The 49ers have certainly taken the high road in the contract impasse with receiver Michael Crabtree while holding firm to the belief that the organization is treating the No. 10 overall pick fairly.
And if the Crabtree and agent Eugene Parker believe the 49ers have acted out of line in their contract dealings with the unsigned draft pick, then team president Jed York said he would like to know about it.
After all, the 49ers did not seem to offend their six previous first-round draft picks over the past four years. The 49ers have also been proactive about signing young players - including Shawntae Spencer, Michael Robinson, Frank Gore, Delanie Walker, Parys Haralson and Joe Staley - to lucrative contract extensions.
Take this as a good sign that
The 49ers want Crabtree on the team. Whether they had him rated as the top player on their board or not, there is no denying that Crabtree was not chosen within the first nine picks of the draft.
When the NFL puts together its rookie salary pool - the cap within the cap that places some broad limits what teams can spend on its rookie class - the dollar amount is derived from where each team selects.
Each draft pick is assigned a figure based on where the selection was made. Each pick is assigned a dollar amount less than the previous slot. That, in itself, does not guarantee a slotting system that teams and players much follow, but it is certainly a guideline that has been the standard for as long as anyone can remember.
I asked when he made the offer and whether he has heard back from the Crabtree camp.
"Don't recall,"

Oh this is too much fun. Thanks MM for setting up this role play:
What will be the first words out of Jedidiah York's mouth as these two adolescents look into each other's eyes?
Here's my guess – "Michael, take the money and run."
Great stuff MM - thank you for chasing down this story. I was surprised Ralph and Tom did not probe more on this issue.
BTW - GPS game this Sunday?
If the
Although I admire Mr. York being thorough enough to meet with Mr. Crabs I seriously doubt he has the right credentials needed to sort out the cobwebs hanging in his mind. That would take a shrink.
Jed is doing the right thing here and jolly good for him. This whole thing has gotten out of hand and now senior leadership needs to lead. He is offering the face to face and in effect is putting 'skin in the game.' Parker and Crabs need to be open and engaging. Anything short of that will speak volumes. My lone advice to Jed is take one, just one, other person whom you absolutely trust with you into the meeting. The fewer people the better. Good Luck and if Crabs does not come to the table.....well time to move on.
Can Douchetree really be so.....mentally defective as to turn down Jed's offer of a sit down talk? The most astonishing thing about this whole situation is the lack of communication from Crabtree. He's just sitting there like a cow patty on prairie. If he wants more money, he should talk to the Niners. If he doesn't want to play for the Niners, he should just say so himself and be done with this jackass festival. WTF is going on in his peanut sized brain? I'm literally dumbfounded.
*sigh*......*yaaaaawwwwn*.......*zzzzzzzzzz*.....
From what I know of, Michael flew to Texas a few days ago to celebrate his 22nd birthday. Crabs will also be attending the Red Raiders home opener this Saturday, so I don't expect Crabs to be back in the bay until next week (where he'll hopefully meet with Jed face-to-face).
If we beat Seattle this Sunday, I expect Crabs to sign for sure the following Monday.
at least this could either bring closure to this or a signing...i hope. but im not holding my breath. matt thanks for the player review. i really enjoyed it. Just wondering who you sit by in the game?
There's no doubt Crabtree can make a contribution to any team he ends up on. However with the Niners still having a need at QB, OL, and pass rush (unless what we saw Sunday was a permanent miracle) it would be great if they could trade him for a #1 next year. Imagine how great it would be with the chance to get the best QB in next year's draft AND maybe one of the top tackles. I still believe the current 49er receivers are good enough, and have lots of upside, too.
It's so odd that no attempt at negotiation or even contact has been made by the Crabtree side for almost 50 days. With his whole career at stake, it just doesn't seem that they are being normally rational. I think there's some emotional problem here, that probably the 9ers would be better off without in any case.
I listened to that Jed York interview on KNBR. Not only Jed York took the high road, I thought he actually went overboard. I was cringing, thinking "No Jed, No! This buffoon is not worth it. Don't buy yourself a problem."
1. If the 49ers sign Crabtree, he will likely become an ongoing headache and a distraction for as long as he's a 49er.
2. Even after signing a deal, he's liable to demand more money as early as next year (as T.O. did in Philadelphia).
3. Then when it comes time to renew his contract, Crabtree will likely whore himself to find the team that will pay him the most money - forget about team loyalty, legacy, etc.
This is the last guy Singletary needs on his team. We could have had Michael Oher instead of this disaster, but that's bad karma. Write off Crabtree and move on.
And tune in next week to monitor the drama that is sure to come; Will Craptree realize where Parker is leading him?? Will Jed have a nervous breakdown if things don't go well?? Same Crap time Same Crap Channell!!! *music* Crapman!!
This would be a face saving way for Crabtree to move out of the corner he has backed himself into. Meet with York and say it was all just a misunderstanding and now he's ready to set the NFL on fire. Right now he is just compounding a poor decision every day he delays. I don't think he'll take advantage of this opportunity, though, because if he is thinking clearly, he wouldn't be backed in a corner.
York can't remember when he offered meeting? Seems like an important piece.
if he sees his parents for his birthday maybe they will slap some sense into this kids head. i hope his parents have the strength and integrity to set him straight and let him know the world doesnt owe him a multi million dollar lifestyle just because you can catch a ball. if he was my son i would be sickened and embarrassed by this greedy ego driven charade. happy birthday
What the hell is a GPS Game???
I think its so clear that he would prefer not to play here. He prob wants to be in dallas and has prb has been told the cowboys would trade for him. I wouldnt be surprised if that is his thinking. Neither would Jones giving up a 1st to get him.
I dont think we sign him...
Matt, do you think that by leaving Crabtree's uniform at his locker was done on purpose to get the reporters to notice it and then write it in the newspapers so it would get back to him? Or is this usually the procedure for unsigned players.
Apologies to Matt. Didn't mean to bring down the level of this board but I think it is very obvious whats going on.
This d***bag doesn't want to play for 49ers and it has nothing to do with the money. I think he has put an unrealistic demand knowing very well that no sane NFL team will sign him. So he will enter the next year's draft and will be selected by Cowboys or Redskins as pimped by another d***bag Deon.
Good move, Jed.
Just don't give away the store
Finally! Some of us have been calling for this for a while. It's call the Art of Negotiation!
If Jed needs a further hand, call in the best, Da Mayor Willie Brown. Personally I don't like his politics but there isn't a better mediator around. He also has in the past dealt with NFL issues as an attorney and has been very successful
Get it Done Jed!
Meaning of GPS Game?? Anyone?? Bueller... Bueller....
This move shows Good Faith on behalf of ownership, if Crabtree/Parker balk, game over.
I contend that all would be 'Nicey-Nicey' if he makes more then DHB. Does Jed break slot?
Jed likely wants to hear the crux of the hold up. 'Tell Me Michael,Is it money or your lack of desire to play here'?
Boudreaux_1 GPS Game is an inside reference as to Where we as a Team are in relationship to our talent/record. 'Are we better/improving', etc.
Yes, it's a GPS game anytime we play a Division Rival. Until we own the Division anyway.
How many of you think this is about money? I think it has nothing to do with money. He doesn't want to play for our beloved Niners. PERIOD.
Thanks man. If that's the case I think every game this year with the exception of both rams games qualifies as GPS....
Question: Meaning of GPS Game?? Anyone??
My response: It's my lone attempt to have an impact on sports lexicon. I coined it a couple years ago. It's a game that shows exactly where a team is. In this case, it shows precisely where the 49ers rank either within their division, the NFC or the NFL. I expect the term "GPS game" it to show up on Wikipedia soon with a link to the first time I used it in 2007.

