Coach Mike Singletary was the last person on the 49ers' side to talk to the media today. Generally, the head coach is the first.
Singletary returned to his hometown today, and the 49ers were simply awful in the first half. They fell behind 21-0. Before heading to the locker room, he suggested to offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye that the 49ers make a change at quarterback.
Raye was certainly not going to push back. After all, Raye believes in having a quarterback who can get the ball down the field to augment his power-running game. Alex Smith's strength is the intermediate and deep ball.
Smith played very well in the second half. He completed 15 of 22 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns - all to Vernon Davis. The only blemish was his last-pass interception, which came on a fourth-and-10. Smith's passer rating was 118.6 for the game. (Before the interception, his rating was 142.1.)
The 49ers fell to 3-3 on the season with a 24-21 loss to the Texans.
Singletary said after the game that he has not decided which quarterback will start next week when the 49ers travel to face the Indianapolis Colts. It seems pretty obvious here, but Singletary will likely make that announcement tomorrow.
* * *
Shaun Hill was replaced as quarterback after the 49ers struggled through a miserable first half. Hill completed 6 of 11 passes for 45 yards (passer rating of 64.6). He was sacked twice for 13 yards. Smith was not sacked in the second half.
Singletary pulled Hill aside at halftime to tell him Smith would go into the game. Hill said he did not resist the change because Singletary was adamant about the decision.
Here's what Singletary said in his postgame remarks:
--"I just felt it was time to make the (quarterback) switch. It was no long, drawn-out process. Hey, you know what, let's make the change."
--When asked which player will start next week, Singletary said, "I can't say that going forward. We need to look at the film and look at some of the decisions that were made on behalf of both quarterbacks."
--"We have to sit down as a staff and look at that. I don't like going back and forth. But we're going to have to sit down and look at it and see what's best for the team. We certainly have tools. There's no reason in the world why we're not playing better on offense."
--Singletary said it seemed like Smith got better protection but he said he can't make that blanket statement. He said he wasn't sure if it was the way Smith played or if the offensive line improved.
--When asked if Hill was playing poorly, Singletary answered, "I can't say that. I can't say that without looking at the film. It looked like he didn't have a chance to throw the ball. I don't know."
--"Our offense was in a rut and we have playmakers on the field," Singletary said. "We just felt we need a change, we needed a spark. And felt if Alex had that opportunity to come in and see what he could do."
--When asked how Smith did, Singletary said, "Pretty decent. I thought he moved the team pretty well. I thought he made the plays he needed to make. That was good to see."
--"We knew it would be a game of detail coming in here, and to find ourselves in a situation where we have to dig ourselves out of in the second half on the road is unacceptable," Singletary said. "Alex came in and seemed to perk up the offense, but we just didn't play well. We got to get better on the offensive line."
--"I got to look at the film and continue to make the changes that are necessary to get better," Singletary said. "We're going to put the guys on the field who can play and give us the best chance to win."
--Singletary said he did not know the extent of the left shoulder contusion to starting right tackle Tony Pashos. He did not play in the second half, with Barry Sims taking over. Also on the injury report were: LB Takeo Spikes (right shoulder strain), DT Aubrayo Franklin (right knee), DE Justin Smith (left calf strain) and LB Marques Harris (hamstring strain).
--Singletary was asked if Crabtree's presence had anything to do with Vernon Davis' big game. Singletary said he thinks
--Crabtree played 89-percent of the 49ers' offensive plays. Here is how many plays the 49ers' wideouts played today (the 49ers had 54 snaps on offense):
Crabtree 48
Morgan 38
Bruce 36
"Bottom line is, when he (Crabtree) had a chance to make plays, he made them," Singletary said. "You're talking about a guy who's been working his tail off, hasn't been to camp and came in today and looks like he's been here a while."
* * *
Arnaz Battle muffed a punt that set up a Texans touchdown.
"Allen had some issues, too, OK?" Singletary said. "It's not like he was catching everything clean. They both have issues. We just have to find a way to get that settled. And it's something we have to settle in a hurry. That makes no sense at all . . . it makes no sense to be dropping balls."
* * *
49ers inactives for the game were: quarterback Nate Davis (he did not make the trip due to an illness), safeties Michael Lewis and Reggie Smith, center Cody Wallace, WRs Micheal Spurlock, Brandon Jones and Jason Hill, and defensive lineman Ricky Jean-Francois.

Singletary was a no show on the 49er post game.
Sack up coach!
Two weeks ago I bought a "Dont tell me, SHOW me" T-shirt.
I feel like using it for toilet paper now.
Wake up Singletary, you dont have the personnel to be a power running team.
Check you ego and adapt the strategy to your personnel.
I've said it all along, Smith will get his chance, and will show all the haters that he isn't a bust. It was awesome seeing him play today. I'm very confident in our offense with Smith at the helm, although there are issues that need addressed (penalties, Rachal's play, Jones/Hill inactive, etc). Indy will be a tough test for us
This loss, like all the losses so far, can be placed squarely at the feet of Mike Singletary, Jimmy Raye and Scott McLoughan.
Chilo Rachal is clearly a bust. That's on McLoughan. They dumped Allen Rossum, that's also on McLoughan. The Texans' second TD can be traced to the release of Allen Rossum.
But the largest responsibility for what has become this trainwreck belongs to Mike Singletary and Jimmy Raye.
Sing is in waay over his head. We need the West Coast Offense back in SF if we want to win. Raye doesn't know West Coast from West Ghost.
Maybe Alex Smith can be the QB we want him to be, but in the non-scheme of Jimmy Raye and Mike Singletary, I don't care if you have Joe in his prime with Steve in his prime as a backup, the goddam team is going to lose.
Very simply they have no plan, no scheme, no clue and no hope. If Jed York has an ounce of self-respect and an ounce of common sense, the triumvirate of failure will be fired at the end of the season, and they will bring in Mike Shanahan, Mike Holmgren or Jon Gruden, and they'll
back up whatever truck is necessary to get a real GM in here.
If they don't do that, I don't expect the 49ers to make the playoffs again in my lifetime, and I'm only 55 years old.
finally we benched that garbage for smitty! and oh my word did smitty show up! yes! i got my jersey on right now and not taking it off till next week. great to see our offense open up once smitty stepped on the field, and look we do have WR playing after all. who would have thought? smitty outplayed hills 6 games in one half. and crabs is going to be special. smitty better be starting next week.
jones and hill inactives are a moot point now because we have a qb that cant throw to them now. and not only throw it but get it down field too.
"Raye's power running game" ??
You have to be kidding me. If he ever had one of them, it wasn't in SF.
Sing needs to be put on the spot on what the heck he was doing when he fired Martz for Raye. Upgrade it was not.
Wow, what a game..I just got home & have to say the 49ers are teasing!!!!
The first half was a joke, all the Texans fans were harassing...felt like leaving. The second half was all about building up excitement...and it kept getting exciting. To bad we lost, but at least it turned out to be a fun game...all the Texans fans were quite!
By the way, Crabtree was open a whole lot :)
What? That makes no sense. What do you mean our QB "can't throw it" to them? Why would we spend so much money on an explosive guy like Jones for him to stand around on the sidelines?
If we're going to open this offense up like we did in the 2nd half today, we need at least one of those guys active. Jones will do nothing but help us.
Matt: I am only going to comment on Crabs here...
I understand what you said on your twitter now about him looking different when he catches the ball. he just reaches out and attacks the ball with his hands. I have been his biggest advocate on this blog, as I felt he was the best player in the last draft.
I think after only a few practices, most of the staff must have been walking around with smiles on their faces. I think they feel they got the player they thought they were going to get... a pretty nice feeling if you feel you get the best player in the draft at 10th spot.
Alex has obviously slowed things down...and he's grown up. he's always had enough arm and mobility. let's pray the staff are willing to gameplan to his strengths.
Call me a crazy conspiracy theorist, but I have never seen a Niner game when Mike Carey officiates it and it is called fairly. Today was no different. He went to Santa Clara University and probably couldn't stand how great they were back in the day. Just my theroy.
This is ridicules. After we score our first TD and have the Texans guessing, Raye goes back to two runs and a pass. Another 3 and out. Great job of keeping the momentum.
What Alex brings to the table:
Teams will have to respect the 10-20 yard pass with
Smith. That will open up the running game. With Hill, most passes are 5-10 yards and teams are sitting on everything and we can't run or pass.
With Smith in the game, we still couldn't run.
RealFan: We were down 21-0 and in a spread offense... I don't think the running game was our primary concern
This just in: the 49ERS are NOT a running team.
PERIOD.
