5 of 8 passes for 32 yards on third downs.

Listen to 49ers center Eric Heitmann address that issue on my postgame podcast.

Re-live the agony with a replay of my in-game blog and chat.

From the pages of today's Press Democrat . . . Singletary speaks volumes after Favre lifts Vikings to victory . . . and "Coffee not pleased with performance."

Running back Frank Gore's right ankle strain will be evaluated today. The club will seriously consider promoting rookie running back Kory Sheets from the practice squad, as Gore is likely to miss a couple games. Without the benefit of any medical information, the 49ers' wisest move might be to rest him Sunday against the Rams and again Oct. 11 against the Falcons. Then, the 49ers have a bye week, and return with an Oct. 25 game at Houston.

Hey, Minneapolis is a pleasant place and all, but I'm not a fan of hanging out in airports. And around this place, you have to be careful about choosing the correct men's room.

Anyway, my flight back from Minneapolis this morning is delayed at least an hour. I'm still planning to be in Santa Clara for Mike Singletary's 12:15 p.m. press conference. This evening, I'll be speaking to the 49ers Goal Rushers, the booster club in Stockton. Hope to see some of you there.

Raye's play calling causes a lot of 3rd and longs, then on the 3rd and shorts he runs it everytime. If I were a DC I'd love how Raye makes it much easier to call the defenses.

Haven't heard one reporter or commentator mention the fact that all Roman had to do was push the receiver out of bounds while he was still in the air so the receiver couldn't get both feet down in bounds instead of diving to knock the ball away. Roman is absolutely HORRIFIC in pass coverage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gilroy, I agree whole heartily.

The 9ers are such as easy team to scheme against. I think we are psyching ourselves out. More play action, more screens, more delays. More vertical passes to VD.

I was sitting next to my wife and other bar folks watching the 1pm games (Redskins are a huge disappointment), and the 9ers had the now infamous (ok maybe that is a little dramatic) 3rd and 6 with minute and a half to go. I mentioned to everyone, "watch the Niners are going to run the ball, and put the pressure back on their defense against an at the moment a non-glorified future HOF. "

Too many times in this short season we have gone 3 and out or put the defense back on the field. You can't win every game like that. I had a feeling this one was going to get away from us. The football gods struck. And they struck HARD. Sing is write we need to feel the loss inside and move on, but we need to make the write adjustments to WIN THESE GAMES. Put them away as Sing notes in the presser. Play-off teams pass for the first down, game over!

Matt, just be careful not to do any toe tapping in the restrooms at that airport!! Thanks for all your work back there.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I think our 3rd down play calling was not that bad. In the 1st quarter, Bruce and Coffee both dropped passes that would have easily been 1st downs. On the 3rd and shorts, our o-line MUST block better on the running plays if we hope to be a playoff team. The 4th quarter runs were fine to run out the clock.

And finally, the biggest positive on the 3rd and longs is we didn't turn the ball over or get sacked. Now I'm not saying the playing calling was perfect (a go route to the backup tight end on a corner?), but we did enough to win on the road against one of the top 2 teams in the NFC. Great learning experience for down the road!

Matt,

When is Roman going to be permanently benched or released? He single handedly we cost us a chance at the playoffs if we leave him in there. Teams continue to attack him because they know how awful he is. I'm sure Favre remembered him from their days in Green Bay and it wasn't by chance that he threw the ball to the area that he was covering. On behalf of us fans, please put heat on Singletary during his presser to question why Roman still plays. You can bring up examples from prior year like the Miami, New Orleans, and Dallas games (I know I'm missing others, too). Thank you.

Great breakdown; I was about to post S-Hill's completion percentage for the 3rd-down situations as well. Note too that 7 of the 11 are 3rd-&-long (over 5 yds) in the deafening Metrodrome against, more often than not, a fired-up Vikings D.
Raye is either too stubborn or, like Ted Tollner, utterly obtuse as a playcaller.

Hi Matt,

If Sheets gets added, who is your favorite to get cut from the current roster?

I hope its not Jason Hill!

Yes its a loss but a game we should have won. Anyways, playcalling cost us this game. It was over with 4:44 left in the game, they punted and all we needed was a first down. At some point you have to take a chance, you cant win games being stubborn when the defense know its coming. C'mon Jimmy Raye, a little cat and mouse buddy, throw the ball and catch the defense off guard. Well bounce back cause if anything, we have shown we can be a resilient team.

I agree that Raye's play calling was horrendous and caused alot of those 3rd and long situations. My thinking before the game was to activate Sheets who has some edge speed since the Vikes run defense up the middle is so outstanding. So far my impression of Raye's play calling is extremely negative. Mike Golic blasted Raye this morning for the 3 runs up the middle with the game on the line. He called that series Prevent Offense. There appears to be absolutely ZERO creativity with Raye. If I can predict the play before it happens I would think d-coordinators around the league are going to destroy this offense now that they have some film to study.

Having said all that, I think we have to keep in mind that Gore went out early and parts of the o-line missed significant time. Now that their best player is injured Raye will earn his money. Let's see what he's got in his repertoire.

.....blaming the play calling is a cop out...

its not like the players dont know the plays....that is what training camp and the weekday is for......

its starts from the top....no more excuses.....the guy that holds the ball most has to make better decisions to WIN not to play safe.....

the same criteria for A.Smith, JTO should be applied here..........our QB is not making everybody better......we have talent and we are not using them......

It took a Hail Mary pass to beat us, you second guesser wonders. 19 times out of 20, it fails. If we throw incomplete on 3rd and 6 (which we had done all day), then Farve has a minute and a half PLUS a time out. He wouldn't have needed a Hail Mary. Nobody expected us to win this game, but we did essentially win it and all you pseudo play calling experts can do is whine. If we throw incomplete, you'd say we were morons to do that. If we get sacked and fumble, you'd say we were morons to pass. No matter what happens, you're gonna complain. Even when we win, you complain about this play or that. Especially about the PLAY CALLING (which, of course, you're all really expert at - AFTER THE FACT). How about the players didn't execute the play or the Vikings have a pretty good defense. Second guessers suck! Wimps. Baloney throwers. Useless drivel heaving know-nothings. Great game by the Niners! Dumb ass luck for the Vikings. Case closed.

Blitzonic and Fabulous: You are right on the money but directing your comments at the wrong person. Jimmy Raye has zero authority. Singletary is the person responsible for the game plan and play calling. Raye does what the boss tells him to do. Why do you think Singletary hired Raye in the first place?

What we have is a control freak head coach who has a simplistic idea of offensive football and who is not willing to allow his offensive coordinator any autonomy. How many head coaches arounf the NFL order their coordinators not to talk to the press?

I will admit Singletary's emotional style has had a positive impact on the defense. I guess Defenseive football is a lot more emotion based than the Offensive side. Clearly the entire defense (except for Roman) is playing way better than they did in the entire Nolan era. However, in my humble opinion Sing's conservative playcalling is holding back the offense.