I'm certainly not privy to the inner workings of the negotiations of this kind of contract. It seems odd (from an outsiders prospective atleast) that there has been no response to Mr York's overture for a week-not only odd but simply rude. Whether or not the intention is to sign a contract a simple response would seem "appropriate".Onward I say -the train is starting to move either get on or stay in back at the whistle stop !
I see this as the last olive branch by the employer side. Don't bite the hand that's supposed to feed you, rook.

Question: Matt, do you think that by leaving Crabtree's uniform at his locker was done on purpose to get the reporters to notice it and then write it in the newspapers so it would get back to him?
My response: Interesting question. I was told that they have his locker ready, so when he signs there will be no wasted time. But it almost seems like a distraction in the locker room -- a reminder that somebody in the room will be losing a high-paying job when the guy signs. I doubt if any of the six receivers on the 53-man roster is all that eager to have Crabtree join the team. --Matt M.
Cleveland Mike - Who do you recommend Jed take with him . . . Tom Hagen?
Maybe Jed should take Luca Brasi with him to the meeting.
If Crabtree was to sit out the entire season and actually reenter the draft next season, would anyone even consider paying him more than the 49ers are now offering?
No, unless he has already an agreement in place. I think whe wants to play for Cowboys and probbaly will take less initially.
I can't believe the Yorks and the Niner organization are going to suck up to Craptree. Let the diva go and tell him not to let the door hit him on his ass on the way out. Signing Craptree will be a huge mistake! This punk is going to cause headache after headache. He has proven what his character is like....and it sucks!!
No, it is all about money and his diva ego thinking he should have been number 1.
Crabtree is toxic. He and his little drama squad are no longer wanted by this fan.Brandon Jones will contribute lots more this year than MC could. We should have taken Percy Harvin.
As I believed all along,Jed is doing everything possible to get the deal done. If the Agent won't return the call then it's time for Crabs to stop trusting the sleezy agent and fire his butt and get a decent agent that will represent the players interests and not his own.
Since we have no evidence that Crabtree is a diva or even that he has been personally involved in any part of these negotiations,we certainly can't make any final judgements on the kids character just yet. It looks bad but this agent has made several of his clients look bad in this way in the past . The kid has shown good character throughout his career and has never shown "diva" traits or been a bad team mate or a bad citizen (until he met this agent, who DOES have a reputation for such sleezy business practices.
I hope the kid fires the agent and plays at a high level for us for a decade or more, and continues his past of being a good citizen on and off the field.
Until then, like sing says, there are 53 guys who are signed and willing to play that are our concern. GO NINERS !
This whole scenario, request to meet, furnished/stocked locker, makes the point that the Team is committed to negotiating fairly.
Ask the question face to face.
Do you want to be here?
I see no one offering a Draft pick for a guy they can get for nothing. Our only recourse is to have more then one interested party willing to outbid the other. Snyder vs. Jones?
Marc: The other teams can NOT get Crabs for nothing. If he were to re-enter the draft next year it would cost the team that drafts him the pick they use to draft him (might as well give that pick to us and guarantee you get him). But there is no guarantee that he will be there when any team picks(except the 1st overall pick). The only way to guarantee you get crabtre would be to trade with the Niners before the draft and work it so that Crabs agent knows the $ amount the other team is willing to give crabs.
Top_Cat I refer to cost as our price to someone for Trade purposes.
I would hate to lose a year, and the pick, for nothing. Our best scenario, if he opts not to play here, is get the best deal when can and NOT let him reenter free of charge, so to speak.
Matt, whats your take on Jason Hill?
He was not even active last week, how come he is in the doghouse?
He seems to catch everything thrown his way....and made some nice plays for us last year. It seems like if/when Crabtree signs, J. Hill will be cut, and that is BS
Good on Jed...he's handling this exactly how he should. Other NFL owners...are you watching/listening? Fans...we're not going to lose in this scenario. If Crabtree decides to sit out the year, fine. In March, we have 7 weeks to trade him...there will be suitors, trust me. Ideally, a 1st rd pick would be in order...however, the reality is, if Mac can get a 2nd rounder, that'd be a good deal. Crabtree's value will decrease, but some owner out there will take his shot. In the meantime, he uses the money he would've spent on Crabtree to extend some other contracts.
Matt, question for you -
We are able to simply take the best offer from an interested suitor for his 'Rights'? No, sign then Trade, applies after March 1?
No contingincies? Here's Michael, good luck, thanks for the Pick?
Or, does he have to accept a deal before the transaction is completed?
Be sweet to have the 'Ol Brady Bunch "Cavity Erruptor Rule" apply.(Caveat Emptor of course).
Hi Matt, Jed is leaving no stone unturned but the bottom line may be that Crabtree does not want to play with the 49ers. Jed should have Mike Williams at the meeting and throw in baseball whiz kid Matt Harrington who turned down millions and now works at Home Depot for $11.50 an hour. I think Parker sees himself as some kind of visionary that will liberate the poor million dollar players from their bondage. As for Prime-Time I can't dislike the guy because he was so great in that Super Bowl year.
MM your comments about the rookie salary cap are rather irrelevant in this discussion because it only applies to the first year salary of the player. Says nothing about the amount of guaranteed money which is the main difference between the two parties. First year salary maybe 300 thousand. Guaranteed money: 16 to 20 million.
TC, no it does not say that Jed has been pushing this deal all along. It says exactly the opposite. It says Jed's not called or talked to Parker for a long, long time.
I am a tad cynical when it comes to young Jed so when he says he can't remember when he made the offer to meet with Parker, I'm thinking he hasn't done it yet. Sounds like he improvised on KNBR and was on his way to make it true. Wouldn't be the first time that has happened.
I also don't like it being announced by Jed on the radio. Parker has kept the negotiations out of the newspapers and the 49ers have proudly announced that they do too. Jed just changed that. Bad idea.
Anyhow, I hope they meet real soon and I hope both sides come to the table willing to do some real negotiating rather than the posturing that MM & his peers have been advocating. I wish young Jed would take Eddie D along with him to show him how it's done.
Or me.
I hear the Jed York interview on the way home from work. I have to say Jed has grown into the job. The deer in the headlights quality we saw when he first took over has pretty much disappeared. Jed came across as an articulate and confident person who won't be intimidated by the Jerry Joneses of the NFL world.
He does have a bit his Uncle Eddie in him after all.
HAHAHAHAHA Realfan going with Jed to negotiate with crabs and parker!!!!!!
OMG it took me five minutes before I stopped laughing hard enough to be able to type!!!!!!!!!
BTW Jed isnt the regular guy trying to talk with Parker and crabs about contract specifics. He has people he pays to do that.
What I gather from what he said is that if his guys "acted out of line in their contract dealings" then he is willing to sit down and talk with Parker and Crabs to hear how his guys are acting out of line. It sounds like he wants to find out from their side what is keeping things from proceeding.
He is basically calling them out on the things that they are leaking to make it sound like the 49ers are not acting professionally in these negotiations.
Matt, I truly believe there is more to this whole story than what we know! Mr. Crabtree is only twenty two years old and he is definitely influenced by specific individuals (Parker, Deion or Cowboys owner!!!). I have a hard time buying the idea that Crabtree has a large ego and that is the only reason he is not accepting 49ers offer.
Even Park is smart enough not to create negative publicity for himself in the future. It is very much possible that another team (high ranking individual) has influenced Crabtree’s decision by assuring him a safety net if he does not sign with 49ers this year and re-enters the draft next year. We are talking about millions of dollars so Crabtree is not going to just jeopardize his future.
T
his whole situation is very unusual because of the comments that were made by a NFL employee (Deion) and it will impact NFL as a whole. What are your thoughts? How could NFL and the ownership not question tampering? If a team offers Crabtree a large contract next year, do you think NFL will investigate!!!
It seems like the inactive Jason Hill would be the odd man out.
For my money I'd rather they release Rossum and give the return duties to Spurlock or eventually Sheets.
Do you think there is any chance of this happening if/when Crabtree signs?
As for Prime-Time I can't dislike the guy because he was so great in that Super Bowl year.
I can. He's a weenie.
Hey Matt...
We are heading to San Fran on friday (consilation since our last week trip to Disney -LOL with the wife).. Hopeully i can head to headquarters on Friday to catch Crabs heading into the building. Maybe i'll get to meet ya..
I hope it happens soon.
Brandon C-Treihart
Realfan49- I hope Jed asks you to come along as well. Oh, and bring your checkbook, too. Put your own money where your mouth is. Be sure to give him whatever he wants. Thats the way negotiations should work, right?
Realfan is now the Contracts person for the 49ers Our team roster is pretty easy now
New Crabtree Contract
Michael Crabtree 2009 Salary $127,000,000 minus all dead money from cutting everyone else
Michael Crabtree 2010 If uncapped he gets all of the yorks money and assets, if capped he gets $127mm + Cap increase minus all still lingering dead money
2010 Roster:
Michael Crabtree.......Crickets begin chirping
Living in Dallas I can attest that there's no bigger sleazeball than Jerry Jones and his minions Deion Sanders and Michael Irvin. Some sort of under-the-table hanky panky would not be beyond this trio with the agent in tow. I don't know about Crabtree as a person but these idiots are leading him down the wrong path. And why? Because they have set themselves up as NFL experts and anyone that disagrees is an idiot. Crabtree probably just sees dollars and 2 players he idolizes and is going along. Like Deion said, "why take $20 million when you can get $40 million." Does he know something we don't?? Bet he does!!
It would certainly seem that Dallas would be the big suitor for Crabtree (if there even is one). It also seems apparent that Dallas would be picking later than 10th in next year's draft and I doubt too many other teams drafting ahead of them would be interested in wasting a pick on him-even if the Cowboys did take him in the first round in 2009, Jerry Jones isn't gonna pay this guy $40 million.
If Jones IS that crazy for him, then I would expect the Niners to be able to get something in return for his rights next March because Jones may not take the chance of letting his prized Crabtree get re-drafted by another team.
Unrealfan49, get out of the 80's, they're long gone. As for Parker keeping negotiations out of the newspaper, what negotiations(this is what we want period, pay it or we're waiting til next year's draft)? We're going to penalize the team that actually drafted Michael because we're mad at the first 9 teams who didn't draft him. Question Mr. Parker: how much lower would he have dropped if the Niners had passed on him? He could have ended up in the 20s. Also , I guess Parker didn't tell Deion to keep his big mouth shut about these "on going negotiations" and apparently you don't think the "two teams" comment wasn't a public negotiations ploy. I guess the facts don't matter if they get in the way of what you want. Let me guess, you're a graduate of the Ralph Barbieri school of Don't Let Reality Interfere With Your Wants.
P.S. Don't blame the Yorks for not being Eddie D when it was your own Eddie D who caused the ownership change. Be thankful the Yorks didn't sell the team and that the team is still here.
Matt,
Thanks for the update on Douchetree. I think Jed is playing this thing perfectly!
Guys listen if Douchetree's camp refuses to meet with Jed who is wanting to meet face to face in order to negotiate in good faith than what does that say about their camp? If they refuse to meet with Jed then I believe it will be a DIASTEROUS PR perception for ANY team to draft him next year except for maybe Jerry "Lunatic" Jones of course. Still though even if the Douche signs with the Cowboys he will be a late round pick in the 1st round depending on how the Cowboys do this year thus getting offered alot less money. Seems insane to me but this is what it is. 49er Empire your thoughts on my take?
No other reason but TAMPERING GO ON HERE!!!.
This makes no sense. Parker is an experienced Agent and has people like Deion in his "camp" (not to say that Crrabtree can't implode on his own).
The only thing that makes sense is a backstage deal going on with another team. I am afraid that the Niners will be held hostage to that Team and get very little for Crabtree in the end (if there is a trade before the 2010 draft). If the 49ers do not do anything before the 2010 draft all they get is a compensatory pick.
49ers better shop Crabtree around soon so they can be prepared to have teams bid against each other in March.
Yours Truly:
Conspiracy Theorist
Hey ska.....not so sure about Luca but I have learned over the years that the real deals get done with fewer people at the table. Maybe Jed and Scotty Mc...period.
