Running back Frank Gore, who missed the past two games with a bum right ankle, went through a full practice today, as the 49ers began preparations to face the Houston Texans on Sunday. Gore had his right ankle taped as he went out to the practice field.
The 49ers announced that safety Reggie Smith will not play this week. He sustained a severe groin strain Sept. 27 against the Vikings. Also, safety Michael Lewis was limited in work because of the concussion he sustained Oct. 11 against the Falcons.
Coach Mike Singletary said earlier in the day he does not know whether Lewis will be available for Sunday's game. Lewis has experienced three concussions since mid-August. Veteran Mark Roman is the first safety off the sideline, so he would start if Lewis is unavailable.
Defensive end Ray McDonald (ankle) was limited in practice. There was talk last week that rookie Ricky Jean-Francois might suit up for the first time, but I don't know if that plan is still on the table after he missed his flight back to the Bay Area after the bye week. Jean-Francois arrived Monday afternoon and missed the team's walk-through practice that morning.
Cornerback Tarell Brown (illness) was also limited, and cornerback Marcus Hudson (shoulder) went through a full practice.
Guard Adam Snyder did not appear on the injury report. He left the 49ers' last game with a thigh contusion. He did not wear thigh pads because he thought they slowed him down. Now, he's wearing the pads, he said.

Sounds like the same guys keep getting hurt, are they not as durable or not taking care of themselves? If so, time to move on...Note to:McDonald. T. Brown. R.Smith and M.Hudson, all young guys that think they should be playing but can't stay healthy, glad we got Dre Bly---Hudson and Brown are ALWAYS "hurt"...Sing should ask:Are you hurt or injured? Because hurt is making too much to not be playing!
"He did not wear thigh pads because he thought they slowed him down. Now, he's wearing the pads, he said."
They make them for a reason buddy, lol.
Comment: "He did not wear thigh pads because he thought they slowed him down. Now, he's wearing the pads, he said." They make them for a reason buddy, lol.
My response: In college, players are required to wear the pads. You'd be surprised how many players do not wear them in the NFL. --Matt M.
Ah ok, didn't know that. I always thought they were just wearing some sort of high-tech thin pads lol.
Cups either.
If memory serves Jim Brown didn't wear hip pads. Anybody else do that? Others who don't wear pads?
Justin Smith looks like he doesn't wear shoulder pads.
Mark Roman starting? I'd rather take Michael Lewis post-concussion or even post-lobotomy. Putting Roman out there is like handing the other team one to two TD's.
Matt is it normal to have a weekly practice day closed to the team reporters?
Glad to know there's atleast one other person that's not afraid to speak the truth. His pass coverage skills are almost non existent.
Yes, those 40 pound thigh pads really will affect Snyder's top end speed?!?(wtf) Adam just please find somebody, anybody to block out there this sunday. I don't care who it is.
About Mark Roman, ( The gift that will always give!) take a look at the Roddy White 90 yard jog to the end zone. # 26 was at safety and took the wrong angle to make the tackle. I'm sure he will tell you it was Nate's fault. Roman is the wrong guy for the job because he cant be trusted. Nate Clements needs a crash course on being a safety. Move Tarel Brown to corner, continue to let Dre be Dre at nickel! Give Roman his walking papers.
No, we should keep Roman cause he's so smart, coaches say. Apparently not football smart. He probably can put a rubix cube together in less than 30 seconds. Yeah, thats smart!!!
well nate did miss the tackle... then mr 4.29 got burned... looked like roman was covering another receiver at the time. so yea that play WAS on nate.

It's pretty good, except for those who never want to hear or read anything negative about the Niners.
Yes Shield, Nate did miss the tackle. Roman was at safety in center field. He just took a horrible angle to the play and instead of attacking and cutting off the sideline, he ran straight up field and then over toward White, obviously too late. Nate should have made the tackle as well.
Glad to hear Gore is back at practice. I hope he lasts more than two series this time.
"Matt is it normal to have a weekly practice day closed to the team reporters?"
Didn't you read Matt's report first. HE SAID that Wednesdays are not open to the team reporters. (That seems pretty clear to me.)
Maybe that's when the 49ers expose their game plans more and the 49ers don't want the plan compromised by having outsiders witness it. They MUST have a good reason! Don't always be so suspicious, please!
Niner MOM
what are you talking about?
all the guy did is ask if all teams shut down wed practices, which matt DIDNT comment on.
just felt that was a bit over the top...
and yes Roman does suck and i dont care where he was on the field im sure he messed up that white Td somehow. thats just what i have come to exopect from him. this sun scares the crap out of me on offense and D
Nate Clements is a BUST as a SHUT DOWN CB!!
For 64 MILLION should bring you a shut down CB
Not a guy who gets lit up like a Christmas tree..And with NO pass rush to speak of his inabilities get exposed.
Put him on Andre Johnson and AJ will go for 11 catches and 175 yards and 2 tds..
Next draft maybe they can do a 1981 and draft 3 DB's.. BUT with NO pass rush and NO shut down DB's watch for Schaub to go for 300 yards and 4 tds...
AND then comes.. The COLTS.. OUCH
Can you say 3-4?????
NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-Not Mark Roman....
Oneniner is to Shaun Hill as Mark Roman is to me