We are still in a good position to win the NFC west. record. We should be able to crush the Rams next week and if Singletary / Raye trust Sean Hill and open up the offense we have a good chance to upset Atlanta at home. A 4-1 record going into the Bye week would be awsome.

oneniner,

I try to give you the time while others in this blog don't. Maybe they all have a longer history with you. Since I'm fairly new I guess it took me awhile to see what your agenda is.

Because, that is my real question. What is your motive on this blog?

a) You just want to be an antagonist. You get a rise out of making silly unjustified statements about Hill. It causes people on this blog to quickly respond back and you feel empowered.

b) You are related to A. Smith or really close to him. Or S. Hill did something terribly wrong to you in the past. This would be very understandable. Not sure if I would start a PR campaign against Hill, but depending on the severity and your time it could be justified to bash Hill.

c) You somehow are affiliated with the Pressdemocrat and want to boost page views for revenue purposes. So you find a topic people are passionate about (QB) and make unwarranted statements about a QB change.

d) You are young in age or a simpleton. This statement is in noway an attempt to be offensive. I do however feel it is an option to consider as one ponders your false statements and continuous unjustified claims that S. Hill is under performing. gain, I am not trying to be offense just trying to see the truth.

e) something I'm not thinking of and don't want to spend more time writing about.

I've played division one college level football. I have a pretty good understanding of the game. I like picking players and teams apart and I enjoy good banter about all things football. I'd like to keep a dialog, but please make an intelligent claim against Hill or I will just skip over your posts as most do now.

Just about every fan, league analyst and coach agrees Hill is the right QB we have now, and is surprisingly performing better then expected. Expected is the key, he is not Brady, but damn he does make the play when called upon. Com'on Raye call this guys number.

Go Niners!!!

In the NFL today, you pass to set-up the run, not the other way around.

I wonder how long it will take Singletary to realize that you can't run against an 8 or 9 man box...? You can't line up 6 or 7 blockers against 8 or 9 defenders and expect to run the ball reliably. I don't care how tough you think you are. It's simple numbers. You've got to clear some of those guys out of the box.

That's done with the passing game. Doesn't have to be 50 yard passes, just 10 yards or so. Enough to get those linebackers and safeties backed up a little bit to open up some space.

Many have tried. All have failed.

Great play by the Vikings to win the game. BUT it should have never happened. How do you not blitz on that play?

Better yet how do you get the ball with the lead and 1:50 on the clock and give it back with 1:40? PATHETIC!!!!!

Look, Hill is not a top 10 ten QB. I mean he got saved on that pick in the end zone by a delay of game penalty. BUT, when the Niner's have needed a scoring drive, they ride his arm to get it. Why not ride his arm to get a first down or two? The Vikings were ripe for some play action, a couple of dink & dunks with the clock still running would have done the job. If you keep the ball away from the other team, you win. If you make your defense decide it, ESPECIALLY after the offense doing a 3 & out two times in a row, you only have a chance to win. I'd rather go for the win than a chance to win.

So, in conclusion, great play to win the game, DB had no defense on that one. Perfect throw, great catch. But next time, let's not give them the ball back.

We are going to end up picking some out of work running back or making a trade for a RB if we don't start mixing it up. Both RB's we have are banged up. the def is just teeing off on us. Sheets is small, he will go down too. Slamming your head into a brick wall every time will wear out team out by mid-Nov.

Basically when we are pushing for a play-off spot. Then we will be so wasted we will loose in the first round. This team had a physical training camp and will play punch you in the mouth football for 17 games.... we have a bye week early. This might not work in our favor. I'm concerned that we will not have enough in the tank to finish.

..dude get over yourself...am not in the mood today especially after the loss...

...like i care what people post on here.....what benefit will it be to me to take you guys seriously.

Once i close my browser - my mind is not even close to here.

What is your motive on this blog? - Read MM posts and comment with my opinions - its that simple.

..its my opinion S.Hill is the reason we are not good on offense - win or lose

if you can't counter my opinion with a reasonable argument - then just ignore it....

i dont know why its so hard for most of you just to ignore me.....unless you do believe i am right....

...most of you come and go.....i have been here since day 1.....this is not going to change...deal with it or just ignore it.

"I'd like to keep a dialog, but please make an intelligent claim against Hill"

(give me one unintelligent claim i made about Hill?)

i understand most of you refuse to debate me on the facts.....but rather call me names or talk about A.Smith even though he his not playing

Well Mr. DEFEND THIS - Shaun Hill 0 for 8 on 3rd downs

"..........Third Down Efficiency 0/11 - 0% (8 passes by S. HILL)"

Skeebers, no second guessing. I was screaming for some play action dink and dunks on our last possession and was screaming for a blitz on that final play. Yes it was a GREAT play. But a great play that NEVER should have happened.

The difference is you are OK with them trying to hold on to a win. I'm looking for them to seal a win. Being able to hold onto a win means you'll have a winning record. Being able to seal a win means you'll be a contender, not a pretender.

The good thing about this team is Singletary will learn from this. These mistakes won't be made again. If they are; don't expect any playoff runs. Teams in the playoffs will have QB's and personel capable of making those type of plays.

...just another point ....about play calling...

if it was that bad ..Shaun Hill could have audible out of them.....

stop with the excuses....Shaun Hill sucks and the defense deserves a better QB playing......our WR's deserves a QB that can get them the ball

Shaun Hill is so horrible they had to run the same plays over and over....

Matt, any chance the Niners bring in somebody? Like Duckett if still available for that ground and pound O. I don't think Coffee has been great and why rush Gore back.

Can someone please put onewhiner out of his misery!!! LOL! Dude get over it. Alex is not going to start for this team, unless Hill gets hurt.

The team was an underdog going into the game and a lot of people never gave them a real shot. They had a legit chance of winning that game. Yes the play calling was not the best. Why arent you calling out the receivers for dropping those passes...or Delanie Walker for cutting the route short...or Coffee dropping a quick pass that would have led to a first down (on a 3rd down). You cant put this whole thing on Hill.

If you are going to point fingers then point them at the players who all had a hand in the loss. Not just the QB.

...not only do i have to read all this uninformed comments - i have to listen to the media about the game all week.....

hurts even worse it is Favre

this sucks.....

Ok, there we go, a question or argument about Hill's play. Not a great one, but one to consider. I will attempt to answer as to not bog down this blog all week regarding the 0-11 on third down. (Which by the way is piss poor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

I'm not sure what the numbers 0-11 mean in regards to Hill... I have to look at the game and situation. I will try to catch on reply this week. I am suspicious about Raye's offense. This was the first complete game I saw... in a bar with a lot of beer to say the least.

The first obvious thing to look at is did we even pass in all those situations. Second, what was the down an distance?
Third did Hill have time to make an accurate pass, what was the coverage?

Hill is-what-he-is, he is not a franchise QB. Yet, no other QB on our roster can perform better. Why NOT get off the whole QB issue and talk about fixable problems on this team.

I have been impressed by the Coaching staff. I can't believe the criticism they are taking. They lost, on the road, against one of the best teams in the NFC in the last two seconds.