He should have lots of notes and have his $$$ lined up on his note sheets. Three weeks ago we cut a $60 million (annual) deal . Contract was for 5 years or $300 million. Now maybe Deion could have gotten $400 million and that we will never know but there were only 5 of us at the table. Took 2 hours as opposed to the past 4 years of blah, blah, blah. As Patrick Swaz would say (from the pic Road House).....Be nice, smile or else take it otside. So we were nice, smiled and listened before we talked. If Crabs does not want to be here then pack up and call it a day but be nice. Hey I will be at this Sunday's game with the Hawks....been 10 years since I was at The Stick...do the hot dogs still suck? Pass the mustard.
Matt why does everyone make it seem like Crabtree can go back into the draft? If I'm the 49ers and can't sign him by the Nov 17th deadline (i believe that's the deadline) the first thing i would do when I'm allowed to is trade him for picks. He wouldn't get a chance to get drafted.
...you guys are a bunch of whinners...
...what if crabtree seats out the season....get drafted by another team...get paid less and he his ok with it.......
...he would then say ..he never really wanted to play for the niners...
...bottom line we lose....
Looks as if Jason Hill will be the one losing the high paying job if Crabtree signs. Seems like the niners are not giving him much opportunity. He did not suit up and did not seem very happy during the preseason. Only really seeing action when Davis was QB. He has shown he can make plays. Niners should give him a chance.
"Don't blame the Yorks for not being Eddie D when it was your own Eddie D who caused the ownership change. Be thankful the Yorks didn't sell the team and that the team is still here."
Egg-zactly! I love Eddie D, but you summed up the past 7 losing seasons in those two sentances.
I've got a couple of questions. If he were to sign today, would Crabtree be able to contribute this year? He doesn't know he playbook, and he didn't play for a semi-pro team like USC. Second, could the 9ers do a sign and trade? Rumors on the web are that Jerry Jones is behind the hold out.
Adam Schefter just twitted this 5mins ago. I think this was York's goal :to make sure the public and media was aware the 49ers are trying to keep open communication with no response. Maybe this bad press for Crabtree will get his eyes to open a bit.
Now its been reporteed by our own Matt M.
Matt B., NFL network, ESPN, Sirius, and Adam Schefter. Great job in my opinion by York. He's in my opinion done everything right since taking over.
Seems like just another PR move to keep fans thinking the niners are doing everything reasonable.
The niners are winning this PR war by a landslide. Of course, it helps that Crabtree's position is silly, and the only mouthpiece for his side is Deion Sanders.
I'm sure Parker would love to be able to leak contract differences, but cant because his client's position is so ludicrous.
You are a welcher-please honor the bet you made and leave this blog for the year
Two things, assuming the Cowboys are behind Deion's "Why take 20 million when you can get 40" statement, they'd HAVE to trade for Crabtree, right? There's no way they can pick him up in the draft and pay him that much money. It would immediately break the slotting rule and they'd be the ire of the entire NFL (if they're not already). That would at least be helpful from the Niners standpoint.
Second thing, did anybody watch NFL Network highlights a couple days ago? I didn't, but a friend told me during the Niner highlights every time it was described Shaun Hill threw to a receiver, Deion inevitably shouted out "Michael Crabtree,' each time. I'm damn glad I didn't see it. I loved Deion in 94 and have great memories of the guy, but he's destroying them immensely.
> Matt why does everyone make it seem like Crabtree can go back into the draft?
Because he can if he wants to.
> If I'm the 49ers and can't sign him by the Nov 17th deadline (i believe that's the deadline) the first thing i would do when I'm allowed to is trade him for picks.
Then the "traded goods" refuse to sign with their new team and reenter the draft. It's as simple as that.
I think if Crabtree signed today, he'd be inactive until at least the bye week.
Later in the year, I think they would have maybe 1 sub package with a limited number of routes and plays that they would bring him in for, and so at most you're talking about him seeing 10 snaps per game by the end of the year.
If he signs in November (at the deadline for players to sign if they want to play this year), he probably wouldnt see action until week 16/17 if at all.
This is part of his negotiating problem. After he blew off training camp, the niners lost all incentive to try to get a deal done quickly. He can no longer help this year, so now signing him in September isnt all that different from signing him in March.
Crabtree is the one missing cheques, and hurting reputation.
Matt, could you check into something for me?
Its been previously noted that Crabtree isnt hurting for cash because of endorsement money. What I'm wondering is if any/many of those companies have a mechanism to back out of their deals/pay less because he's not a current NFL player? they can't be too happy with his holdout or feeling they have their money's worth ....
Bottom line is Jed did the right thing here. he took the pressure Crab and his agent were drawing up for us and turned it right around back on them. All the things that have been said on their side, lies or truth is bein called on. by Jed doing this he has put the spot light on Crab and Parker to speak up on what they think is unfair. imagine how it will look if Crab and Parker just ignore Jeds offer to meet. it will just do more damage to Crabs Rep. then anything! im very pleased with the way the Niners are handling this and even more impressed by Jed. Even if Crab wins the war by not signing. I strongly feel that we won the Battle and that will help in future drafts showing that we will NOT be bullied.
If Crab doesn't want to play for us then he needs to be a man and admit it. Eli might have caught a lot of flack by not wanting to be a charger. but at least his party were men enough to admit it. This meeting is the chance to find out exactly whats going on. if he dont wanna be here then he should say so. part ways and be done with it. if it really is about the money. then he talk some sense into him before he destroys his career. he will thank us for it later. If he doesn't bother to even pay attention to Jeds offer, then it just shows how much of a punk Diva he really is. Again, The pressure is REALLY on Crabs now. Especially how fast Jeds offer made national news.
He will not SIGN. This isn't about money. He has an agreement in place to play for Dallas 2010.
Realfan said...TC, no it does not say that Jed has been pushing this deal all along. It says exactly the opposite. It says Jed's not called or talked to Parker for a long, long time.
-----------------------------------------------
Your not paying attention again.
Jed said several weeks ago that Paraag is in constant contact with Parker. So it is obvious that Jed has been on top of this from the beginning. You don't really believe that Paraag is on the phone to Parker all the time ,as Jed stated, and that Jed isn't kept up to the minute on what transpires between Paraag and Parker,do you ? Come on man,get real.
I understand that you are almost totally on Crabtree's side in this mess, and I somewhat agree with you on some of these issues, like the fact that we don't know if Crabtree is just listening to Parker blindly (as Crabs college HC says is probably the case) or if Crabs or someone in his Family are the ones pulling Parker's strings (imho it is probably about 75-85 % parkers fault, since he has the bad reputation and Crabs has never been abything but a good citizen UNTIL he met Parker). But as long as Parker is representing the kid,Jed or Scotty and Paraag can only deal with Parker and not the kid directly. They are doing what they can,and pretty well as far as WE know. The Niner seem blameless in this . Jed is not a stupid guy and of course he is doing whatever he can, within reason,to get the kid into the 53. YOU KNOW THAT ! I am very happy with the way my owner and GM etc are handling this,as are almopst all Niners fans(if you read the polls). I am very dissatisfied with the way Parker is representing the naive kid. I hope Crabs and his family start to see it my way soon and fire Parker and get someone who will represent him properly.
Once again, thanks for the insults. Much appreciated.
I would point out a couple of things.
1. Reporters that posted details of the Niners offer are based in Bay area and are beat writers for the team. So any leaking has been done by the Niners. Not the first time. I remember Nolan's firing was leaked before it happened. Scott M said he knew who did the leaking but couldn't do anything about it. Sounds like Jed.
2. Deon clearly stated he was not a Crabtree adviser and was not a party to the negotiations. Not sure I believe him but if you chose to believe about these other two teams making offers..
I owe Brekkon a response on the other Crabtree thread. I'll go do that now.
Well, if thats true its collosal tampering and if we ever proved it we'd own a bundle of Dallas picks.
Of course, it isnt true. If Crabtree were trying to force his way to Dallas he could have achieved it much quicker and more effectively on draft day.
Moreover, he doesnt get the choice where he goes next year, either.
oneniner is a welcher? That sucks. Can't say I'm surprised though. The guy doesn't seem to have a lot of integrity. What a joke accusing Maiocco of not being objective when his Hill bashing and sour grapes over Alex Smith have become shtick. Is there any doubt that he'd prefer the Niners to lose as long as Hill is starting and gets blamed for the loss? Is this guy even a 49ers for or just an Alex fan? $5 says he'd rather kiss Alex Smith on the lips than watch Shaun Hill win a passing title.
Here's a guarantee: if oneniner honors the bet and disappears for the year, it will only be the screen name that is on hiatus. He'll still be here under a different name dropping the same predictable BS.
I love this reduced offer to crabs. we CANNOT fold, especially because we have TWO first rounders we need to pay for next season. whats his 40 by the way? nobody knows. thats right, hes never done anything for us. Cant Coach Crabs. Cant play with crabs... but we CAN win without crabs, as we proved sunday.
And Gilroy Al , that was a brilliant post !!!
We need to understand that some fans are delusional and think the real NFL is something like Fantasy football or video games, etc.
I guess in the mind of some fans, they think that Owners in the real World, like Jed,can just do whatever they want,as if it were a fantast football league or something ? I think Jed has gone about as far as any owner could go. He has even let it be known that he has always been willing to go as high in his offer as $1 under the Raji contract,(millions more than what the #10 spot requires )and even add in incentives etc. Very, very generous and more than fair.
This is not fantasy football etc,so we just need to let the team conduct their business(as they seem to be doing very well these days, with Jed and Scotty etc !!!) and as fans cheer for the 53 that ARE on the field.
I do agree with Realfan, that I hope Crabs signs and is a good and respected player and team mate for the Niners ,a good kid and good citizen as he has always been (before he met Parker).
I totally agree with louie. he said it all. we dont need another wide receiver. I believe the corps that we have a that position are good receivers. they just need to get more plays. I agree with MAtt too that that empty locker will be a distraction. that should be taken out so that the players will not lose focus. WE DON'T NEED CASHTREE!
Be thankful the Yorks didn't sell the team??
First time I've ever heard that. Most folks have been begging them to sell.
....since i have been reading MM - i havnt see him make so much mistake on a read till now...
...i think he made like 3 corrections on this read.....
..i meant the last read...
...realfan49 got a point...if this was the cowboys they would have overpaid for him....
...so dont just blame crab...you have to blame the org too....
Sactobob: When Dilfer worked out with Crabs in the Bay Area a few weeks ago ,he said that Crabs was in great shape and was up to date on all the different things he needs to know to run professional routes in the NFL. Dilfer was impressed at how he was so advanced without having camp and without having been in an nfl type offense. And according to dilfer,he ran great routes and was in top shape and in 2 days never let a ball get to his chest but caught everything in his great hands !
As far as all the comments on Jed not recalling when he made the offer, I think it is fairly obvious why he said that. The article stated the offer was made last week, and Crabtree has yet to respond. Jed knew if he said that, it would make Crabtree look even worse, and Parker could twist it to try to say York is trying to make Crabtree look bad. I think Jed played it perfectly by saying he couldn't recall when he made the offer.
I think Jed should take Tom Cable with him to the face-to-face meeting. So Cable can sucker punch Craptree and end this thing once and for all.
Jed definitely has more of his uncle in him than his dad. This is a pretty shrewd move for a twenty-something guy. This is more about putting pressure and the spot light right on the Crabtree camp than anything else. Nicely done Mr. York!
I would have to think the 9ers should be saying what if they never picked him, where would he land? The 9ers couldve got Knowshon Moreno or Larry English. It seems the only other team that would pick Crabtree is the Eagles when they had the 19th overall and picked Jeremy Maclin. So basically you can say hes lucky to get what hes getting instead of looking at what the Raiders paid Heyward Bey at the 7th overall pick. Its like on your 1st day of work your asking for a raise. Even if they do sign him now he probably still wouldnt be ready until next year or the playoffs. Honestly i dont think any team would pay that kind of money for him anymore because he would probably be not as effective this year and wouldnt be worth 2 draft picks for next year. The truth his hes losing his credibility and making it more obvious he might be a bust like Jamarcus Russel and wont give a crap once that money is in his hands.
Anyways good job by Coach Sing on the NBA timout and Justin Smith with the walk off sack. The offense really needs to work on the run game and Hill needs to work on throwing downfield in a tight spot or away from triple coverage.