Wake up Chimpy Raye!
while i agree our offensive system is not succeeding i would like to point out that of the three coaches u suggested one did worse than SF last year in a very messed up year (Holmgren), one managed one more win and had a defense that gave up around 400 point (Shannahan), and one who took a Tampa team that when he got there was a playoff contender and watched as it got old and now is dead (Gruden)
In addition we are six weeks into the season lets give them at least a half a season before we start calling for a new head coach
Because whether or not sing is a good coach
because even the greatest coaches of all time did not win a super bowl in 6 WEEKS!
How's this for an idea - Smith starts, runs up a comfortable lead then Hill comes in and Plays the 4th quarter using his management skills to finish the game w/o turnovers or unnecessary penalities. Sounds like a win- win to me.
because hill couldnt throw down field. plus he was injured some of the games. jones has speed as does hill but didnt matter because hill cant throw deep. thats what i was saying
I think Smith would've gotten the start earlier if Hill wasn't the incumbent. You have to knock out the champ. Today they through in the towel on Hill.
Raptor: Sadly, as long as they have Sing and Raye, they won't be a passing team, either. They will be a LOSING team. Just like they are now (1-3 in the past four games).
Sing and Raye are losers. Sing was a great player but all his jabbering amounts to nothing. They should bring in Holmgren or Shanahan next season. Sing can stay as defensive assistant or go back to the Ravens. Or go to Denver to be with his mentor Nolan.
Hey, all you guys who have been hammering Oneniner, man up and give him his due today!
Oh... and Crabtree, Davis and Alex far exceeded my expectations. Kudos to all three.
Bravo!!! You hit it on the head. Singletary is in so far over his head, he could be on the deck of the Titanic. The boy-king Jed, who is also in WAY over his head, should bring in Holmgren as GM and Gruden as head coach.
Ah, I see. I guess I should have clarified. I was trying to say that in the future games going forward, it will be an issue if these guys continue to be inactive.
ah yeah i see what your saying! i dont think they will if smitty or nate is playing =)
We're finally looking balanced. -Alex just looked on fire cause he was just so comfortable in that passing system (the spread/digit). He's had a quarter of the season to initialize the system and catch up and it's showing (along with 2 years of golden bench time to catch up with the speed of the game).
That offense looked very Norv Turner-esq today, and that's the way it was built back in 2006. -Sorry Sing, but that's just the way it is, Shaun Hill sucks.
Also, staying behind on the bye week to practice with your new passing weapon also goes a long way.
I swear, every post you make, you're just saying the same BS over and over again. We get it, you don't like Jed, Mac, Sing, and whoever else. Nobody cares. Find something new to talk about
Keep in mind, in Seattle, they were devastated by injuries. Shanahan has a lot more gas in the tank, he just ran out his string in Denver. He should not be the final say in personnel moves, there should be a GM for that, but not McLoughan. They need the WCO here, and they need WCO people. Sing and Raye are the antithesis of the WCO.
My vote is for Shanahan, but I'd take either of the other two over Sing and Raye, in a New York minute.
Do you know your recent NFL front office history? Do you relish having 7 QBs on your roster?
good post
First off it safe to say that Alex Smith has great potential, I know its been 1 game but you have to admit he looked comfortable and smooth out there.. I will say we are no where near a power running football team not cause of Frank but our O-line is completely suspect in all aspects but they did hold up on passing plays in the 2nd half.. Crabtree, Wow! for someone that didn't show up in camp/games (holdout) to start today and give that kind of performance Im anxious to see him for the remainder of the season.. Defense I cant say anything bad about them, say what you want but THEY pretty much played the WHOLE 1st half, and when our offense finally showed up in the 2nd half our D held the Texans to 3 points.. My last thoughts on today's game, did anyone other than myself see Pwilly get tackled by the O-lineman on Slaton's 2nd TD????
There go's the season. Alex looked good in the middle of the game. You Alex fans sure you want to put yourselves through this again? When a team is preparing for him the real smith will come out. The bust. Nate Davis is one step closer to starting. We got one guy who can't throw an out, and one guy who can't throw 10 yards accuratly. Weeez in trouble y'all.
See my first post in response to your last question.
Another loss, we're 3-3. I think we can still make the playoffs.
Nice debut by Crabtree. I hope he can keep it up.
Nice game by Smith. I have been a Hill guy from the outset and don't apologize for that. But I've always said that I'm a 49er fan, first and last.
I don't mind if Smith starts next week. I don't think either Smith or Hill is Peyton Manning. I'm after the wins.
Finally, I must salute OneNiner and the others who have consistently promoted Smith. I will always maintain they were unduly harsh on Hill, and excessively optimistic about Smith.
However, credit where it's due. Smith had a good half-game and he made his supporters look good.
If Smith can take us to the playoffs, go Alex! I'm not holding my breath, but if he's our guy, I'm behind him.
Matt, offense was just horrible in the first half! I have been a big supporter of Jimmy Raye but his play calling in the first half lacked any imagination period. Why do you think the offense looks so confused! can you please shed some light on the following topices:
- why we had several delays of game in very crucial moments? I was shocked with the last delay penalty! there is no excuses! this is a pro team!
- How come we do not utilize a no huddle offense to keep defense off balance?
- why defense is getting exposed against the pass lately and we are not generating much pressure in the past few games?
-Battle called fair catch everytime he was back there so we did not have a treat for returning punts! Are ninners going to keep battle as a punt returner?
I truly hope we can pull out an upset and beat the colts next week. Thank you
Instead of continuing to just say, over and over, that we need to go the WCO TeleCat, why don't you show us the logic, the statistics, the reasons behind your statements INSTEAD of just your opinion! It's easy to just make a blanket statement but it is so much harder to back it up. The last statistical check I ever saw showed that today's defenses have caught up to the WCO with one of the reasons being the speed by the defensive players. Also, total points are now gained more by teams who pass the ball vertical vs the WCO (points are lower). The next thing you'll complain about is that any of those particular coaches you mentioned don't run it exactly the Walsh did it, because believe, the only one that was close was Holgren. Personally, a) I don't believe in living in the past and b) I think the team is still in need of more talent. Yes, that indicates a negative remark on Scott McG but on the other hand, it has also brought in some good players. The cupboard was ABSOLUTELY bare when he came onboard. But what irks me about posters like you is, you just spit out weak opinions/blanket statements and have nothing of substance behind your opinion.
The clock management sucks big time! It sucked last year and it seems to be rearing its ugly head again! Why the team didn't use the no huddle more often in the last quarter was a bad mistake!
Smith was picking the Houston D backfield apart! Any one with any offensive sense should have seen that! The more chances you could give Smith in this game the better! We must have left at least 10 plays on the sideline!
Questionable coaching for sure! MS needs to take more control over this problem! There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for delay of game penalties, especially at that time of the game! It makes it seem like the coaching staff doesn't know what its doing!
I am not shocked by MC not saying Alex will be the starting QB. We need a headline for Tuesday's paper. Matt, I hoped you thanked him for giving you a headline...JK
There is no doubt A. Smith will be the starter next week.
As for all you peeps saying we need a new HC and OC....give it up bro. If we get news ones we will need another 2 yrs. before we get anywhere. MC and JR will be fine now that THE CHOSEN ONE (A. Smith) and King Crabs is back in the city of Gold and Red.
Will the genius referring to Coach Raye as chimpy desist NOW -not only is it disrespectful, it smacks of other issues which you need to keep to yourself.I am ok with critical commentary but personal attacks of this nature are just so lowbrow they do not deserve a public forum.Sad about the loss but happy for Alex. Kudos to Vernon and Crabs, and yes Chilo needs to be benched but that doesn't make him a bust imo. Next game is very difficult-we will see what the intestinal makeup of our team and fan base is in the next few games.Chances are high we will lose a few more in this part of schedule-can we hang tough and pull a playoff spot toward the latter part of our season.Who among you will remain faithful now?
Singletary gives the enterprising double-talk in postgame media conferences. He said he's not sure about the QB job because, maybe, the O-line just improved in the second half. Then he said, "Alex came in and seemed to perk up the offense, but we just didn't play well. We got to get better on the offensive line." Hey, we saw the game and 3 touchdown passes trumps 45 yards in passing and zero points.
While Singletary seems like the classic authoritarian coach who will never admit his philosophy is wrong, I do like that he doesn't tap-dance around players' feelings and just calls on the players he feels will play best. There are veteran NFL coaches who'll win more than Singletary who would taken weeks to have pulled Hill. And, if he does nothing else as an NFL head coach, Singletary's decision to take Crabtree and just put him on the field after that long, nasty holdout will be remembered.