What we need, and always have needed, is better O Line Play. We don't have a good right tackle. It was the most glaring need after last season and still is.

We have some pieces of the puzzles needed and if we had these we would be a top tier team.

1) Right Tackle
2) Wide Receiver - Sign Crabtreee!
3) Superior Pass Rusher

As for QB, Hill is getting the job done. He will never be great but he certainly is better than we have had for 7 years.

.."Yet, no other QB on our roster can perform better."

SEE THAT IS THE ISSUE.

You can say "but please make an intelligent claim against Hill"

And you making the same unintelligent comment - HOW CAN YOU SAY NO QB ON THE ROSTER CANT PERFORM BETTER

HOW DO YOU KNOW THIS?....

I mean common sense dictates your statement is dumb,...i mean cmon dude

None of the other QB's have played in the regular season and when they did play in the preseason they did play well.......WE ALL SAW HOW THEY PERFORMED WITH THE SAME OC...

YOU SEE MY POINT? - how do u know nobody can play better than Hill.....

@Marco from Stockton - how can you say its better than the last 7 yrs......when all we have seen is 1 player at QB

how do you know this for sure?

But when i make my opinions - i am the crazy one....

guys can we please use logic for once

"The first obvious thing to look at is did we even pass in all those situations. Second, what was the down an distance?
Third did Hill have time to make an accurate pass, what was the coverage? "

You know i am all for a fair critique.....HOW COME YOU GUYS DON'T LOOK AT A.SMITH THE SAME WAY?

You just gave 3 excuses why we cant look at Hill

Well did you say the same when A.Smith was playing?

Hill drove the team for had the team in position for 3-0 and the defense didn't hold.

Look at Sanchez and Stafford as rookies. They look way better than A. Smith ever has. If he can't beat out a journeyman QB like Hill, what does that say about him? The only hope I have for him now is maybe Coach Sing can work his magic and turn him around like he did V. Davis. Both Hill and Smith are placeholders until Nate Davis or another QB in the draft is ready.

Matt,

Could we PLEASE have a feature on here to block specific users comments....?

Thanks.

How many teams that have had the offensive coordinator turn around of the 49ers, and have the same success this team has? The 49ers revolving door of coordinators is the reason why a QB like S.Hill isn't settled in. But all things considered, S.Hill is doing a very good job with what he has, and will only get better. 2-1, with the 1 not being a shameful effort.

Haters need to go kick rocks in a hurry. Go Niners!

...see that point is not valid....

cuz again you have to wonder what will happen if thiose rookies were in A.Smith situation....

look at the current roster of tghe lions and jets and compare it with the niners....

again if we are going to critique a player lets look at the whole picture...

there is a huge difference btw the team A.Smith played with compared to this team Hill is playing with....

this team is more talented.....AND STILL OUR WR'S ARE NOT GETTING THE BALL

..."The 49ers revolving door of coordinators is the reason why a QB like S.Hill isn't settled in."

SEE AGAIN THE DOUBLE STANDARD

So i guess this does not apply to A.Smith settling in...

...S.Hill threw 2 picks this past game (the second was erased cuz of a penalty)

you have to wonder why would anyone with a brain throw those passes.....

i have no doubt we can play better at the QB position with A.Smith or N.Davis......no doubt at all.

Don't feed the trolls!

Oneniner used to be amusing in a pathetic, whiny little girl sort of way, like the enjoyment one gets from fingernails scratching a blackboard, but now it is just visual pollution similar to covering the Grand Canyon with billboards. It's a blight on this blog. I would like to come to this blog and enjoy the comments but this is getting ridiculous. Really. We have reached the saturation point, Matt. . His horn only has one note. I think it's time to put someone on the IR list

We should simply ignore him. Don't rise to his baiting.
He is not intrested in a reasoned discussion.

There is no doubt in my mind that even if Hill threw for 400 yards and 6 TDs oneniner will come up with something negative to say. It is useless agruing with him, he has a closed mind when it comes to Hill.

i say "D."

he must be young because he's stuck on a subject that he can't figure out.

Hello Mr. Crabtree,

Please sign with us as soon as possible because we need you more than ever now because #21 Frank Gore is out for at least 2 weeks.

We could have used your immense talent yesterday Mr. Crabtree. I know that all of the 49ers fans still love and respect you and awaiting for arrival.

You're the one that can turn around our franchise!!!

oneniner, I remember when A Smith started doing better his second year Steve Young (HOF QB and football analyst) said this:

"...I was wondering if Alex Smith could haven play QB..."

The point I'm making, and I believe most on this blog are making is this:

The Niners messed up A. Smith's chances of being a franchise QB for them. Everyone knows this now, he needed to be groomed. He was young, a good athlete, smart, and a gun slinger for Utah's (key point) pass happy offense.

With that said, if you are a true leader, a primetime player, you step up and become that by over coming challenges on your team and fight through the crap. BECAUSE you are a superstar. Alex Smith is NOT an NFL superstar. He is uncomfortable in the pocket, in his reads and gets hurt. I'm afraid he is another Carr, Harrington, Couch and others. Those guys came out of school with more potential then Smith and failed.

S. Hill leads this freakin team by making minimal mistakes... yes not taking chances, but makes the plays when called upon. We are winning. We are a scrappy team and this is how the whole season will play out until evals and adjustments are made in the off season.

Smith couldn't out perform Hill. Dude, Alex is a bum. Sorry man, but he is a bum. There is something truly great happening in SanFran, start looking at the positives Hill brings.

Reply to Houston 9er:
I called for Sheets for Minn game on this site for the reasons you note - Vike's stout middle. Would have won game, maybe by ten if we had.

"I WANT WINNERS!"
"WE'RE NOT A CHARITY! WE DON'T GIVE GAMES AWAY!"

famous phrases. look, i'm not one to second guess any professional coaches in the nfl. i'm not one to be a living coach/qb, BUT...c'mon! are (coaches) that stubborn that they can't see that their run wasn't getting them 1st downs? all they needed was ONE first down, and the game was over. i know the argument was "if they pass, and drop it, it would stop the clock. one mistake and they can intercept it." gore went down, coffee did below average. so, you ask hill to win the game. and he basically did! so you can't trust him to throw a slant? maybe a screen? to get the 6 yards that's needed to win the game? niners rely on the defense way too much.

i noticed that the coaches are stubborn and have a big ego. please, can you go back and learn from this?? we called for nolan's head when he was doing the same gutless execution. this will catch up with the niners if they don't step it up.

Alex Smith will not be on this team next year.

This is so true, we can't afford to throw games away b/c we have a brutal schedule next month. Our offense is not high octane so we need every win. Thank god the rest of the division lost, but I would hate for a playoff spot or home field advantage to come down to this loss.

I've always wondered - for longer than some of your are alive - why you don't practice Hail Mary D with two of your best receivers. They don't have to tackle anyone, just get the damn ball. They're taller & faster & will trained at going to the ball.
Truth is, most coaches have average I.Q.s & few are innovative. In the NFL most are recycled product.
But don't get more wrong on negativity - this is a good team & with better play calling could be a factor in the playoffs.