Matt:
if there is no compensatory pick for Crabtree, the only positive from this whole scenario for the Niners is money saved. the negatives are: wasted #10 pick (could have had Percy Harvin), public humiliation for the niner front office(if Crabtree indeed gets more money next year and becomes a star).
Wow, what a fiasco for Jed and Scott.
What do you think it went wrong for the 49ers? obviously too much confidence or too little research. there is a reason why 9 teams passed on this guy.
...And Realfan, you now must be totally humiliated because OneNiner is agreeing with you. If ever there was anything that should shock you back to reality and let you know that you are probably on the wrong side of this issue,it should be that someone of his ilk is the only one on your side.
Welcher:you are not a man of honor-I will not bet you again.
WorkingFOOL: The reason 9 teams passed on the kid is because Al Davcis is senile and because the kid had a broken foot and couldn't work out at the combine and because some of those teams were set with stars at WR already and because Parker did a very poor job of promoting his client before the draft, when the kid was getting all the phoney bad PR from Mangini and the bad pr because of his foot.
It's tough for me to lay blame for this at the feet of the Niner organization for not pretending they're the Yankees and over-paying for an unproven college sophomore. If the kid's pride was hurt by being the 2nd WR drafted I can understand that. I get it. But it's not something for which the Niners should feel obligated to add compensation. Typically when great players feel slighted they have a burning desire to prove everybody wrong. Crabtree took his marbles and went home.
Am I the only person who finds Ralph Barbieri extremely annoying? He spends all his time ripping owners and then has them on his show to tall them what a great job they are doing. He constantly says what a bad job the 49ers owners do with running the team and then in the interview with Jed he says that out of all the people at the 49ers that Jed is the best at his chosen profession. What did he even mean by chosen profession? Was Barbieri implying that Jed chose to be born to super rich parents who were given a NFL but so totally screwed up running it that they had to turn it over to their under qualified son so the fans wouldn't revolt. That's not a chose profession that winning the lottery.
I for one don't want Crabtree to sign with the 9ers. My gut tells me he will be nothing but a cancer on the team.
From what I'm reading Crabtree is off to Texas to celebrate his birthday then attend a College football game were Texas Tech fans can tell him how great he is. What do you guys think? Does this sound like a guy who puts team first or more like a guy who has no intention of signing for any team not willing to feature him while paying him a mint?
Don't know how good a coach he is, but Eric Mangini sure called it right on this guy!
No,everyone thinks Barbieri is a weasel, not just you.
But Jed did choose the profession he is in. He went to Notre Dame and took the specific courses to get him ready to take over the team. Then he worked for a law firm to get the exact experience he would need to run a team and learn about the in's and out's of building stadia, etc. Then he went to work for the team and worked as a hired worker in the trainers room and the locker room and the mail room etc etc ,every area of the team, from bottom to top,so he would actually know what he was doing. And then, when he was ready for his chosen profession,he became the Owner/President of your SF 49ers !
Fate chose him, yes, but he and his family chose to get him completely ready to meet that fate. And all the 49ers fans are glad it worked out this way ,instead of his Father still being here !
Matt, I have an interesting article idea.
I’m not sure if one has already been written, I don’t feel like digging through archives on any site, even Google. Just let me rant for a sec.
I would like to read about any underlying, inner circle, NFL conspiracies going here? I wonder if this situation is being used as a ploy to break the slotting system paradigm. I just picked up the new Dan Brown novel maybe that affected my thought process. At least it is more interesting then the ‘same-ole, same-ole’ about Crabtree.
Perhaps there are 4 sides here:
Status quo with slotting system – kind of works but salaries are TOO high, pay our vets damnit.
Status quo with NO slotting system – Crabtree is attempting this, I hope he doesn’t succeed
Rookie salary cap system – I mean why not? Who is going to complain, a full scholarship kid out of college?
Other??? – Open for more progressive solutions
I totally agree that Jed is winning the PR war by a landslide. Problem is that doesn't translate to wins on the field. In this case, winning PR is hurting the team.
You may be right BUT you have absolutly no evidence for anything you stated as fact in that last post of yours. (except your gut feeling, which is as good as anyone elses.).
Be polite. Doesn't cost you anything.
Realfan: Can you explain the factual basis behind the assertion you made over two weeks ago that having Michael Crabtree on the field would have been the deciding factor in winning at least two games this year that the Niners are now destined to lose because of his not playing?
Sorry realfan,I thought I was about the only one on this blog who WAS being polite to you ! I actually read your opinions on this Crabtree fiasco and actually agree with some of your sentiments.
Too bad you can't look at this issue from both sides like I do! You seem locked into one opinion, with little or no real EVIDENCE to back you up,just your feelings.I also could say the same thing about the other side, who are childishly calling Crabs silly names and blaming the whole thing on him, because of their hurt feelings.
My advice to all is to just let the team do the teams business and be a fan of the 53 guys who are signed. After all,we don't really know what the details are in this case. It looks like the team is trying to be very fair and it looks like the Agent is not representing his client very well and it looks like the kid is either not too bright or has no head for business at all and is just letting the expert hash it out for him(as his HC said) or is as sleezy as we know his agent is.
Maybe one day, maybe even soon,we will know some real facts about who to blame. But why play the blame game when there is a football game on sunday and we can do what fans are supposed to do,cheer for our team (which Crabs is not a part of YET).
...And the pr win by Jed is certainly not hurting the team as you claim. It might not be helping m,uch but it can't possibly be hurting.
I would bet that if you knew everything that Jed knew, you would probably be in agreement with all the actions or inactions he is taking in this matter. He is not a fool and obviously he wants this to work out well for his team ,just as you do. Why do you always seem to act as if the team owner is against you and against his own team and his own best interests ? Very strange way of thinking.
Because, Realfan and oneniner, are a glass half empty personality and have no real solutions for the 9ers, only complaints. I sure they love the team but they are the Monday morning QBs, the guys that complain about every error pass and the guys who no matter what positive item you put in front of them, will always focus on the negative and act as though fire is shooting from the sky and the four horsemen are coming.
With that said, just keep debating the facts and opinions to an extent and everyone will be just fine.
Oh and as of today 2:15pm EST:
- Alex Smith is still a bust
- we don't need Crabtree (there will be more WR's every year)
- the Yorks are handling the situation fine,
- the young 9ers lead be Sing are on a new path to greatness.
Does Realfan and oneniner what to get on board or not???
That crack about oneniner was rude to both him and me. Unworthy.
Actually I do look at both sides. I would really like them to get together and work out a deal where both sides compromise and figure something out that will work. My biggest beef is that they are not actively talking. According to the Niners, they made an offer at the end of July and told Parker to take it or leave it. That is so effing stoopid it makes steam come out my ears.
On the other side, I've not heard that Parker has flown to the bay area and banged on Jed's door demanding they sit down at a table to thrash it out.
All I hear is overinflated ego's and chest thumping. All I see is a Niner team without their #1 pick on the field who could very well be the difference between them making the playoffs this year (or next) or not. A great WR is so important to any team and especially ours.
The reason why I criticize the Niners so much is that hardly anybody else does. It takes two sides to have a fight, not one. So blaming Crabtree for everything while Mr Billionaire team owner wears his thousand dollar suits and sits on his manicured hands pisses me off. And I really dislike the bay area press totally siding with the owners. Why on earth can't any of them write the story from the players perspective instead of showing continual bias. Wimps the lot of them.
I'm a real fan of the team. I want to see them field the strongest team and make the playoffs. Eddie wasn't stingy with money and we got 5 rings to show for it. The rest of the league hated his guts. So what.
I 100% guarantee that if Paul Allen or Jerry Jones or Eddie D or Larry Ellison owned the Niners, Crabtree would have been playing last Sunday. And Gore would have got more than 30 yards rushing.
Am I the only person who finds Ralph Barbieri extremely annoying?
No. I stopped listening to this boob back in '93 when he said the Warriors should do everything possible under the sun to draft Shawn Bradley. I knew then that he was an idiot, and have not needed any further evidence.
It might be a strange way of thinking in your mind but go read this blog a year ago. 100% of the comments were critical of team ownership. It was commonly asked whether the league could force the Yorks to sell.
> It might be a strange way of thinking in your mind but go read this blog a year ago. 100% of the comments were critical of team ownership. It was commonly asked whether the league could force the Yorks to sell.
Not 100 % but the majority. Mainly because ownership did not fire Nolan. That changed, the owners did do something right. And they are doing something else right these days. So fans changed and are changing their opinion regarding the owners.
I apoligize to you Realfan if you thought I was rude to you. I meant to be rude to OneNiner though, lol.
And if you think you are looking at things from both sides(in this issue),then if I ever get into trouble,I hope you are not on my jury.
But all we have to offer on this blog is our opinions and questions . You are as entitled to yours as much as anyone. Just stay off my jury, please !
Nope, definitely not alone on that one. I do listen to the show b/c he has his good moments, and Tom Tolbert definitely makes the show miles better. However Ralph gives no slack to Singletary, and harps on every little insignificant issue with the 49ers (e.g. time management and Paraag). A year ago, and 3 years before that, he didn't have a the same attitude towards Nolan.
...And Jed was not the owner in the past,so it is a whole new ballgame now.It is almost as if they sold the team back to Eddie.
>>Am I the only person who finds Ralph Barbieri extremely annoying
No, Ralph is a self centered egoistical maniac. Every interview he does is about his opinion. He treated 49ers GM very badly last year. Also his rant against Parag is getting old. I wish this punk moves to another loud mouth market like New York or Boston. Then we don't have to listen to his East coast pizza crap as well (and I like Amici’s)