I don't like the guy's philosophy or his safety-first approach to offense that literally drove me away from the TV, but Singletary deserves credit for exposing some NFL "truths" as false.
First, playing wide receiver isn't rocket science. Crabtree didn't need weeks and weeks to learn routes and get timing down. He was good for Hill, then just as good for Smith. Remember the "experts" saying Crabtree wouldn't contribute this year? Not enough practice time? How many passes do you figure Smith threw him in practice? Really good players just need a chance to play.
Second, a game plan can be changed on a dime -- they went from that dreadful ground game the O-line can't handle to a spread offense that forced the Texans to defend the entire field. So, there's really no reason to go down in flames if you have a QB who can throw the ball near Vernon Davis, Crabtree, etc. They even lined up four wideouts after Fox analyst Brian Billick said they don't have a four-wideout package.
Third, it doesn't throw a team into schizophrenic fits if you change QBs without days of practice, a formal announcement and time for the blockers to wrap their minds around the move.
I'm willing to believe Singletary's smart enough to back off the wild-eyed authoritarian approach, over time, and ease into the idea that he'll have to adjust to the talent he has on offense.
Terry, I compeletly agree. I will support coach singlatory, however poor clock managment is absolutely unacceptable. This game reminded me of Nolan! Also, yes Alex played much better than i have remember and seem to be cool under pressure, however QBs need to do a better job off managing the clock!!!
I am so furstrated! We should have won this game.
Any of you guys have any ideas why our D is all of a sudden getting exposed? It seemed quicker and now they seem to be in slow motion! Could it be the D is on the field too much?
DEAD WOOD: Arnaz battle, Isaac Bruce, Mark Roman, and Michael Robinson
On the team but do not contribute.
ON THE RISE: Alex Smith, Michael Crabtree, Josh Morgan.
They make plays!
Finally it takes rock bottom to make a change. You see Smith make quick decsions finally, but Raye's playcalling was better but is this because they were down and had to throw. Kudos to one niner, I beleieved in your horrible asessments about Smith all along, keep the fight bro!
Matt,
Singletary has proved he will make changes. Interesting he says he needs to look at the film before commenting on change. Alex was under pressure as much as Hill, but he used his legs, which created additional problems for their defense. When the Niners won last year after Singletary took over, it wasn't power running and defense only. Martz adjusted to Hill, but he kept things creative. They need to start Smith and activate the weapons - Brandon Jones and J. Hill - to support Smith, Crabtree, VD, and Morgan. Lately, it has been Niners line up and get smashed in the mouth.
Matt, you mentioned that Smith's throws looked really good in the pre-season. Smith should start, but OL needs major improvement or Smith's second chance will be short-lived.
clearly some begrudging hill supporters.....still calling smith a hoax.....
fortunes of this team still rides on the OL whether hill or smith are in.....so why did the OL look better in the 2nd half....with an injury to pashos and simms coming in seems to me that the OL was in more disarray with smith in there than hill.
Why did raye go to the spread offense?....that was a pretty good half time adjustment.....
yes teams will scheme against smith now...but he showed some touch passing today as well as some zip passing and with quality rcvrs with strong hands like crabtree's this could be good news for any QB......i was of the opinion that crabtree was going to save hill's job but it turned out it accentuated smith's MO's....crabtree caught a high throw with some mustard on it and another pass on an out pattern picked it out of the air with defenders hands in the catching zone..
OK, will smith get the next five games? All games outside of the division but wildly diverse team like 6-0 indy and 0-6 tenn.....this could be snake eyes scenerio...tenn could be dangerous .....
then chicago.....i would like smith to get comfortable in the offense going into the GB just to set up that game tag of rodgers vs smith.....
yeah buffalo beat the panthers
I think MS is using his head if he doesn't say who is the starter next week! Let Indy worry about who'll they'll face!
Work Smith with the 1st team and leave the Colts wondering! Not much tape of Smith available to look at! Just one half so far this year!
i agree, the clock mangement was god awful. and that is coaching. the delay of games penalties killed us. espcially the last one. hope they fix this before next weeks game.
They need to activate Brandon Jones and J. Hill - Smith needs more weapons and a 4 wideout formation. We are not a power running team that can count on our defense to keep us in a low scoring game. When we won at the end of last year, it was Martz adjusting to Shaun Hill, yet the offensive was still creative - not a power running team. Our defense has had pressure on them all year to do more, more, more, including scoring to keep us in games. It's time to open up the offense. They will find in the process, Gore will get more room to run and the defense will play better because they will know the Niners can move the ball and score.
How many sacks and pressures is Singltary going to obsorb because of Chilo Rachal #62? I am amazed he is in the line up. That last drive he made another "look out" block on third down and Smith has to throw it away to save the sack. Rachal has no business being on the field - he has personnally created more than his share in the "three & out" category. Geez...
I want to get everyone's opinion on the following names for Crabtree.
So far I have:
King Crabs
Grabtree
Any thoughts?
i know too early, but about the 12 and 13 picks in the next draft
Hey jg, I am orig. from Windsor (not that it matters). I think they should pick T. Mays 1st than go after an o-lineman or d-lineman. I like the kid from SC I think he is #91. Big DT. This would be a good pick if they want to continue to use the 3-4 defense. This type of d needs a big DT to clog up the blockers to allow the LBs to get in. Or they could go for the guy from Oklahoma for a long-term o-lineman. The future is bright.
i am just hoping the niners spread all kinds of disease throughout the NFL with crabs and VD
What is the defenses of the NFL going to do when you have Grabtree, B. Jones lined up at the right, Morgan on the left and V. Davis at the TE position? Gore in the backfield. That looks like a big miss-match for a lot of DBs...
"Staying behind in the bye week to practice with your new passing weapon also goes a long way."
That really paid off--(having Alex stay behind to practice throwing balls to rookie Crabtree; that way, they got in synch with each other in the Bye week. Almost seems like crystal ball calibre!
Well, I can hardly contain my excitement now that I've seen how well Alex played and connected with Davis, Crabtree, and Morgan! At least our O has a hopeful FUTURE!
I was overwhelmed with how well a ROOKIE WR played in his first NFL game--even with no offseason training and practices with his team. I was expecting him to get CREAMED! He is amazing!
Before the 2nd half, I was feeling despondent that we'd never be able to win games with the terrible QB-WR connectivity we were getting (with Sean at the helm). Now, I'm not knocking Hill because he is a lovely person, but I think he has lost all confidence (the OL can't protect him and he never had enough time to throw the ball to receivers; it must have been HELL for him on the field, poor guy).
If Coach can't see the OBVIOUS difference between the lst and 2nd halves of today's game, then he is blind or obstinate. I do think Sing didn't want to make a statement that would CRUSH Sean Hill's morale today--after a devastating half for him. So, maybe he was just trying to save face for Sean by not committing the QB position to Alex. Mark my words!
Now, if Alex can be consistently good (as he was today) in the oncoming games, then we should SIT "old man" Bruce and PLAY Brandon Jones and Jason Hill--who are quicker receivers and to whom Alex can throw balls downfield. That's why those two were not even suited up for the game (because Sean's arm was not strong enough for long throws).
So, now you can see why I'm excited about the FUTURE of the 49ers' offensive game. With Alex, Mike, Brandon, Jason, and Josh as receivers + Davis and Walker (who also have great hands--as well as Gore), we have the playmakers now to some points on the scoreboard.
Bring on the Colts next Sunday! Now we can play them without getting embarrassed about the 49ers' being unable to score TD's.
The thing we really need now, though, is to find a decent PR/KR man. I guess we let Rossum go too soon. I wonder if there's anyone on our team now who has solid hands to handle that tough job.
Defense played much better today (over last week's game), but there were some sloppy tackles that need to be improved on.
All in all, I feel MUCH better after the 2nd half of today's game than I've felt in a month or longer (as far as the offense's ability to score points). Now I have HOPE...
Niner Mom
The logic is whatever Raye and Sing are doing is FAILING. They've lost three out of the last four. They are NOT a power running team. Take away the long runs against Seattle and they're not averaging 3 YPC. Those are all the statistics I need.
So what do you do, you can't run because no one respects your passing game. So you Change your game plan and exploit the strengths of the players you have. How about some crossing patterns to Davis or Crabtree, some screens to Gore. They've forgotten the crossing route almost completely, which was a staple of the 49ers offense when they were WINNING. Davis can be a YAC guy, and I believe Morgan and Crabs can be too, but they have to have a play-caller who knows what he's doing. Raye does not. THe results speak for themselves.
Lack of imagination in the offense is KILLING the Niners. The WCO is imaginative.