I can't believe the Jimmy Raye is taking the heat for Poor Offensive Line play. All they needed to do was open up one hole and they will have a first down. the real criticism should be the last play, why weren't the 2 safeties at the goal line, one on each side. everyone knows that the hail mary is coming. That is what Coach Sing should be asking Manusky. i think Manusky messed up..... don't blame the players.

with the offense being so stagnant on majority of plays, the defense will be wore down by the 10th game..... even if the niners make the playoff, it will be hard to maintain that level of defensive play.

Gore is overrated. injures too easily...
I will trade Harvin for Crabtree any day....... Scott, you should be fired!!!! Harvin is the impact player of this draft.

oneniner - i have to agree with you on this (and i usually don't agree on anything with you!). hill had the option to audible out on this. i'm thinking "WTF?? just audible out and get the short pass to get the completion." but i know because this is hill's first starting season, he's trying to play along with the system. even if the play calling is atrocious!

just to let you know. if smith was starting, the niners would be 0-3 at this point.

Matt, same question others and myself keep asking: Can you ask Singletary why Jason Hill is not suiting up?

Thanks!

Hello CraPtree,

If can read this, please do us a favor and just go away. We don't need greedy dirtbags like you. You are all about yourself. We loyal 49er fans don't give a sh*t about your skills. We had TO. TO is 100 times better and we got rid of him

We would glad to take loss like the one yesterday than win with dirtbags like you. And when you enter the draft next year and sign with a team like Cowboys, please take the pathetic fans who idolize you because you can catch few balls even though you are fisrt rated ***mbag.

workingfool, our OL was over matched. The Vikes have arguable the best run D in the league over the past 3 years. There is only so mush heart and digging for that extra effort. If you are over matched you are over match. The COACH need to make adjustments. Be a little more creative.

I know right, Harvin is the perfect slot, next to Welker... but give him time. Harvin is quick can play wildcat RB or whatever. I always wanted him b/c I'm FL bias.

I'd like to see a trade for B. Edwards before the draft. Trade a third rounder and a player. Too bad Mangini wont take Crabtree.

49erthor, how do you know Hill had the option to audible out of the play? Did you hear that somewhere? I would be interested to explore this, as a Monday morning QB...hehehe.

But I'm thinking the play came in and was not to be changed... for the most part... I bet those players in the huddle were like another run on 3 and 6!?!?!?! WTF...

One thing to note in defense of Hill...we have needed late touchdowns in every game so far this year, and he has come through. One need only note his fourth quarter production, especially when the score is within 7 pts:

4th Qtr: 23/30, 235 yds, 2 TD, 0 INT, 120.8 QB RTNG
4th Qtr within 7: 14/19, 169yds, 2TD, 0 INT, 135.6 QB RTNG

boo hiss on Mark Roman ......... boo hiss. At least the guy is consistent ---- consistently unable to make a play

obviously, when you talk the talk, you have to walk the walk. "run at will", "we will run when they know the run is coming..." isn't this what the offensive philosophy is from preseason until now....

now how about adjusting your playcalling and philosophy to fit your personnel. with Gore out, do you still want to run the ball 60% of the time?

while you have some good skill players (VD, Bruce, Morgan, Battle, Walker....), why aren't you tailoring to your offensive strengths. how about 60% pass..

when you run into a wall once or twice, any common sense person will want to run around the wall, right?

I agree. We kept trying to make a statement on the ground, except we couldn't. A few decent passes would have opened up the running game. In fact, some of our best runs came when we were being successful through the air and used the ground game as a complement. Raye has to be more willing to pass and trust Hill and the receiving corps to make plays when we are being shut down on the ground like week one against the Cards and this week against the Vikes. Hill did what he has done every game so far -- score a late TD to take the lead. We just didn't close this time.

I called for Sheets on here last week as well. I always think the coaches that work with the team must know more than me. After seeing Raye's play calling, I'm not sure they do know more than me. The X motion TB dive play is incredibly predictable. Morgan's block serves no purpose on that play. The motion gives the play away and in many cases Morgan is left blocking no one. Don't blame this one on the o-line play. There are 6 guys trying to block 8 or 9 against the Vike's. There is absolutely no way that play was going anywhere. I'm not sure if Sing and/or Raye are stubborn or just plain ignorant. Hopefully, they'll learn from this but my nickname for Raye, Slingblade Raye, is dangerously close to becoming reality.

As far as the last 3 and out, I beleive the coaches wanted to just punt the ball away and make the Vikes beat them in the air. 3rd and 6 yards and you call a run against a stingy Vikes def, there is NOWAY you can expect to get the first down.

*sigh* this one hurts, hurts real bad. I hope to see some adjustments next week and the week after. We have to win the rest of the game going into the bye to make up for this. We have to prove we can beat a top teams in the NFC. Atlanta must go down to make up for this.

I agree with your assessment, though I am kind of surprised they'd be as willing as they were to give Favre a chance to make a late drive down the field against the 49ers. Were they watching football at all in the 90s when Favre made it an annual mission to crush the hopes and dreams of every 49er fan in the nation? I just hope we DO meet them in the playoffs, and get our revenge.

Also just to add my two cents. If a team knows you are going to run .... play action .............

Amazing how the same things we needed before the draft are the same things we need now. How would things be different if we drafted a tackle in the first round and a pass rusher in the 2nd?

shawnrhod - throughout the mini and training camp, they were saying how s. hill would be able to call audibles because of the offense jimmy raye was implementing. hill was basically given permission to make changes to the play. the reason it was brought up was because martz did not allow audibles last season.

all i know was that once i read that, i said, "alright! now that hill is allow to call audibles, we can get adjust to the other teams defense and not get stuck with something that don't work."

i guess hill is too gun shy on pulling the trigger. ;)

Matt, I have to agree with the blocking a user option. You dont have to make it so the person is banned just make it so that each user has the option to ignore or black out specific users posts.

Everyone else, understand this, Any valid point with facts I have made in the past to "he who is to remain unnamed" has been ignored by said person. He will not reasonably discuss anything with you if you try to prove it to him.

Stop feeding the Troll.

Most have been ignoring him until this post and it was working but now look how wild he has run just from the attention he got after an absence of attention for the past several days.

Skeebers, I understand what you are saying but I was cringing everytime I saw Morgan motion and then line up next to the outside facing the sideline. (forget what this formation is called) Everyone knew what was next even the Def who as soon as that happened every player but a safety would crowd the box. It was sickening I did not second guess this after the game I was sickened by it the moment we did it. Each and everytime. I was hoping for a fake hand off with a bootleg and morgan running ahead of hill to either block or get behind the safety. It never happened not once. At the very least if he wasnt going to get a first and had to slide down he couldve burned a few more seconds off the clock.

With that said I like the philosophy of run first mentality but we should be smart enough to be able to take advantage of the other teams when they over commit to the run. We have yet to even try to do that. I am hoping, with unrealistic beliefs that we are just trying to get to the playoffs and wont start pulling out those plays until we get there or need a play to get us there but I just think that's a dream on my part and wont actually happen.