.....I dont see why most of you dont blame the org for this..
Before the draft almost all the teams knew who they wanted to draft....If the niners had crabtree on their list they should have known there would be an issue with his contract...
the raiders not picking him should have been a red flag...
and to make another point i think realfan is making
IT IS A FACT CRABTREE MAKES US BETTER - THE ORG KNEW THIS - THAT WAS WHY HE WAS DRAFTED - UNDISPUTED FACT
THEY ALSO KNEW THERE WERE ISSUES WITH HIM - (THE WHOLE WORLD KNEW ABOUT HIS ISSUES EVEN THOUGH YOU CANT DEPEND ON RUMORS)
bottomline the ORG was trying to force crabtree into a contract they knew he was going to reject....
I say pay him what he wants because if we dont we LOSE........this team needs him more than we are made to believe...
If he sucks - CUT him.....its that simple.
Tell us if you'd still be rooting for the LA Niners. There's a meaning to the old saying about be careful of what you ask for because you just might get it. Other than the Young, Jones and Lott group, we could have gotten another Chris Cohan (Warriors) for an owner. Boy, you'd really have had something to whine about and make you long for the Eddie D days.
sorry for the dupliacte posts as the site was having problems.
..if i had a dollar everytime i have been insulted by kids on this site.....I would sign Crabtree myself
....pay no mind to Joe Wilson's cousins...
Realfan there is a problem with your logic.
You are basing it all on hearsay.
Because our 1 pick isnt in camp and all we are hearing is rumors that may or may not have merit. But you proceed as if all you hear is true and where there is no proof or no rumor you make it up.
You say they are not actively talking. Who Parker or the 49ers? Do you have proof that both or 1 specific party is refusing to talk?
The only reports have said that the 49ers are in constant contact with Parker. That may not mean he is talking back but they say they are talking. SO how do you come up with 49ers are not actively talking?
Where is this proof that the 49ers said they offered a contract at the end of July and said take it or leave it? This is also made up fiction.
I think this statement of yours sums up your grievence:
"So blaming Crabtree for everything while Mr Billionaire team owner wears his thousand dollar suits and sits on his manicured hands pisses me off"
Your issue is all about being pissed the Yorks are rich and wont throw money around as YOU see fit.
Just because the Yorks are rich doesnt mean they are to blame for any of this. That's not a valid argument. Solely having a lot of money does not make one guilty of being in the wrong here.
So all this boils down to "The Yorks are rich so I want to see them fork more out just to get this guy." Sounds like bitterness against rich people to me.
Side note: For those that wonder when Crabs would have been taken if 49ers didnt take him..... Redskins They would've taken him. No doubt in my mind. You should hear what they are saying out here about their beloved skins and how they have no receivers.
..if i had a dollar everytime i have been insulted by kids on this site.....I would sign Crabtree myself
....pay no mind to Joe Wilson's cousins...