We are not a vertical team. This team is almost perfectly suited to the WCO because of the players they have. Davis is turning into the stud we wanted him to be. Crabs will develop.
As for living in the past, I'd say the three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust approach you're advocating is a lot more in the past than anything I'm suggesting. Sing is trying to use a 1940 approach to offense in 2009. It's NOT going to work.
The results speak for themselves. You can keep your head up your butt all you want but the truth only smiles. Sing, Raye and McLoughan should be fired at the end of the season, period.
C'mon, folks, after a couple of early wins our expectations became to high and we were over-reaching. This is not a 10 win team and we knew that going into the season. We want to see improvement over last year and the reality is that we could still take the west with an 8-8 record. Arizona will be our biggest challange but they are'nt a superpower so there is hope. When Hill won the starting QB job at the end of camp I was one of the first to say "its a long season, and if Hill gets hurt or goes into the tank Smith will be ready to prove himself." I think he has earned the opportunity to start next week and salvage the season as well as his career. Hey, Coach; its a no-brainer!
I was so happy when I saw Smith on the field in the 2nd half...about time! It did not make sense to have an NFL starter on the sideline and a typical back up QB running the offense. Yes, Smith will have more interceptions than Hill but he also makes plays that Hill can't even imagine.
May I suggest that the reason Smith did not get sacked was him getting rid of the ball quickly? Hill hangs on to the ball too long AND he doesn't know how to get away from the pass rushers.
I still can't believe that Brandon Jones is not getting any playing time. Why? I just want to know why!
Matt,
Maybe one of these days when things are a little slow you can write about the 49ers draft under McCloughan?? I'm interested to know how they compare against other NFC west teams and maybe a team which consistently drafts well, like the Patriots, during the past 7-8 years.
Hey, Telecat, if you're going to point fingers buy yourself a friggin clue, noob. McCloughan drafts the players, Singletary keeps who he wants to keeps, starts who he wants to start and that is the end of the story.
As for Rachel, Christ, he hasn't even completed one full season of starting yet! Kind of early to proclaim bust, especially as last year he didn't give up a sack and was a wrecking-crew in the run game. Seriously, get a grip.I am starting a petition to get Telecat banned from this site on the grounds of insanity. I think he is really a Raider fan and since all they see is black, he is hating on the 9ers.
Go back to your blackhole Creep!!!
oregon49er....i only get to visit windsor for a few days at a time for the last 4 years since i have lived in shanghai and germany during that time.....watching most games on slingbox and HAVA... i would like to get back for next year so i can play in that old man baseball league..
I agree with the Mays pick to be followed by a edge pass rusher and OL stuff probably in that order (maybe all by the end of the 2nd round if Scott gets lucky) ....but the panthers will have to really start losing to get the chance to pick Mays IMO.....I will have to start looking at the panther's schedule to see how many more losses I can expect...losing to buffalo was big.
I am still on pins and needles on the smith recurrence.....I really want him to succeed so that the niners' don't really have to focus getting a first round QB....although i really don't see any really good college QB's maybe McCoy is OK, Tebow and Strafford don't cut it for me.
I think if we do end up needing to draft a QB McCoy is the guy we should go after. I would also prefer Smith does well and continues to progress.
Pass rush. We schemed one in the early games. They've now figured our schemes so no rush.
You keep apologizing for stupidity, Moses. As for being a "noob," I'm probably older than your dad, junior. I remember the bad old days of the mid-late '70s and we are there and have been there for a long time.
It's true Sing starts who he wants to start but McLoughan is the man with the final say about who is kept. So who needs a clue, junior?
As for Rachal, what you clearly have yet to learn is the NFL is a "what have you done for me lately" kind of business. Rachal is playing like a Div 3 college player. If you want to keep a player like that, who needs a clue?
Michael "The Deadliest Catch" Crabtree
You are exactly right - early wins set high expectations. Two of those games could have gone the other way. Niners definitely need a better pass rush to take pressure off of DB's. Niner offense can still do well next week. Colts defense is not that great if they can control Freeney. But it is a road game.
Good one Sono. A little long but I like it!
MM,
I am sure the Press Democrat will understand if you take a sick day tomorrow after seeing all these Hill fans jump on the A. Smith bandwagon.
1.) I've been one of the biggest S.Hill supporters on here and I say it's time to start Smith. He showed chemistry with V.D, Crabs and Morgan... our 3 best receiving threats.
2.) O-Line is going to be an issue... good luck Sing but we have the same singers singing the same song. Maybe by changing the tune (Smith) this will improve.
3.) Defense has to be more consistent... maybe it's our offense slow starts but we have to STOP giving up 3 - 4 HUGE plays a game
4.) Crabtree is the real deal!!! played 89% of the game and made 4 1st downs???? 2 weeks practice???
ONENINER... I hope you have been right all along.... Smith to Crabtree is the future
I wonder how Smith can even walk after everyone is swinging from his....u know whutz!
Make some room on there for Telecat!
Talking of Chilo.... Don't forget how he got totally embarrassed by a 39 year old D lineman in the first quarter. If he had an ounce of shame he would retire.
I think Singletary misled us big time on the O line changes he promised after the Atlanta game. There really were no changes. What Sing gabe us was more like a re-arrangement of the deck chairs on the titanic.
We are not a power running team.
This is test time for Sing. He can't will us to have talent or be something we are not. He has to adapt. We have to open up the passing game. If Smith's good half isn't an anomaly, then we have more options in the passing game. A shootout seems like a bad idea against Indy, but we just...can't...run.
If he comes out next week and stubbornly, predictably, runs the same ineffective running plays and we find ourselves down 3 touchdowns early, then my optimism for Sing wanes considerably.
Yeah, when you have no reply, no substance, attack.
Take a seat, junior.
"let's pray the staff are willing to gameplan to his strengths."
That statement summarizes good coaching/management. We're seeing if/how the team gels.
1..What is up with the staff for this team??? Do they want to win? Singletary should have came out and said Smith is the unequivacle starter for the rest of the year no matter what happens from this point on. That he played a hell of a game and he can’t wait to get him back on the field after a weeks worth of preparing him with the first team offense. We need to ride the Smith Wave and get things turned around again. At least that way at the end of the year we will know what we really have at the qb position and can make moves from that point on. Now is the time to getr behind Alex all the way and make it a positive experience where he is not looking over his shoulder and the team is not worring about who is starting blah blah blah. Get it together NINERs for all of our sakes.
I can't take radnich and the old mayor anymore. Enough with the laughing and talkin non sense. Put Damon Bruce on there
To prove a few people wrong; The WCO hasn't been run truly in awhile and hasn't won a superbowl since Gruden who basically had one of the best defenses and worst offenses to win a superbowl ever. Stop with the callouts to hire Gruden/shanahan/holmgrem. Good god. We are running the proper offense we just need a QB to execute it properly. If Alex Smith can do that then Im all for him. remember, all who said he busted, his college coach said he would take awhile to develop and he was 20 years old when he was drafted. If he had proper coaching his first 4 years we would be talking about a successful QB. I'm glad he looked good today and we actually have more weapons in the passing game then running game now. If we can run an unpredictable offense and keep the defense off balance we could be ok but hiring a has been WCO coach is not the answer for us.
You said it. His radio show sucks and so does this show. He's not funny and NOBODY can get a word in without his dumbass interupting them in mid sentence with some corny joke.
If you split today's game between 1st half and 2nd half, we lost the first badly, but won the second by quite a margin. Singletary needs to resolve his O-line problems, and find another running back that poses a threat to the other team. If he does those two things, I think we can move this team up a level, and be legitimate playoff team. Congrats to Alex Smith, I hope he sends a copy of the game film to Mike Nolan!
Calm down smith lovers. Didn't he throw the game losing interception? When smith gets us to the playoffs then I'll believe. Until then. I will have to say it's all smoke and mirrors. That's for you b buck. I'm all for the niners winning, but I have to see it first. This season so far looks like the past 3 start off good. Then hit the wall in mid-season then finish the last 3 strong. We need holmgren back home. Go NY Giants tonight.
Dear oneniner,
You were perfectly right! Smith has the ability to rally but we ran out of time too bad. But for me its a feel good loss i agree that we should activate brandon jones and jason hill and let go of bruce n spurlock. Crabtree is impressive. I still believe we can hack this abd win more games. I hope wecan avoid those annoying penalties. Godspeed the 49ers!
Raptor is right on the money with that one. The Niners seem to finally have some decent personnel for the old west coast offense now or at least play to smiths strength and go to a spread offense. we need to pass to set up the run instead of blowing a quarter on trying to run it and then having to try to dig out of a hole.
If you wanted to play smash mouth we should have drafted an o-line because the current guys are reminding no one of the hogs.