Just one time do that formation and play action (high % pass) it to morgan who should only have to beat 1 guy for a TD.

Houston 9er: lol... I so agree with you on the x motion TB dive. every time i saw josh morgan go into motion and line up next to tackle, I threw up in my mouth a little. it's quite possibly the most predictable play in history. now, if they can figure out how to run play action from it, that might be something.

having said that... the story here isn't the play calling (although I'm not a fan). it's certainly not the lack of quality qb play. it's not the play of the line, which was pretty decent in the 4th quarter, and remember sims was our left tackle for part of the quarter, including that last 3rd down. (might have been on singletary's mind when they decided to run?). it's not even the 0-11 on 3rd down (the poor playcalling on 2nd and longs had more to do with that) all these things and the 49ers still should have won this game

the story is that the 49ers gave up a 32 yd pass play in the end zone when the only thing that could beat the 49ers was a 32 yd pass in the end zone. and that my friends, is unacceptable.

great throw by favre though... i hate the guy, but you gotta hand it to him.

PEOPLE!!!
Pull it together... yeah it hurts, it hurts really bad to lose like that. But QUIT with all the shoulda, coulda, woulda. We lost a close game to a good team by mere inches. But damn it was one heck of a game to watch. Our D SHUTDOWN A.P again. They fly all over the place and hit like no ones business. V.D WELCOME TO THE NFL!!! He is living up to his title of Captain. No rants, no raves... just a chest pat and making BIG plays.

Oneniner - you are the biggest idiot on this blog. You have ZERO credibilty. ZILCH. Shaun Hill should bitch slap your dumbass.

We will crush the Rams next week and then have another big game vs the Falcons and I'm gonna say it now...

5 - 1 going into Bye... NINERS!!!

make it 3 cents - Maybe the QB is not good running play actions....

I mean we all know A.Smith is the better QB when it comes to play actions....

I actually paid attention to Hill fundamentals when throwing the ball.....the guy never steps in his throws

its either he throws a quick straight pass to V.Davis or a comeback route to Bruce....

Nothing else

what pisses me of the most his when he does that happy feet back when snaping the ball, he throws the ball while fading back ....its like he his already worried about the pressure coming...

...those straight throws to V.Davis is going to get someone hurt......

at least V.davis is improving - he his jumping back now to catch those passes....

Ronnie, I have to disagree with you on this one. I think the play calling is the story. Even if that pass by Farve didn't go and we win, I think we will be having this same discussion. Why is our D back on the field. We had the ball with under 2 minutes to play. Game over. Hill was asked to score a TD he did, as he did in AZ. Why can't we ask Hill to make a third down and then take a knee??

...we actually did try an empty backfield formation something you wont expect from a running team and guess what Hill the Qb did.....nothing.

...the OC obviously was trying his best to help Hill....

its that losing mentality - we wont change until we lose

49erthor: qb's don't audible on a whim. i'm not sure why people don't get that? audibles are actually the same as any other play. the play comes in... the team lines up... the qb checks out the defensive set and if he sees them lined up in a particular set that either can be exploited, or that might give the defense an advantage based on the offensive play, then the qb audibles to a particular play that was already decided upon beforehand based on the defensive alignment. there might be 6-10 potential audible plays, but it's completely pre-determined. it's not like these guys just go up and can change the plays on a whim... or to any play they like.. they have to see very specific things.. and then depending on what he sees, goes to a predetermined play that the coordinator has already assigned to go against that alignment.

I wouldn't presume to know what s. hill saw when he went to the line of scrimmage... and the only qb that's allowed to call his own plays at the line currently is peyton manning.

oneniner, I'll argue VD up the seem is EXACTLY what we need. He is fast enough to get ontop of the LB and split the safties in cover two. That will open our wide outs, big time. This is going to set up some big plays for us this year by a wide out, not named Crabtree.

I've been calling for VD seem routes ALL year.

Or a deep streak to Morgan - St. Louis

Or a deep fade to Bruce - AZ

Or a 20 out to Hill - Dallas

Or a hot read to Gore - AZ

you have ZERO... again ZERO Cred on this blog

Not going to attempt to catch up on all posts, too many negatives looking for a head on a platter. I'm disappointed with the loss, but we played better than many gave us credit. Seemed like much of what I read last week recognized the Vikes as a good team and the 9ers as a favorable schedule leading up to the game between unbeatens. The 9ers should have gained respect with this game. There's lots to improve on, but we played one of the play-off bound favorites and gave them a real scare, I'll bet they are not so confident this morning, knowing that they dodged a bullet.

Still atop the NFC West.

shawnrhod: you don't have to try to sell me on tickets to the "Jimmy Raye can't call a play for his life" train... I'm already on board. having said that, there is almost no acceptable scenario that tht pass should be expected to be complete. it's either just dumb luck (or defenders run into each other or fall down) or a lapse in coverage.

and remember... if dre bly holds on to that gimme interception on that route he jumped, he's in the endzone and it's 31-21... and we aren't even having this discussion.

I agree with you on the playcalling. I hope raye is just an interim solution. i honestly don't know how much autonomy he has when it comes to playcalling. it's actually something i'd like to ask matt.

An observation regarding Singletary's sideline blow up at Delanie Walker. This of course came after Walker gave up on a pass route and thus easily let the defender intercept the ball. I think there was more to this than that one play.

My brother tapes and reviews every game. He pointed out to me several times in the first two games where Walker made no attempt to make a down field block. I know he is not the best of blockers but he made no attempt at all. One particular play in the Arizona game was a TE screen to VD. Walker was the lead blocker on the play yet he ran right by the first two defenders then started looking back to see if the play was over. It was, as the two defenders he had run past stopped VD for little or no gain.

So for what it's worth I think the coaches blow up was as much about Walker's whole season so far as just that one play. We know how Singletary feels about everyone on offense being a blocker.

You are hating on this formation, but just remember that Seattle was doing the same thing when they saw it but thier defense could not execute and Gore busted them for 79 and 80 yard runs respectively. He did that against an 8 man front and 9 man front. Gore being hurt and Minny's D being alot more disciplined than Seattle's has a bunch to do with the ineffectiveness. You can say what you want about the play-calling but personally I like the fact that we line up and try playing a man's style of ball. The D knows what is coming and we are gonna force them to stop it. It forces teams to always respect the run and keeps that clock churning and tilts that time of possession in our favor. Now, we must be much more effective on third downs but sometimes you just have to tip your hat to your opponent. Minnesota is a much more evolved version of what we strive for. A little more talent in the front 7 on both sides of the ball but we had them in their own house until Favre and Roman conspired to write a fairy tale for Sportscenter and NFL Network to play all year.

TE seam routes and playaction should be the focus this week on offense. Oh, and activate Sheets and put this Spurlock project to rest.

....when ever have you seen V.davis catch that ball with the safety behind him.....NEVER

He always gets hits by the safety....every time

Now he his jumping backwards for it.....i just pray he doesn't get hurt....

...."That will open our wide outs, big time."