Joe Wilson,an American hero !!! Not only is OneNiner anti Niner,he has now shown us he is un-american,lol.
...i wish "this people" will care this much about ticket prices....
...that why i can support this childish rants about crabtree....

Excellent post Brekkon !!! Logic and facts, what a concept !
I say pay him what he wants because if we dont we LOSE........this team needs him more than we are made to believe...
If he sucks - CUT him.....its that simple.
Oneniner: Why don't you kick in the $20 mil if you want him so bad. Maybe Alex will give you a loan.
Then when the new CBA kicks in and we can't resign PW or anybody else actually worth something, we can hear you complain about what went wrong.
I know what you are ,lol
I know what you are ,lol
Sorry DeioNiner, the ORG is simply asking Crabtree to accept the fact that he was picked #10 . . . it's that simple. He should take his one buck less than Raji offer and then go on a mission to stick-it up the arse of every team that passed on him, two of which are in our division.
Realfan49 - You may look at both sides but you choose to ignore inconvenient facts.
For instance . . . "Eddie wasn't stingy with money . . ." What you are implying is that the Yorks are stingy with money and that this has some bearing on why Crabtree is not yet signed. While this "stingy" reputation was true a number of years ago in more recent years they have signed Free Agents to overpaid contracts (Clements, J. Smith) admittedly because that is the only way they could get the players they wanted to come here AND resigned their own players they wanted to generous contract extensions AND signed each of their top draft picks the last six years without a problem until this year. But you want to throw all of these facts away and make a statement like that. Furthermore it is pretty well documented they have offered Crabtree a more than fair contract - including by ESPN's Michael Smith just this morning (refuting your point that it is only local writers saying the offer is fair).
Also - I 100% guarantee that you can't 100% guarantee anything like you claim because you have no idea. You have no idea how an NFL contract is negotiated or what negotiating has been going on on either side so quit acting like you do.
Cleveland Mike - Have a great time this weekend I will be there too (in Alex Smith's seats coincidentally since his family won't be coming to watch since he will not be playing!) They've put a lot of lipstick on The Stick since you were last there but you know how that saying goes. However I love it, its got character. There is a Stinking Rose food stand, the garlic chicken sandwiches are pretty good. That is my recommendation. They have done a pretty good job with the food.