I think it is pretty hypocritical of Sing to put the best player on the field to win the game, yet he doesn't play to our strengths, being the pass, that would give us the best chance to win!
To ninermd; Yes, Smith threw an interception, but it was against a three man rush with virtually 8 defenders playing 10-20 yards downfield and OBTW I believe they were expecting pass! I chose to focus on his three passes for touchdowns and his ability to add a spark to an offense that had gone into the tank for 6 quarters. This loss cannot be placed on Smith' lap. Our defense has been staggering over the past two games and if we don't regain our early season QB pressure we will need more than a rejuvenated A.Smith!
I don't even know what to say about this loss.. I do notice a lot of new names on here, however.
Where are all the SMITH haters???? Come on you Shaun Hill nut-huggers?!?!?
Finally somebody who can throw a football! Penalties and the muffed punt killed us today, boys. This one hurts!
Are you people crazy for apologizing to the one who should never be mentioned? The guys is a mental midget. If you know anything about the game, you know that the kid deserved one more chance. He has come along way. Get a clue, the kid has skills. Since he was a pup. He has been through the ringer. It's a long season. What a confused group of people. God Bless, I love this blog and most of you guys that blog here. But my goodness. The one who should never be mentioned is a troll. Emotion is such a huge part of the game. 10 games to go. We have a chance to get to the playoffs. Ring your pantys out. These are the dog days of the NFL. You know and I know everything changes between now and January.
Go Niners
Yeah. And your last minute interception. What kind of icing did you put on the cake with that throw? Shawn who? I've been calling for anyone but you and that other loser.
Believe it when I see it!
Right now it comes down to that smith gives us the best chance to win with his mobility. Hill has the defense in his head. Hey Oregon niner where u from? I'm from Medford
Aes it's winning that counts. You can snub the int all you want. Doesn't change the fact he didn't finish the job. Smith lovers already making excuses for his faults. I've seen real qbs eat up the the defense he saw. The three Tds were impresive, but they were the same play. Try that againts the colts and see what happens. He's not going to do it again on that play. Oh by the way. Hill did the same thing with vd on the same play in the Vikings game. Coming in at halftime when the other team isn't prepared isn't that great to me. When he does it againts a team that's prepared then I'll be impressed. I will say he looked crisp. But this guy has fooled me before. If wrong about him. Then it's a good situation anyways. Niners win I'm happy. I'm tired of root root rooting for failures. And to this point that's just what he is. I don't think he's the answer. Like I said if I'm wrong. I still win.
I would expect most smith haters to have changed their tag by now. That woould explain all of the new tags, but not the top_cats and such.
I give ninermd credit for still voicing his opinion. Way to keep up the good fight, hill would be happy.
It is amazing how the whole team became better with alex as qb. The defense got some rest, and had something to fight for again. This game was getting away fast and sing made the change.
Alex had more time to throw? Do we really think that simms made the whole line better? No, the line became better when the defense realized they had to defend the whole field, not just 10 yards past the line of scrimmage. When you can throw the ball, you spread the defense, sounds simple.
You will also notice that they ran more vertical plays when alex was in. This offense was made for alex.
After the atlanta game alex ran the offense in practice (giving shaun some rest?) and he stayed behind to throw the ball to crabs?
Like I said last week, sing was ready to make the switch regardless of what he said to the media.
Well, I truly believed Alex was a bust. I'm not going to say I'm 100% behind him, but he did play much better in the second half than Shaun did in the first. Well done, even in a loss. I can't even hold him responsible for the last pass int. You gotta do what you gotta do. If he keeps rolling, I'll be behind him all the way.
Shaun Hill can't help it because he does not have the strength to navigate this offense. We won't be hitting anyone in the mouth with our ) line anytime soon. Alex will need a fine shoe deal cuz he's gonna be running for his life every week. Sing has ran out of speeches for the O line. There is nothing left to tell them.
The answer is to change the offense philosophy and put the ball in the air. We'll have to get Gore involved with screens and draws. We are simply the worst running team in the league right now.
I thought Hill could handle the job. The hits and constant pressure have given him happy feet. Unfortunately, he's done. That is the truth. He looked like a beaten man on the sideline today.
One of the best O lines in the NFL by the end of the year? That fabrication can't even fool the O line itself sing.
OMG, that is the same message you shared with Damon Bruce during the post-game show... too funny. I do not remember how receptive he was to your opinions.
While I agree with some of the things you say, I do not agree that Singletary is over his head. You must admit that Raye (whom I have no confidence in) opened the playbook at the half.
If Smith can play like he played today, then we may be alright. Regardless, the 9ers are not a play-off caliber team this year. Seemingly improved, but not a Super Bowl contender, based upon the first 6 games.
TC, again, not that I wholly disagree with you, but it is just 6 games and ELEVATED expectations are not realistic at this point- lets see where we are at the end of the year. You may be overreacting.
Alex threw behind the same bad line and came up with 3 td's and 16 completions. Being able to throw the ball made the o-line play like it should. It is not a great line, but it will be just fine with alex as qb. Alex didn't seem like he was running from his life behind that line. He forced the defense to defend the pass and made the o-lines job easier.
Aaron, I am from Dallas, OR. just west of Salem.
All this talk about Smith coming in at halftime and the Texans not having game planned for him... Let us not forget Smith hasn't been practicing with the 1st team (except for the one practice) and didn't have a chance to be in on the game plan for the Texans either. There's two sides to that coin...
Ok smith fans. Where is smith going to take this team? 1 half of football I guess says we are winning the superbowl. Yet none of you want to bring up HE THREW THE INT THAT LOST THE GAME. All he had to do was go 60 yards with 2 mins left. Oh but that's right they were playing prevent, and lord knows NO qb in history has ever came back on that defense. We knew what smith could do.[nothing] but we didn't know about hill. Now we know neither are the answer. I think some of you are so bent on being right. That you don't crap when you see it. You just want to say I told you so. You guys must be new fans. Because when I grew up watching the niners I watched real qbs throwing the ball. You guys must be spoiled from crappy qbs. Now you want to say my crappy qb is better than yours. Ha ha. hill only proved what we knew about smith. They are both crap. So enjoy those 3 td passes and keep ignoring the int that lost the game. But remember you all drank this water before. True colors always come out. And you all be reminded what smith really is.... A bust.
All I'm saying is this was only 1 half for Alex Smith, imagine what he will do in a complete game...2 years of studying and now he's applying what he learned! Please, Please, Please don't mention the rookie QB, (not worth mentioning his name), he will never be the future...
Ninermd, I forget, when did alex become a bust again? The two years he was injured? Give me a break. You are not following what you are preaching.
You want to bring up his int, but not his 3 TD'S.
I have seen a lot of great qb's play for us and the rest of the teams out there and alex looked all the part today. I have seen a lot of come backs and I have seen a lot of let downs by some of the greats.
If shaun didn't leave alex such a big hole, we would have won. You are so stuck on alex being a bust, you will only focus on that 1 bad play out of his very nice comeback.
Exactly!
I really like the changes sing did to the defense in the second half. They held the texans to 3 points. In the first half they had "no rest and no hope". In the second half they had "rest and hope". Now that is great coaching.
Where's ONENINER? I thought he would be all over this post
How can you not blame him for the int? Did my eyes decieve me or did someone else throw the ball? This is what us noner fans have come to? Hoping on Alex smith? Well this one isn't that blind. Sometimes you have to call it like you see it. This isn't the niner org I grew up watching, and hill or smith aren't going to bring it back period. Smith or hill starting + cards win tonight = no playoffs for the niners.
Your an idiot. He practiced with the first team during training camp fool. You don't remember the so called qb competition? Damn some of you niner fans are idiots. Sell your tix to other teams fans like usual.
You might be blind? Just saying. Only see the 1 int and not the 3 td's. I would have them eyes checked out at least.
How can you call someone an idiot for stating facts? You really don't like niner fans, do you.
"Let us not forget Smith hasn't been practicing with the 1st team..."
he didn't say that he NEVER practiced with the first team offense. He stated that he hasn't been.
Dude your comments are no longer valid. And I do agree with you, some of YOU niner fans are idiots. lol.
What has Alex smith done in his career? If you can come up with a halfway decient answer I will shut up. But we all know what the answer is. Don't we? Oh the injuries excuse again. Ok when he was playing again. What did he do that was great? Bent on calling hI'm a bust because he is. Did he win the game today? I must have been in a coma the last five years. Damn I missed the superbowls, probowls, mvps, passing titles, and records that supersmith has earned. Ha like I said this is what the niner fans have come to. Hoping on Alex smith. See you guys in a couple of weeks. Better have all of your excuses ready. Because you know you will need them for your boy.