WHEN...WHEN ....IS THIS GOING TO HAPPEN

One game is luck
Two games is getting better
Three games - It is what it is...

..WHEN ARE OUR WR's going to be big time.....

..we have seen 3 games already when are you all going to face the facts...Hill does not have the throwing power to get them the ball....

Ike: you're absolutely right. that same play was responsible for at least one of the long runs... i'll have to go look at the film, but it might have been both. the thing that bothers me is, every coordinator on the SF schedule watched the film of those runs. and if they only go up that same hole (a gap, i think?) in that formation, and never run to the other side, or run play action from it, then it becomes really easy to defend. and so far this season, when they line up in that formation, then the call has been hb into the a gap. it got seattle when they first tried it... but why not try a play action out of it, to give the d something to think about?

I am so proud of myself, I did a quick scan of the posts looking for those from posters I respect. I hope our favorite-one-to-argue-with never changes his photo of Young, I find it very easy to simply bypass. I did notice that people continue to engage. I'm convinced he's merely one who likes getting folks riled up.

I'd like to suggest a change to the line, "do not feed the trolls" to "do not feed the chimp." Remember the chimp in the second-rate zoo that would respond to crowds by scooping up his own excrement and throwing it at the crowd? I think this example speaks for itself.

Do not feed the chimp.

We don't need big time WR's to win games..we need a big-time QB....that guy does not exist right now on our roster...A. Smith can be big time but needs much more time to learn the offense and Nate Davis can't even understand big time if you show him a picture of it...Hill will continue to win games and that is fine by me

oneniner, I don't think I said VD will be behind safeties I said or should of said behind LBs. The safeties will always be in a position for the big hit. That is called going up/over the middle... welcome to football the safety says licking his chops.

To answer you next rant regarding, when will the 9ers go to the WRs on a fly or skinny post. Well now that we have shown VD can catch and Hill can hit that inside seam. Next game we run the same play, Hill looks right at Davis after his play action, safety bites a bit on play action and VD. Morgan runs either a double move or attempts to block, per play action. Hill drills a 30-40 yarder to Morgan down the sidelines - TD.

The next time the play comes. DB is off a bit, Morgan breaks his rout off for a 18 yard out - First down.

well just showing a different wrinkle for that formation isn't bad, especially against a team that was selling out against the run like Minny was...but we still had that game for all of our faults and third down ineptitude. Sing is for real and McGM won't be going anywhere with the team performing like this....you don't fire GM's whose team make the playoffs....we got a small one this week though...feels good to say we should easily walk over the lambs...as for the guy who no one wants to mention..he still has a pretty good point in my opinion..regardless of how irrational he becomes in trying to defend/prove it

Ike I kinda of agree but we need to add a little to the mix. A bootleg to the open side with morgan leading the block would have give a better chance for a first down, caught them by surprise, and even if he didnt get the first he wouldve bled a few more seconds off the clock than an up the middle.

Throw in a few of those during the whole game and next thing you know the vikes would be more reluctant to stack the box with 10 yes 10 guys (I counted them on the last plays) not 8 or 9 like the hawks did.

You have to take advantage of the other teams strengths, exploit them. Yes I mean exploit their strengths. They expect you to exploit weaknesses but when you use their strengths against them thats when you really hurt a team. Make them think we are coming up the middle and do a bootleg or play action, put them on their heels.

You have to agree the hawks DEF line vs the MIN Def line is not the same. We cant play every team like they have a hawks Def line.

To prove my point look at DET against the Vikes the week before. They lost but, several times they took advantage of the vikes willingness to over commit to a certain run play, they make it look like a they called a run to the right side and the back would exploit this overconfidence and cut back against the flow for big gains.

The vikes have a brick wall on the DEF line. I agree pound into it, wear it down, grind out yards but then out of the blue when they don't expect it change it up and catch them on their heels. Use that same formation that is normally an up the gut run to trick them into a bootleg or play action pass. This will allow us to gain a yard or two more when going up the gut for a little while longer until they over commit again. Then when we lull them in again catch em on their heels again. I am not saying throw the ball more, I am saying change it up keep them guessing.

Now if the up the gut is just owning the other team and they cant stop it then yes stick with it, why change it if its working great. But in MIN it wasn't working.

SHAUN HILL STATS

....see my point?

cant blame on drop passes

he has more bad throws than any other type of throws

considering "other" are multiple types of passes....

Again Lott thank you for explanation so I didn't have to type it out.

If we don't show variations of the play either through formations or play action we are going to loose. Teams watch the film. Defense is told to use the three Rs. Read Recognize and React. Their first read will always be what do they like to do out of this formation?? "... oh here it comes. Watch for fakes and other stuff, but the first read is the primary Niner play."

I watched those tow big runs over and over last week. They were actually two separate plays, but Seattle did not play sound football and the primary F-GRADE goes to the Safety, who on both plays took bad angles. With a RB like Gore who has a sick one cut and explosion you are done.

that didnt publish well...

Type... Number
Pass Dropped ...3
Poor Throw ....9
Pass Defensed ...4
Pass Hit at Line ...3
Other ...11
Intercepted ...1

In 3 games our starting QB has 9 badly throws

WR dropped only 3 balls

you tell me whose to blame?.......yea lets blame A.Smith for those passes...

this guy has more poor throws than any other category of throws....FACT

...fits him perfectly....Shaun hill the crap-shooter

Thats my problem too. D Coordinators have now seen this play multiple times so they will game plan for it. The 9ers tried to do a little play action off of it with a dump off to Morgan in the flats but it wasn't successful. I'm guessing they've run that play approximately 15 times in 3 games with 2 play actions off of it. IMHO, it's ok to have very simple plays when you have a dominant line or dominant players. The 9ers simply don't have dominant players at this point. They need a little creativity or misdirection to help out.

BTW.. gaps are used by the defense to describe the space between o lineman. You have A, B, and C gaps on both sides of the Center. The offense uses a number to describe the hole. Typically, the left side of the Center is 1,3,5... Right side is 2,4,6...

Oneniner, if you are a true Niner fan than you should add positives to your rants. Like Hill's record and leadership and 90 passer rating.

This is what I'm talking about, when I say I'm not sure what your angle is in debate.

Honestly I see Hill growing every game. This great for us. But don't gorw too much b/c I want to draft Bradford next year. hehhe

ok oneniner... I am actually going to engage you because you are actually trying to make a coherent point, for a change.

the numbers you present are interesting... I think the question is however, is there anyone on this roster who could reasonably be expected to do better? neither I nor you are the coach... nor have we been present during the majority of practices. from what I and the majority of people on this blog believe based on what we have seen is, no. I don't think it's reasonable to believe that a. smith would or even could perform better.

now, it may be hard to swallow when we all still have images of young and montana lining up behind center. and let's be honest... hill plays pretty ugly. he doesn't throw a pretty ball. he's runs like duck with it's ass on fire. and can be generally hard to watch. and no, I do not believe he will lead you to the super bowl (however, on the right team, I think he is capable of winning one). he's a game manager, and that's not sexy... but until this offense has more playmaking ability, he's pretty much exactly what this teem needs at the qb position.