Realfan: I am not going to hunt anymore for old blogs to see your additional comments anymore. But I did this time so here.
You need to learn better the difference between Guaranteed money and signing bonus in the NFL. They do not go hand in hand!
True
A Signing bonus is guaranteed money
False
All Guaranteed money is a signing bonus
Signing bonuses and other guarantees that are contract based are paid at once but count against the cap divided among the years of the contract up to a maximum of 6 years.
However if that player gets cut or retires or becomes no longer on the team. All signing bonuses and guarantees to be paid are EXCELLERATED. They dont get to keep being counted against the cap over the period over the term of the contract.
There are also various clauses that can be added to contracts. Such as "injury clauses" like the one with marvel smith.
For example haynsworth signed a 100mm deal with the redskins for 50 million guaranteed. If haynseworth had a career ending INJ tomorrow. That Guaranteed $$ would be excellerated to now and count against the cap this year and next year. 50/50 The redskins would be screwed cap wise if this were to happen so they have to protect themselves by adding clauses to the contract.
If this were to happen a portion of the moneys would be paid back based on the clauses of the contract and then what would happen is the team and player would probably reach an injury settlement. So $$ would exchange hands twice.
This IS how it works in the NFL.
This is why the guaranteed money is not truly guaranteed money.
So if you want to play the Guaranteed money game then length of contract still comes into play do the math. Who is making more guaranteed money PER YEAR? The 1st 2nd 3rd or 4th player selected?
Stafford #1 6.95 mm guar per year
Smith #2 6.6 mm guar per year
Jackson #3 6.2 mm guar per year
Curry #4 5.66 mm guar per year
Where is that slot busting guaranteed money your talking about?
Here is something else i was thinking about on my lunch...
For most of us that pay attention to football in general not just our 49ers. I'd imagine you might think the same thing I do when it comes to Crabs and Parker.
Now we have heard from everyone it seems like as to who is the driver in this hold out trip. but you have to ask your self, out of all the things that don't make sense. how many things do? what i mean by that is. Parker is not a stupid man. he may have just as bgid of an ego as deion and crabtree put together but hes not stupid. for those that have said it has all been parker and why hasnt crabtree fired parker yet to save his career. I ask those of you that believe its crabtrees doing the same question. Why hasnt Parker quit to save his reputation? I'm assuming he has every right to quit just like crabs has every right to fire him. So the only logically answer to both questions that makes sense would be that they are both equally involved.
With that being said. its very possible that it has to do with money. its also very possible that he doesnt want to play here. but i just find it hard to believe that both parker and crabs honestly feel if they hold out they will get the money they want somewhere else next year. in order for them to do that They would have to have a safety blanket to save both their reputations and the only way that could happen is if in fact other teams have been in contact with parker and crabs some how.If so all of this makes perfect sense then. and with Deion being from the NFL and having the connections he has. i wouldnt doubt that he was involved show how.
its something to think about........

I think Jed York should take Ronnie Lott or Jerry Rice into the meeting with him.
Getting an error I hope it didnt post several times like it did for others. If so sorry.
True, the Skins would have taken Crabtree. In fact as reported by Mike Silver who was in the war-room on draft day, the only team to call the Niners when they were on the clock at #10 was Washington, but McCloughan didn't bite.
Bottom line, we probably know why nine teams passed on a case of Crabs. 255 out of 256 drafted players have signed. This is a big red mark for Scot M. We are not good enough to wiff on a 1st round pick. There are some guys out there who could have been paying dividends right now. Do like the fact Jed is basically calling out Parker and Crabs. Maybe if he can't get some contract movement he will then press for a tampering investigation. Lastly, loved the win, but hope we actually open up the offense this week so the run game won’t look pathetic and we have a chance to really shine.
oneniner, it is not fair to say the 9ers org would think he would hold out this long. Some back and forth sure, but rookies get into camp at least before the opener.
The facts are against Crabtree and he should live with it. Did Willis Magahee (excus spelling) make a big deal b/c he slipped in the draft after sustaining an injury the last game of his college career? NO.
Fact:
- Crabtree is from a gimmick offense (Texas Tech this year is passing 75% or the time, wow)
- Crabtree didn't run in the combine (This is key for player evals)
- Crabtree had an injured foot (one that sometimes doesn't heal right)
- Crabtree has little exp playing elite college football (big 12)
- Crabtree was given Diva by the press (and he is proving them right)
- Crabtree didn't interview well with some teams (enough said)
- Crabtree did poor on Wonderlick (not that important, but is compounded with everything else and shows a pattern of behavior, or trends if you will)
- Crabtree had a red flag on his profile (this guy could be cancerous, however look at D. Jackson in Philly. He came in shut up and is just kicking a$$ and will be paid. By the way we took Balmer instead of him too.)
The 9ers took Crabtree with all this baggage and probably didn't expect the nightmare situation this turned out to be. They probably expected Crabtree to be thankfull he was grabbed by them, as HE KNEW WITHIN HIMSELF there was a lot to prove. Obviously he still is on the high horse.
Bottomline, 9ers were burnt. The only fault they had with picking Crabtree was not filling other areas of need. Don't get me wrong I wanted him too. It was a gamble that seems to not be paying off.
Oneniner - "If the niners had crabtree on their list they should have known there would be an issue with his contract..." To me this makes no sense. How could they possibly predict him taking such bad advice to heart. He is giving away at least $5 mil if he does not play this year that he will never get back.
"the raiders not picking him should have been a red flag" Please. The day they start following the Raiders' lead is the day I stop following them. Come on . . . seriously? You want them to look at what the worst franchise in the league does and say yeah, lets follow their lead.
"IT IS A FACT CRABTREE MAKES US BETTER - THE ORG KNEW THIS - THAT WAS WHY HE WAS DRAFTED - UNDISPUTED FACT" You are not clear on what constitutes a fact. They HOPE he makes them better, they THINK he makes them better. You never know and that to me is part of the strategy of just letting this play itself out. I am of the opinion it is going to be awhile anyway before Crabtree is able to make a contribution. Their receiver corp is pretty good, especially with Jones. Eventually he should be able to help . . . but not any time soon. In my opinion . . . OPINION not FACT get it?
"bottomline the ORG was trying to force crabtree into a contract they knew he was going to reject" RIDICULOUS STATEMENT. Seriously this makes me want to call you names but I will resist.
"I say pay him what he wants because if we dont we LOSE........this team needs him more than we are made to believe..." They have bee pretty clear that they can only go so far - and that means at least a $1 less than the #9 pick gets - because there would be nothing to stop their two 1st round draft picks from trying the same thing next year. And the one after that and the one after that. Makes pretty good long term business sense to me
...not sure what you have there are facts...
but you finished up wit ...."It was a gamble that seems to not be paying off."
WHO TOOK THE GAMBLE ?
lol....answer the question - then put the blame where it should be.

I used to enjoy NFL Network's game summaries, with Sanders' mouth I'll now avoid the show; at least until we have resolution, maybe longer. I'm thinking the 'conflict of interest' the commish mentioned recently may have been directed to Sanders. I think it wrong that he has the ability to promote one his wanna-be's on a show where he is employed. But that's just me.
I know know....capitalism is only for the guys in suits not the guys in jeans and sneakers...
ska - there's a stinking rose food stand??? Holy snacks I've never seen that before, you know about where its at??? I'm gonna be sittin' under the score board this Sunday, section 38, so I hope it's close!