That one int cost them the game. Crunch time flop. Did he win today? Go back and read some of my posts from earlier. 3 tds on the same route. Not knocking him on those, but throw three of the same passes on a real defense and see if they work. So 3 tds and a game losing int makes Alex smith the best qb in the world now? Can't wait for the excuses to come flying when he flops again. Now answer the ? Did he win today?
Alex Smith threw an interception when the line of scrimmage was at the 40 line with 37 seconds on the clock after a delay of game penalty that wiped out his 5 yard scramble on the previous down, meaning he was rushing to throw 60 yards total without running using up all of the clock, particularly when all the time outs had been burnt before hand, meaning not getting out of bounds could easily end the game.
Tack on the fact that he was throwing into an area blanketed with defenders who were all expecting the pass...
Granted, Smith's no Montana or Young, but 3 touchdowns and an interception, even if the interception was returned for a touchdown (which it wasn't), is a net gain of 2 touchdowns.
Sooooo him practicing with the first string all pre season didn't give him the knowledge about the offense, the timing of his recievers or anything? Well I guess smith is the greatest qb ever. I mean that's pretty impresive not knowing anything about the offense, and coming in there and throwing 3 tds in a loss. And he was practicing with the first string after the falcons game fool. Forgot about that didn't you idiot? Lol your a buster.
Well Alex Smith had a good second half.. Good for him.
I say let him start versus Indy..
They will need a QB to run from Freeney et al.
But how can Sing put Hill back in? Shawn is regressing or so it seems..
But as far as Smith?
It was only one half so let's not start ....each others ....just yet
BUT if he can play like that on a consistant basis.. Good for him..
LOOKS LIKE A GOOD OLD FASHION QB CONTROVERSY..
Wow, you might be the dumbest sack of crap to ever post on this site. What color is the sky in your world? First of all, the pick was a desparation pass on 4th and 10, and he was just a tenth of a second from being sacked because the line couldn't block. If he would have had just a fraction of a second longer, that pass would have likely been on target. But that's neither here nor there. I'll let you focus on that BS while the rest of us focus on how Smith displayed some of the best QB play this team has seen in YEARS. If it weren't for Alex we probably would have lost that game by 30 points.
And nobody is going to get sucked into your pointless bust talk. Anyone with a lick of common football sense, and TRUE 49ers fan that has followed the team, knows that he was set up for failure early in his career. His rookie year the 49ers were the worst team in the league, '06 was promising, '07 he got a severe injury to his shoulder and Nolan threw him under the bus. Those aren't excuses, they are facts. You are obviously clueless about this team and football in general. The kid didn't have a chance.
Now, Alex has matured and improved, has a chance to revive his career, and to help this team get back on track. He's off to a great start so far. If you think he stinks, well thats fine, you're entitled to your opinion. Just do us all a favor and save all your negative, seriously skewed know-it-all BS and maybe say something constructive next time. I know you're probably sitting in mommy's basement right now on the computer, drinking your strawberry milk, reading this and trying to think of a clever response, which I probably won't even read. Take some advice and quit dwelling on the past. You have your opinion, I have mine. Only time will tell. I'll just let the rest of the season do the talking for me. One day we can look back on this and I'll be the one saying "I told you so."
Ha ha ha ha. He practiced with them after the falcons game. YOUR comments are no longer valid.
TeleCat is COMPLETELY correct. I think the story above had it right when it said there was no push back from Raye. Of course there wasn't - THAT'S WHY HE WAS HIRED!! Martz is not easy for some people to work with - Oh, yeah, his teams only move the friggin football up and down the field and score points (and get to two Super Bowls, with every QB he coaches racking up big numbers). But...Jimmy Raye is hired to "establish the running game" and "impose our will on the other team" - Yeah, right. So, I think we might have the worst running game in the league right now and would be the worst offense if the Rams weren't around. Oh, yeah - the Rams and Lions offenses really improved when they fired Martz, didn't they. Ask Bulger if he'd like to play for Martz again.
As for Alex Smith. Can he be a BIG TIME QB? We shall find out in the next few weeks. But remember, "good" isn't good enough. Bill Walsh understood that you need to be among the best to compete with the best, which is why he traded for Steve Young in 1987. Jeff Kemp was a wonderful backup QB and by the way, was more productive in the actual games than Smith or Hill. But of course, he had an ACTUAL offensive coach directing him. With a post 1975 scheme. (Teams relying on the ground game to win haven't won big since the 75 Steelers and they only had maybe THE GREATEST DEFENSE OF ALL TIME). But Walsh would not be satisfied with "good."
At least Vernon Davis looks like a player finally and Crabtree may be very good. If Alex doesn't do it BIG - get rid of the current coaches, hire Mike Shanahan, draft Tim Tebow.
Excuses excuses excuses. You know damn well you'll be reading this clown. So who are you to tell anyone when or what to have an opion on? This is America Jack. Na I'm sitting in my beautiful home while my beautiful is sleeping just enjoying my last day off of work like a 34 year old American is intitled to do. First no one made the excuse for the other crappy qb when he was getting pressured. 4th and 10 is very managable with a good qb. Hell even crappy hill has done that before. Excuses excuses. Oh that's not fair they played prevent on poor Alex. And he couldn't get us in field goal range. Ahhhh that's not fair. Every real fan knows crunchtime is where it counts. And he failed again. All of you smith fans have been on here whining and crying and posting negative comments on here all year. But can't stand it when someone disagrees. Lol I am a real fan. But I know crap when I see it. And yes we will see when it's all said and done. Because I can't wait to hear the excuses excuses excuses when he shows he is still a bust.
Ha. This guy accusing someone of living in their moms basement. With the cookie monster as a picture. Lol
CHIMPY??? Dude wtf?? Classless...
If Schaub and Houston rolled up 21 first half points I look for the COLTS to roll up about 35 by half and cruise to a 45-17 victory..
Colts are the best team in the NFL..
Good to see Smith have a nice 2nd half.. Duke Davis played with passion.. Crab shack did about wehat i thought..
Crabman will be JUST fine..
WORRY??? ABOUT HILL OR SMITH??? LOLROTFLMAO.. YEA.. They must be quaking, shaking in their cleats..
As long as Gonzalez, Wayne, Clark, Addai and Oh yea Peyton Manning are healthy I doubt the best team in the NFL are worried about any other QB..
IF Houston jumped out 21-0 and let off the gas and still won then look for Indy to NOT let up and put half a hundred on the board and go home..
The 49ers will NOT stop the Colts. This could be ugly..
more mindless smith bashing.....hmm eli throws interception late in his game to allow arizona's win....
but if you read the game blog i too am nervous about smith although happy he gets his chance again.....nervous mostly because he hasn't played in two years and now with this performance the expectations sore.....
but after all this is a team sport and it takes a team to win....
i just believe smith could be just as good a game manager as any QB if that is what sing wants.....but i have to admit, as i did in the game blog, what was going on with the game management at the end of that game...smith not signaling time out....or sing not calling time out....what really happened in those sequences....i need answers to those matt.....
but smith is more than a game manager IMO probably every bit as good as other above average QB's like romo, or even eli or ben.....smith now has to be given game time to develop.....and these next 5 games will be smith's development ramp with an OL that is totally unsettled.
sing needs to get the niners through the indy game without the team's spirit getting broken so much that lowly titans bites them in the butt for their first win. Then a chicago team that maybe the equal of the niners and at a GB team that is probably better than niners probably to be billed as smith vs rodgers. then jags before getting back to in division games. Tenn, Chi, Jags are at home and that is a good thing...but the pressure builds as these are pretty much must wins.....and wins are accomplished as a team. Will smith be a contributor these home games and can he help with upsetting of GB.
with weapons like VD, crabtree and gore with ancillary contributions from morgan and, preferably, jones/hill i as a fan, because of the moral victory the 2nd half provided, feel a bit rejuvenated and look forward to the next 5 what are only games.....just to see if the niners can take down the NFC west teams for a season sweep.
Will smith ressurect his potential from the ashes that is his career to date? Maybe, maybe not.....let's see how opposing team's defenses scheme against him in a raye's offense. It will be interesting to watch how smith develops his field generalship...it clearly has to be way better than what transpired the last couple of plays before his interception. But that will take time and my expectation isn't that it will happen immediately.
I just believe this is when smith should have been introduced action...... he has 2 1/4 years of game experience with one of those years on a horrendous team and then 2 years on the surgical table with a broken throwing shoulder because of the all the hits he took as a result of the OL (and holding the ball too long). I am nervous because can smith protect his shoulder when being sacked.....i am holding my breath when he gets driven into the ground on a sack....how strong is that shoulder?