Exactly!! That game was lost on a rare play made by a seasoned vet. We could point to a lot of things that could have changed the outcome but I can honestly say that we were in position to win and a HOF QB did what he has been know to do and that is put up a prayer and have it answered in the final seconds.

It sucks to have lost. But I feel good about our team for the first time in a long time.

Oh and the chimp is throwing more excrement he thinks 52 completions is less than 9 poor throws. So hill "throws more poor passes than anything else....."

He also probably lumped throwing the ball away because of good coverage into poor throws. Wonder where he gets those supposed statistics.

Made up maybe? Or did he just rename the categories.

Oh no did I just feed the monkey?

I bought my 13 Shaun Hill jersey just to make a point and will wear it proudly as he leads this team to the playoffs this year. All the haters will continue to hate, the Niners will continue to win games and Hill is going to have the last laugh.

Hill after the game...
"I would hope that we’d move on the same way we would of if we had won the game… go out this week hungry, work our tails off, and get better. I know that’s what you’re gonna get from me. I know nothing else. Other than to keep on grinding and I know the entire locker room feels the same way."

Benny,

"All the haters will continue to hate, the Niners will continue to win games and Hill is going to have the last laugh."

Hill Jersey that's great. Well on this Blog I think there is only one Hill hater. LOL

I think he is looking better and better. Imagine if he started last year. This is what we have been wanting for two year. Let Hill start a season and see what happens. I am more than impressed at this point. As long as he keeps improving week to week.

I agree Hill has looked pretty good so far, but the ONLY thing that oneniner has said that I think does have some merit is that he isn't getting the WRs involved enough. His only WR completions are typically to Bruce on short stuff underneath. I know there are exceptions to that, but if you take away VD's production yesterday, we had very little success through the air. I think that has got to be an area of emphasis so that we can open the field up more. And who knows, having a deep threat like Brandon Jones (if he is playing well) could be enough to help get more WRs open in other areas (as well as himself down field).

OK, no joke here. Watching the game, the camera scans the spectators, the first red jersey I see? #13

Please, for the love of God, stop replying to posts made by a certain Raiders fan that moonlights as a disgruntled 49ers fan. He will grow bored and leave once nobody pays attention to him.

AWESOME!!!

I'd take Hill and his blue collar hard core work ethic over any hotshot (Cutler, Quinn, Russel, Rivers, Ect) ANYDAY!!!

He is the definition of a TEAM player =)

where can I rewatch past games this season?

I want to go over the offensive possetions to see what passes hill made that were truly bad passes compared to smart throws ie getting rid of the ball because of pressure and good coverage.

Brekkon, I use the NFL network on Cable/Fios. I basically look at the schedule and DVR the 9er and other games I want to analyze... as if I had the time at home. Obviously I do at work... hehehe.

Anyway, I was also thinking about purchasing the game rewind package for streaming online fron NFL.com.

https://gamerewind.nfl.com/nflgr/secure/registerform?icampaign=GR_regseason_TR

Has anyone used this service yet? If so, how is it???

..ok....i was actually about to say that...

i refuse to let this crap - shooter of a QB mess up my season...

I have always believed in Ray....He should be starting next yr.....since watching the NFL i have never seen a player heal that fast and play that well in a short career..

Ray McDonald, DE, San Francisco

With the Niners lining up in field-goal defense at the end of the first half at Minnesota, trailing 13-7, McDonald burst through the middle of the line, got a big paw on the Ryan Longwell kick, and knocked the ball directly to Nate Clements, who lumbered the length of the field for a shocking touchdown at the first-half gun. Instead of going into halftime trailing 16-7, the Niners had a 14-13 halftime lead. Ten-point swing.

Also impressed by Brooks....he his the real deal

Ahmad Brooks, the San Francisco linebacker in Patrick Willis' shadow, made a tremendous knockdown of Percy Harvin, sniffing out a reverse and nailing him for a loss.

of course my main man Goldshon's has been looking good the past couple games......he did a good job on the speed catching up to AP......a lil dissapointed he didnt protect the endzone on that last play

Lawson keeps getting better....

i will think of others as the week goes...

while I like Hill a lot and can agree he is a team player, I think I also would have welcomed the likes of Cutler, Quinn and Rivers. I did intentionally skip one. Reminds me when Russel was drafted and Traitor fans were bragging he could throw 70 yards on his knees. My response, the plays over when you're on your knees.

....just a note from last week.....

i did mention clements speed when someone mention he would be guarding rice.....i hope teams dont take advantage of him.....

he did make up for the td with a td of his own....

once a gain Spencer is the best CB on the field...

Exactly . . . be gone with oneniners agenda which is clearly more Pro-Alex than Pro-Niners. I understand that Shaun pales in comparison to Steve & Joe, but to throw Hill under the bus weekly . . . daily . . . hourly is bizzare.

OK I went to the game yesterday and here are the INC Hill threw Yesterday.

1st QTR
Pass to Issac Bruce INC - Coverage INC
Hill Hits as he throws for INC - Hit while Throwing
Coffee bobbles ball for INC -Dropped Pass

2nd Qtr
1. Inc to Bruce - Pass Defended
2. Pressure so INT because D Walker fell down on play and didnt even try to get up and get after the ball.
- I call this a Receiver error I am sure others and a monkey that dislikes him blame Hill (Singletary chews out Walker on sideline.
3. Ball thrown out of bounds due to coverage and pressure coming. - Throw away

3rd QTR
Intentional Grounding - Smart play trying to get rid of ball to not take sack. Unfortunately no receiver there.

4th QTR
Hail mary INC - bad throw? I dont think so... It was a needed throw....

In the Vikings game hill had ZERO bad throws.

Good play from Hill in that game.

Monkey's stats are made up I am sure....

Oneniner,
Why are you throwing Hill under the bus when it is clear that Mark Roman couldn't cover a 5th string WR when it mattered most. They would have won the game if he could have just pushed one of the guys feet out of the back of the endzone. Roman is the one to blame. When Raye asked Hill to make the plays to give the team the lead in the 4th quarter he did. As for the INT, if you watched the game you would have seen that it was actually a good decision with Delanie 1x1 vs. a small corner. The problem was that he tripped himself and couldn't make a play on the ball. That INT in my opinion was Walker's fault not Hill's. Maybe Smith would be better, but what has he ever done to deserve a starting job? Did he out perform Hill in the preseason? NO.

...because the game didnt have to be played till the last second....

your love for hill....is an insult to out defense

Our defense currently is in the top 5....top freaking 5

they should not be playing in the last second of any game

WHEN YOUR OFFENSE GOES 0 FOR 11 on 3rd downs AND YOUR QB GOES 0 for 8 ON 3rd downs

its really not that hard to figure who should be blamed

Benny I live in Chicago and I am planning to travel to the bay area for the niners/bears game on Nov 12th so i am planning to buy S Hills #13 jersey just for the fun and support of Hill. He will get better as the season goes on and the Offense comes together. GO 49ERS

FYI - I dont care about A.Smith....he his not playing, so i can care less about him..