Matt, I have a question for you, more about logistics for Crabtree. Being that he is basically a college student without a job, how the heck is he getting money to live?
Is he considered in the players union now and therefore gets some sort of support through that? Just wondering where he is getting money for living expenses and able to afford a hold out.
Thanks!
Stampede - Its not that close. Almost exactly opposite haha. But not that hard to walk to. Its behind the other endzone, or there abouts. Maybe a LITTLE bit on the side of the 49er sideline. Worth the walk. Well, before the game anyway.
Question: I have a question for you, more about logistics for Crabtree. Being that he is basically a college student without a job, how the heck is he getting money to live?
My response: He has already made a good chunk of change through endorsement deals, including a deal with Subway he signed in April. He also has deals with EA Sprts and Nike Jordan Brand, among others. --Matt M.
..good job...i respect that
at least you focused on my comments unlike the 58yr old wing nut who is unemployed and keeps collecting government handout, then claims he wants his country back from the real americans...
unfortunately...You are WRONG
It doesnt matter if the Yorks have all the money in the world in their pockets because there is a salary cap. You cant pay players whatever they want or you will be hurting in other areas because of the salary cap.
If you want to pretend there is no salary cap go hang out with carmen policy but there is one for now so live with it.
Paying crabs more then other first rounders more could bite us. We could end up with 1-3 good players and have very bad talent everywhere else. Then you would complain about how bad we are or how the Yorks wont pay Willis to stay when in reality they wouldn't be able to afford it without cap space.
If the 49ers cave they will have less negotiating power with future contracts. They will be stomped on when it comes to picks or players looking to re-sign.
They may have the money in their wallets but they wont have it under the salary cap and they wont be able to fill key positions. Not because because they dont have the money but because they dont have the cap room because it is all tied up in a few players.
Maybe this is the true reason you want this to happen oneniner... You want them to cave so that they can never establish a overall good team... that way you never run out of things to complain about.
Well, if he could catch a Dilfer knuckleball, he must have great hands. He should probably be playing D, because those are the players who normally caught Dilfer's passes.
As to the rest. If Trent Dilfer tells me the sun is shining I'm going to put on rain gear.
ya know, the idea of taking Jerry along would be brilliant. Isn't it too bad that 9er management did not bring him back (I think the primary to blame would be Nolan), maybe he could be influential in this situation.
To each their own. If Trent Dilfer told me the sun was shining, I'd put on rain gear.
It is encouraging that Crabtree could catch a Dilfer knuckleball. Usually, only DBs can do that.
Right on for the info though, I'll definately be making that trek. Mmmm, garlic.
Thanks Oneniner - I feel almost honored.
I will say this to everyone. If Crabtree says early next week he wants to meet with York and then signs I am going to be very perturbed at him. Whether its true or not I believe that will mean he decided it was more of a priority to him to go celebrate his birthday and attend the Texas - Texas Tech game and THEN come back and sign his contract and get started. Nothing will make me think otherwise and if true WHERE ARE HIS PRIORITIES? Say what you want but if that is what happens how can you come to a different conclusion? Why have they not gotten back to York and set up the meeting yet?
Matt,
This is probably naive on my part but it would be interesting to hear some thoughts from the companies endorsing Crabtree. At what point do they say a walking billboard who sits home on Sundays isn't worth the money. Or perhaps, these companies are worried about Crabtree's tainted image. Do they really want this kid representing their companies? I know these companies probably wouldn't comment publicly but they MUST be having these conversations.
oneniner, the whole draft is a gamble right. We gambled to bring in star WR to b/c we saw talent drop to an affordable price. Everyone wanted the 9ers to draft him. Orh might have been too early. Besides quality RT can be had in round 2 or 3. What really bothered me was, maybe Orakpo or Maybin...
Can't blame org for that pick. However, if you want to argue a pattern of behavior I would look at the last few years of draft picks. But why do that, let's move forward. Sing looks to have a good head as down young york. Next years draft will be fun.
Don't get me wrong, I still want Crabcakes. Add some "Old San Fran Bay" and he will be fine (sorry that was cheesy).
I hope at some point we finally hear the entire story on Crabtree.
I would like to here some receivers he would be comparable too. Which of his peers? He will never be a Randy Moss or TO. Maybe a Reggie Wayne or D. Jackson? Just how fast and quick is he?? Hard to tell on an NFL level.
Whatever ONE niner hater thinks ,the leadership of this team (Jed,Scotty,Sing etc) are doing a great job. And they don't care what hate filled traitors think (and neither do I).They do care what the loyal Niners fans think, and most are happy with the job they are doing.
Good job Niners, keep it up !
I just think in my gut that the fact that Crabtree has let this go to this length - and make no mistake the blame lies squarely on Crabtree's shoulders because the agent works for him and at any time he could have said I am signing because I want to go prove myself on the field - it just tells me that his priorities do not include making the type of committment and sacrifices it takes to be a good professional football player. My gut tells me his heart is not in the right place and that he is not the type of player that will fit well on a Mike Singletary coached team. Just my gut - he is not willing to lay it all out as 53 men on this roster have proved they are. Just my opinion.
That being said I am still pretty confident this is going to happen, he is going to sign. I predict after this second game. So then we will see . . .
"The NFL kicked off its 2009 season and the player who had a chance to be the most electric, dynamic young player in the league wasn’t even on the sideline. He was somewhere, maybe watching on TV, maybe not. He probably won’t be back for Week 2, either.
And at this point, there’s no denying it: Michael Crabtree is blowing a huge opportunity, and he’s either a complete head case or he’s getting bad advice.
The odds seem to be pretty much pick ’em on that one."

And did you see the article today a the rookie LBer Curry, who also held out of camp for 8 days this year? He said just what I have been saying all along(and what Crabtree's college HC has said ) that he(Curry) left ALL the contract negotiation to his agent, that's what he was hired to do. Like Crabs,he is interested in football and not business. They hired the agents to do the job for them and their families and Curry(and probably Crabs too) just sit and wait for the agent to call to tell them a deal is done.
The only difference is that Crabs is at a point now that curry never got to. And it is time for Crabs to get involved and either tell his agent to get him into camp or to fire the agent for poor representation.

Hi Matt, My 1st time doing this.
Could the 9ers sign Crabtree & then immediately trade him to ,say Dallas? Like when the Chargers picked Eli with the first pick & traded him to the Giants right away ,b/c Eli had said he wouldn't play for the Chargers.
FYI: House of Prime Rib is a great place to eat the night of a home Niner game. Niner players, visiting players and fans fill the place. Plus, it's great food at reasonable pice. I'll be there this Sunday.
That article on Athlonsports.com pretty well says it all.
> Could the 9ers sign Crabtree & then immediately trade him
No. Trade deadline for unsigned rookies already passed. Even sign & trade is no longer allowed.
Hey Matt, with Crabtree's holdout, you'd think those companies he has the endorsements with would have contractual requirements that he actually become a pro athlete before they actually pay out much of that money. Why would they pay anything for just an ex-college athlete?
Another Crabtree discussion.

The holdout is keeping Crabtree's name in the news. If anything, it makes him more marketable.
Interesting article MM just twitted. Gives an insight from other GMs in the league
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=cr-draftpickprotection091709&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
Not signing Crabtree may really be a blessing in disguise. With two 1st rounders next year, the money saved will be better spent in that much deeper draft. The '09 field was just too bare to get that excited about, and WR is not a need right now. Other GMs may say what they will to the press, but most have already squandered fortunes on other bust 1st rounders.
By the way, Crabtree has just as many catches this year as the Raider's Heyward-Bey...so, really, which team did a better job in the draft? Time will tell more, but the Niners have to be pleased so far.
Yep, that is our silver lining. Just sucks we have/soon to be had the receiver we needed.
If the pass rush and receiving group we have stays steady then we can focus on the QB and OT. We can sign DL and pass rush guys via FA. Can also pick up a proven receiver 2 years from now.
Would it be unprecedented in the modern era for at receiver to sit out a year when he doesn't have any other viable prospects (like baseball or golf) to make a professional athlete caliber income?

Sounds like the Niners are doing everything properly and that Parker is the main problem(probably not Crabs).