Whatever. Smith looked better than Hill, bottom line. I have supported Hill all along. But he has looked bad, and the offense has looked TERRIBLE. Smith provided a spark. They need to do something to get their ANEMIC offense going. For the first time ALL SEASON, their passing game looked good.
If Smith comes out and sucks again, I would still say that this is the right move. Doing nothing and sucking, wrong move.
Your right. Didn't we all say hill looked good in Minnesota? The td passes, no to's a late surge. I'm not making this a smith vs hill debate. I'm saying we saw what smith was capable of before. It was needed to see what hill could do for a season. Well we found that out now. He's not the answer either. If you guys think I'm some hill fan you are all smoking. I had smiths back for years and he lost out to hill and osullivan. He has been a bust. Until he proves me wrong I will not be on his bandwagon again. I don't hate the kid. He seems like a good kid. But I'm a niner fan first. And like sing says" I want winners"
I guess being 20 years old without watching a mature QB for 2 years doesn't count. Having limited weapons on offense in 2005 and 2006 doesn't count. Being hurt twice and not supported by your HC doesn't count. Rushing back hurt and playing doesn't matter. Smith didn't have a great QB coach/mentor, I guess that doesn't count.
Smith can be a good QB - needs a beefed up line and a different philosophy on offense - do I hear spread offense? The running will open up if they start producing with passing.
Give Smith a break and support him - we did Hill.
"4th and 10 is very managable with a good qb"
Ok... that comment must rank among one of the most idiotic comments EVER on this website.
You must have really been on a roll last night, high balling it with gin & juice, big man.
Nice game for Smith... hope is alive... but let's not get too outrageous. Afraid 9ers will be bludgeoned this weekend at Indy. Smith could throw 4 INT's (and I dont blame him at all for the last pick vs. Texans, great half of QB). Hill could throw 19 for 28 for 58 yards passing (pathetic) and gain only 3 first downs all game. I am afraid we cannot win with either and another expensive, early round QB may have to be the solution. I am not giving up on Smith when I write this, just sayin' he cannot be counted on to be the future simply based upon yesterday's performance.
Would love a surprise, but setting my expectations to that level.
WHOA!!!!
So much effing negativity, here. Soem of you guys sound like Raider fans.
Listening to Ted Robinson on KNBR talk about Crabtree with "Wait Hands" meaning he can wait til the last possible second and snag the ball, stop on a dime, turn, extend himself and get a first down. He's a player.
Robinson said and agreed with Alex Smith as he said after the game he didn't believe Shawn Hill was the problem and he wasn't. OUR PROBLEM IS OUR PI$$ POOR O-LINE.
I can't say enough bad things about Chilo. Spare me on the sophmore slump BS. He just plain sucks.
Robinson says that the switch came at the right time because Crabs played in a spread O in college, as did AS.
Sure the Texans didn't gameplan for AS and they were playing back with a 21-0 lead but even when they tried to do something about it, Smith evaded the rush with his legs.
I'm not sold on Smith yet but I'm a 49er fan not a AS or Hill fan. I want the guy that gives us the best chance and right now that seems to be him.
THE PROBLEM: If this team still continues to operate under the perception that we're a "ball-control, grind-it-out" offense will get us NOWHERE.
We lead the league in 3-&-outs and punts, among other dismal offensive categories. The only way we achieve anything with this philosophy is at snails-pace.
Raye spread receivers out and it worked because we had no other choice. It's nice that he adapted but what about the philosophy now because we are so unequipped to run Gore? Any team can not only see it coming but stop it and add to our 3-&-out total.
Though I don't see the Colts laying half a c-note on us, I will say that running a spread on the Colts may be a better way to go. Go Niners!
"Your an idiot. He practiced with the first team during training camp fool. You don't remember the so called qb competition? Damn some of you niner fans are idiots. Sell your tix to other teams fans like usual."
I'm not one to be the grammar police, but if you're going to call someone an idiot, do yourself a favor and make sure you at least have your grammar correct in that 3 (should have been 4) word sentence.
And by the way... He participated with the 1st team for ONE practice before the bye week and the game plan was put in... Hence why I said "(except for that one practice)." All I was doing was pointing out the other side to what seems to be your main point. I'm all for this team winning and I want to have the great QB play we've had in the past, but give the guy some credit when he's earned it.
Last minute INT.. Oh, ya that totally cost us the game..
YOU ARE A FOOL.... Who even put the nineres in position to win? Certainly wasn't Shaun NOODLE-ARM Hill. You just want to hate on Smith, and that's fine. However, that really mnakes me question your Fan status with this team. Fools like you should really just GTF off this blog!!
It's funny, cuz I knew that after everything Smith did yesterday that some how some way all the Smith haters would only point to the INT. Some of you people make me sick.
Look chick. 4th and 10 isn't managable? I've seen real qbs do it all the time. Stick to cooking and cleaning. Your a fool. Next!
Thank you sir!!!
I agree with the Niner fan idiots, sometimes it's embarassing reading this blog.. Half of you don't even know wtf you're talking about. Or maybe you do, buyt just want to keep bashing Alex Smith, when all he has done is be a team guy, and battle through constant adversity.. Can't accuse him for lack of character. Can't accuse him for lack of physical tools.
And you can't blame a 22 yr old coming in to a bad situation then getting hurt and missing two years. He only gets better from here onm out, and all you Smith haters better suck it up and get on board or find a new blog to CRY on.
You are a fool, dude!!! Show some class, and respect.
Ninermd, you're not a fan you're a fraud.
First of all nerd. My grammar is fine. I am replying to about 10 people on an iPhone. So excuse me if I don't go back to correct mispells or missed periods. Try typing on one of these. You nerd. No one has answered my ?. what has smith done in his career that's made him so great in your eyes. Save the excuses like the coach the injuries, wasn't treated fairly. I will not be on his wagon till he proves me wrong. Until then h or hill are not the answer. Those excuses you all make for him. Doesn't hide the fact that he can't hit the ground with a throw. Granted he looked crisp yesterday. But that was a half, and one play three straight times for those tds. I'm just not going to name him the next Montana from 1 half of football like most of you dreamers. I felt that way about him a couple of years ago. So now he has to prove me wrong. If he does and the niners are winning then great I'm happy anyways. Let the guy play the season out before you annoint him the savior of the franchise. So instead of practicing your big brain on grammar. Study football and come back when you see a real qb do his thing. Got some for you to watch. Ready? A guy named manning, favre, brees, Warner, and he'll let's say Rogers. Now watch those guys convert on a 4th and 10. I've seen them do it. And since smith in your minds is one of the elite in the league. Surely you will see the similar qualities he has with these qbs. Right? Get back to me when you see how Alex compares. Sf 49ers for life suckas.
Who the he'll cares if you question if someones a fan. Who are you? The niner fan police? I'm not a hill fan. But I do recall a bunch of you hypocrites on here bashing hill. Everyday! Your on here praising a guy who didn't finish the game. With a great chance to do so. Excuse me if I'm not happy about a loss from a guy who has never proven crap! I guess I'm not on of the NEW niner fans that root for losing football. Put down the obama hope and change beliefs. I gave up hope on this guy awhile ago. I am a real fan. You are a real dreamer. What has smith done in his career when he was healthy? No excuses! What? You have no answer. Right oneniner? Change your name all you want, but it was you and some of these other idiots on here bashing hill. I never called you fake fans about your opinions. I just called you dreamers. So answer my ?. Clown!
I agree. It is the right move. But if you want to call him the savior. Like all these other smith lovers. Then your a dreamer to. List of frauds the past 4 years..... Osullivan, smith, dilfer, hill. Those qbs are what I'm sick of. This niner fan is tired of watching them lose. Because of names like these. that's my only point. Smith should finish out the year. But i'm not going to say he is our future..... Again. If he proves me wrong like young did with all of his doubters following Montana. Then great for him and great for us. But he has to earn loyalty again.
Nice... you think 4th and 10 is manageable... show me the stats that show how successful NFL QB's are in that sitatuion... I dare say you'll find your statement is foolish
stick to drinkin' your kool-aid and male chauvinistic comments/attitude... you're only hurting your own credibility with each idiotic statement that you write.
Oh and a smith. Your a smith fan. Not a niner fan. I care where this team is headed. You care where smith is headed. So when and if the niners cut him. I'm sure you will be following him right? Because no real forty niner fan would bash a crappy player right? Like Shawn hill. You aren't a niner fan. You just want to be able to say I told you so. Your a joke!