Some on this blog cant face the facts so they keep bringing up my so called "love for A.Smith"....just to muddy the truth

I dont give a damn about A.Smith.....

All I know is my current QB sucks...thats all i care about.

who gives a f..k about A.Smith - last i recalled he didnt send me any $$$

So again all i care about is dumping this crap-shooter,....i wont mind if they could bring back huard....

Hey, we had a pretty good effort:
>We didn't hang dog when we started poorly.
>Could the Vikes have stayed in it without Adrian? We hung tough w/o Gore. Coffee learns fast, he'll get better.
>Sing was right to jump D.Walker's s___. I don't think he quit on the play, his feet got tangled with DB, but he has to protect his QB; an Off Interference is better than a pick!
>Final Off Series we needed to try more seriously for a 1st down. My wife said, "Didn't we leave too much time for Brett?"
>Final Def series I was beside myself with the lack of commitment to the pass rush.
>We fans may have to develop a chant (like 'No more sweeps!') to keep Raye off that X Mo TB Dive.
>I think the team will learn and grow from this loss.
>PS-Don't feed the chimp.

oneniner, your repeated statements are just uncouth.

You are alone in your universe inside and outside this blog with your statements regarding 0-11 on third down.

I say stick with proving he can consistently throw down field... which consequently he has not been asked to do, yet. Everything else that you are spewing is just weird.

Alex Smith vs. Shaun Hill

Smith:
63.5 QB rating career
5.8 Yards per attempt
54.4 completion %
19 TD / 31 INT / 4 Fumbles Lost
Career Record 11-20

Hill:
90.4 QB Rating career
6.9 Yards per attempt
63.9 completion %
21 TD / 10 INT / 2 Fumbles Lost
Career Record 9-4

You asked for facts so there it is in numbers.
Numbers don't lie Oneniner... your an idiot and Smith sucks
That is why everyone on this blog doesn't agree with you.

IF I DIDN"T PUT NAMES ON TOP OF THE STATS AND ASKED YOU TO PICK QB A OR QB B WHICH ONE WOULD YOU CHOOSE ONENINER????????

No excuses, BUT, how about that bogus Taunting call on Spencer? Are you kidding me?

I'm hoping they cover that call on the NFL network this week when they speak to the top ref. That was just wrong.

Thats great!!!!! 2 more TD's 21 less INT's in 18 less games

Hill will have to average over 1 INT per game over the next year to be as bad as Smith

And be fined 2 TD's + any more he gets, by the league for taking Performance De-hancing drugs.

I agree, our offense should have been on the field for the closing seconds, rather than relying on our defense. But the OC called run-run-run-punt the final two series of the game. What would you have had Hill do differently?

It was re-damn-diculous. It would've been 4th down were it not for that stupid stupid call. Even if they do address it on NFL Network, they won't admit they were wrong. They never do. I even heard the tv guys ask twice, "where's the taunt?...where's the taunt?" Just dumb. I really have a problem with those subjective penalties. And wasn't there an offensive penalty too? Why didn't they off-set? Why wasn't Jarred Allen's celebration of his forced fumble in the 1st quarter a taunt?

Sorry, kinda went off there. But I was so pissed.

In the interest of accuracy, I was slightly off in that previous post. In the penultimate series, the 49ers went run-run-pass. Run (-2 yds), Run (-5 yds), Pass (complete, 8 yds on 3rd and 17). In the final series, it was run-run-run.

Here is my perfect call for the 3rd down play. Fake the run up the middle and bootleg the QB wide side of field. The clock keeps running no matter what and with how the defense was stacked in the middle the play probably goes for 20 yards and its game over. Low risk but huge payoff. BTW if Hill gets stuck way back who cares we are punting anyway with good field position. Crummy play calling!!

In my opinion, you know who, "pukeniner," is the reason and the cause of negativity in going through the commentaries of Matt's Blog! Kind of like "pukeniner" writing 24/7 that Hill's "the reason" for EVERY negative that happens to the 49ers!
pukeniner...you suck more than even Smith does! You suck more than the loss yesterday! You suck more than finding out Gore has a bad ankle sprainou suck more than a Black Hole!
pukeniner...YOU SUCK!!!!

I guess I'm alone when I think Roman is actually decent in his current role. Don't get me wrong - I think he was very lacking as a safety and I'm very happy to see more of a playmaker like Goldson back there, but Roman has played well and contributed significantly in stopping a lot of 3rd downs on underneath crossing stuff and the like with his knowledge of where to be. I have a hard time blaming him for that kick in the stomach hail mary as well because it was just a great catch at the very back of the end zone. If he shoves him out of bounds, the receiver likely drops the ball and a flag is thrown for PA. That ride them out stuff is more for a wr who goes up in the air to catch a ball and you can catch or push them without affecting their ability to catch the ball before it arrives...I don't see that as an option with this play. He could have been in better position to jump and cause disruption but he plays decently for being a backup db.

I agree I like Roman in his current role too. I don't blame the last play on him at all. This was a good early loss for us. This cementsa the fact we will not loose to the Rams. It will bring us to Atlanta hungry as ever.

Sing mentioned we all must learn and adjust. Let us see what the next two games bring.

Way to go Hill.
Way to go V. Davis
Way to go Def
Where is Manny. I couldn't focus on him Sunday. I will need to see the game again and see what he is up too. Because in all honesty, it sure would be nice to have Orakpo on that side. Holla.

Go Niners!!!

Don't pay any more attention to oneniner, he appears to have been braindead since birth. He's possibly just another frustrated Raider fan with obviously nothing better to do than stir things up here to take out his frustrations. Most of his statements lack any credibilty at all.

I'll disagree with you about Roman though. All Roman had to do was push the receiver 4-5 inches in the air, after he caught the ball, so the receivers left foot would have come down out of bounds. There are no more forced out calls on receptions. It would have been an easy play if he hadn't panicked because the receivers foot landed right next to the line as it was. Diving for the ball was total panic when ,if he just kept his composure and used his head, the Niners would have another win and we wouldn't have to listen to the old Favre magic CRAP. Roman is just horrible in pass coverage as we all know. There's a reason no other team signed him this summer. Cut him and bring back the CB Green they cut on the final day if nobody's signed him yet.

Roman has looked good in the dime with run support. As for the winning td pass, the play was broken and everyone was scrambeling. I don't know what was going on down field b/c I haven't seen a complete end zone play. I did see Roman there in coverage and made a jumping play for the ball.

It is hard to say do you go for the pass def or the push out of bounds, which would be risky b/c if he pushed to early it is pass interferance.

I hear you about Roman, but com'on he as at least in position and jumped. Looked like decent coverage. The ball and catch were just better... from 40 yards away too. Which was insane.

Saw a few comments about checking out of plays in the comments. I was at the game and can tell you it was insanely loud. The fact that we didn't have several false starts was pretty impressive. Something that may have been lost over the TV. Having said that, I have never felt a more deafening silence as the Metrodome after we blocked that field goal and took it to the house to end the first half.