This response clearly shows your suffering from a bi-polar personality or other mental illness... so your ok with Smith finishing out the season, but you bash anyone else who may feel he is the best option on the team... and you think he should have converted that 4th and 10 opportunity.
See a Doctor and get some meds
This comment eveidences you are sufferrring from a bipolar disorder or some other mental condition... "it is the right move" but you BASH others who have the perspective he is the best option on the team now. A. Smith is no savior, but he is a class act. He has a helluva lot more going for him (in his early 20's) than you do at 34. Pity poor fool, ninermd.
See a doctor and get some meds. Your embarrassing yourself.
Ahhh that's so cute. Watch football once in awhile. I know you haven't seen any of our crappy qbs throw a first down on 4th and 10 in quit awhile. But believe me sweety. 4 and 10 for a real qb is very managable. Nice try though.
Ha ha check out my comments from before. I said he is probably the better option right now. Not in the long term. Like all the smith lovers think. Maybe you should read before you comment. Hun.
I won't even get in to it with you, since you clearly have no clue... I am a Niner fan, and it's in the Niners best interest to have this guy succeed. I don't want to look for a QB NEXT YEAR.. DO YOU?? Nate DAvis won't be ready!! We actually looked like an NFL offense and we would never have been in position to win the game had Hill stayed in. How many times have you seen desperation throws picked off at the end of a game when a team is trailing??? A LOT!!!
Ninermd, ur a Smith hater and that's fine! I purposely created my screen name just for you Alex Smith haters. I don't love the guy, but I'm not and haven't been completely sold that he is a bust. And by judging the way he played yesterday, you have to root for this guy. He has never complained, he has never cost us a title, he has never done anything except get thrown in to a MISERABLE team at the age of 21.. What frkn QB would succeed in that situation?? Get over it dude and support the guy until he shows he can't cut it. All I have wanted all along was to give him one last shot being healthy and having decent weapons to throw to. He made huge strides yesterday, and I'm sorry you're to angry to see that.
Let's see you go out on 4th n 10 and complete a pass with 8 defenders... IDIOT
HAHAHAHAHAH LMFAO!!!
Couldn't have written that better myself...
Ninermd you are the epitome of a FORTY-WHINER
Ha ha read earlier comments where I did say he might be the answer right now. Just not long term. Oh and my life is just fine. I know you know me personaly. Yeah that's what he was aiming for. A fat contract and a bust for a career. I think i would prefer my life. After all I reached my goals. Have a great day in the kitchen sweety.
I have an iPhone as well... I wasn't talking about any misplaced periods... But I guess you just don't understand it. I have not said anywhere that I think Alex is the next great thing. I just think the kid played well yesterday... and as he gets slammed when he plays bad... he deserves a little praise when he plays well. All I'm saying is let's see what the kid can do so we know where we need to go in the future.
pretty sure all of us are saying the same thing; however, it would be GREAT for the NINERS if the light finally came on, and he could be what we had all hoped when he was drafted... Then next year we focus on linemen both O and D. Sounds good doesn't it? Or do you just hate the guy that much that you're just done with him? I support my team, and I don't care who the QB is just as long as he can completre a pass to a WR against somebody other than the Rams.
Alex smith. I did support the guy before. I want what's good for my team. Not an individual. Once again. I have no choice but to support him. But I'm not going to say he is the savior. It's funny I've never seen some of the names on here before. Because all season the smith lovers were on here bashing hill. Did you guys say they weren't fans? To me they are both garbage. But I guess it's just not fair to call smith a bust. There are no excuses for throwing low, behind, above and in front of recievers. That's my problem with smith. Those are due to his mechanics and skill. Not a bad coach not a bad team or his age and knowledge. Those are facts. We can argue opinions all day. But you can't argue those facts. He did look good yesterday. But I want to see it for more than a half. I don't hate the guy. And you can't question his character. But football play is all I care about. I don't know him and never will. Just win. This was hills rookie year. Meaning he has never started a season. And from day 1 he has gotten bashed by the smith fans. I know from what I've seen from smith what he is capable of. No one knew what hill could do. Smith was beaten out by him and osullivan. And I will believe what a real o- cord has to say. And it was smith just doesn't have it. More than 1 person in the media, or scout, or coach has said the same thing. Everyone is taking this so personal. We are just fans with opinions. Stop taking it to heart. And how do you know Davis isn't ready? I don't want another qb in the draft. They need to bulk up that o-line. That is my nber 1 problem with this team right now. There is going to be another qb competition next year, and Davis should be in it. He may or may not be ready. We will see. And if anyone on here has anything negative to say about smith then I guess your a fake fan. But you can bash any other part of this team and your o.k then. I'm done arguing opinions. It's pointless. So maybe I'll see some niner fans at the three games I go to a year. Good or bad I pay for my tix every year. Oh and I go to three a year because I live in sac. So squash any hatin there. If smith can prove me wrong then more power to him. But I'll believe it when I see it. And if hill still gets the start. I will feel the same way about him.
well said.. My biggest gripe was that everybody was putting Shaun Hills play on the O-line, but never once did they do that with Alex Smith. Before he got hurt in 07 the Wr's DROPPED 10% of his passes. Mike Nolan through this kid under the bus, and as far as I'm concerened he (Nolan) is the biggest fraud of em all. I never bashed Shaun Hill, but the past few games it was apparent that he would not take this team anywhere with out a great defense, which is something we do not have. However, watching him throw a football is, well, awful. All I have wanted was Smith to get a shot and see if he has made any improvements and slowed things down. If he had not then I would be the first to say, GET OUT...SEE YA!! Now, just like you I want to see him do it again!! Keep our defense off the field!! Smith still has a way to go, but it looks like he is on the right track.
You know he is motivated and has a lot to prove!! I'm confident he can do it. He is a smart guy, and I'm sure has absorbed a lot in the past two years..
GO NINERS
I can go out and hit a reciever in stride 10 yards down the field. Smith can't. Manning, brees, Warner, Rogers, farve, and Ryan. Make those plays in crunch time. Why can't smith. Oh and watch that play again. Gore was open in the flat waiving his arms for the ball. But smith decided to throw into triple coverage you guys complained about. 20 yards down the field. When only needed ten. Hmmmm I'll give him credit for 3 tds and I'll give him credit for the int that ended the game. Can you guys? You think he wanted a moral victory? No he wanted a victory. He said it himself. He couldn't finish. Alex would tell you himself he was trying to win the game. He doesn't want a moral victory. They rushed three and he passes on gore for a pass in triple coverage. Any excuses for that.

"I can go out and hit a receiver in stride 10 yards down the field"
Nut up or shut up (props to Woody H)... maybe we can see you out there against the Titans! beginning to WANT to see you behind our O-Line
Get back in the kitchen! I'm done with you sweety!
I'm sorry did you expect perfection in his firs LIVE game in two years?? I saw him hit plenty of WR's in stride and it looks like he finally has leanred how to let go before the WR gets out of his break.
See, that's the problem with some of you clowns. You expect perfection, and the back-up QB is always the answer.. Why don't you focus on the penalties, and muffed punts vs one bad throw.. Dump-offs weren't going to get the ball downfield. Give the guy a fraking break, already and focus on some bigger issues that are hurting this team.
This is the best supporting-cast Alex smith has had since he was drafted... Now man-up and hope he can make it happen. Doesn't do any of us any good to keep being negative and LOOKING for reasons to say "I told you so" its tiring.
That's the best reply yet. But that's where we differ. I can't hope anymore for him. I am out of that. I just want to see results. And if he can give them now. Good for him and good for the team and fans. Good to read an emotionless smith comment. Don't take it personal smith fans. Most niner fans I know feel the same way I do about him. 3 chances are plenty. This is definetly his last chance. Prove your not what I've seen before and I will role with you. Until then I will have my doubts. Imagine if he started in Philly or new york. He would have gotten one chance to take his job. Not 3. I hope I'm wrong for the benefit of the franchise. We will see.
3 chances? the guy took a 2-14 team to 7-9 with NO WR's... Brian Gilmore? Ashley Lelie? Brandon Lloyd?? He was turning the corner until he was body slammed by Rocky Bernard.. We all saw him try and come back grimmicing after EVERY throw.
very young, new coordinators every year and a bad bad team... It's not like he great talent around and just failed... He's young he's hungry and lets give him ONE MORE SHOT! if not, then YES he is a bust.
I appreciate the passion, just have faith!!
Smith ran the spread at Utah to perfection. Crabtree was in a wide open O at Texas Tech. Smith and Crab could really do some things on a long term basis. How can Coach Sing NOT play Smith? They seemed to react to him 2nd half.
ESPN is reporting that Smith will start.
