Quarterback Alex Smith did not have much time to peruse the game film from the 49ers' game Sunday against the Titans because there's a game coming up three days earlier in the week than usual.

Smith joined me for a podcast today before the 49ers hit the practice field for one of their two practices to get ready for the Chicago Bears on Thursday.

* * *

Earlier in his group meeting with reporters, I asked Smith about locking onto a receiver with his eyes, and whether that was an issue with the interceptions. He said on the first interception, the tipped pass to Michael Crabtree, he should've gotten rid of the ball sooner.

"The one on the boundary could have gone up," Smith said. "That half-second maybe allowed that safety to come over and make a play that allowed that ball to stay in-bounds. The other two didn't feel like I was late at all. But the first one I could say, critically looking at it, I could have gone up quicker."

* * *

While I was speaking with Alex Smith and punter Andy (for a podcast I'll post tomorrow), tight end Vernon Davis had some not-so-complimentary things to say about the Bears' defense to reporters in the locker room.

"I think we can destroy their front," Davis said. "The guys up front, I think we can destroy them. I don't see anything spectacular about their front line. Their linebackers, I think we can handle them pretty well."

* * *

Offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye said Jason Hill entered the game against the Titans after Isaac Bruce rolled his ankle. Hill caught two touchdown passes.

"He has been practicing well since his hamstring injury and making progress. That coupled with the fact that [WR] Isaac [Bruce] had a tender ankle and ran a seven route over on the left boundary and rolled his ankle, tweaked it a little bit. So, we were down in numbers in the three-wide package and Jason was the next guy up. We were fortunate that we had him up for the game because he was the guy who had gotten the work as all three backups going into the game. It turned out that he was able to play and he made some plays for us."

Raye said he does not know how the 49ers will split playing time at the receiver spots going forward.

"We'll see where he (Bruce) is, where his foot is or his injury is," Raye said. "And then we'll make a decision going forward."

I hope this talk about Bruce playing is just posturing for the Bears. I hope to have seen the last of him on the field for the 9ers. The future is now and we can't play guys from the past. Get the young WR's on the field so that McGM knows what they have (Morgan, Hill, and Jones need to establish their roles... Crabs is locked in as a starter

I agree completely. Bruce is a HOF player but he hasn't has a score in 8 games. What does Hill have to do to prove he should be on the field?!? All he does is make plays when he's on the field

VD has been quiet all year so maybe he's trying to spice things up.

Really, Vernon? 3-5 and you haven't destroyed anybody up-front. In a must-win game do you really need to give Chicago added incentives?? Well, at least his game is finally doing the talking also.. Now, please go out and back it up!

Let's throw deep 1st play of game Raye!!! Go Niners!

Great. I thought Vernon is a changed man. We trash talk Bears after losing 4 games in a row and last two home games.

What a crap.

"Great. I thought Vernon is a changed man."

So I guess his 7 TD's don't count for anything??? He didn't say they sucked... he said he thinks they can blow them out. Maybe he's giving the O-Line some props to go out and smash em up

I thought he has matured, but obviously he still needs to grow. Vernon Davis has just done the Bears coaching staff a favor by motivating their OL for the game. What's stupid thing to say when his team came off a 4 games losing streak and in danger of being eliminated from playoff.

I'm way down with that plan: lets throw deep first play. If nothing else, it'll require the defense to play the whole field, and hopefully open up some holes for our run and intermediate passing games. Lets take advantage of Alex's strength and throw deep! To Crabtree!

Maybe it's just the kind of thing the 49ers need to do. Get excited for once. Quit being so nice and develop that killer instinct.

But don't tell me.

Show me.

Come on Smith! I've wanted you on the bench all year so start proving me wrong!

GO NINERS!

Let's throw deep to ANYONE!!! Moran Norris, I don't care....yes, stretch the darn field or the short to intermediate passes will be blown-up!

Great VD, way to give the Bears some motivation. I would love to see the niners dominate the trenches and blow them up, but don't tell me, show me! Looking forward to Thursday. Also, Jason Hill deserves some more playing time and Brandon Jones needs to work on his punt return skills and what a fair catch is.

I'm betting we return to Jimmy Raye's martyball. Get ready for a long boring game. No turnovers but we lose again.

Vernon...why...*smh*

I wonder if Alex (pogo stick) Smith will have a good game? He's usually up one game and down the next like a human pogo stick! Sometimes he's down 2 or 3 and up one! Maybe Pogo can get it together since it might be the time for the stick to go up!
I hope!

My first reaction is, nice one Vernon (sarcastically). But if you really look at it, nothing we have been doing has been working anyway, so why the heck not. Better back it up boys.

And I also hope this is posturing by Raye (who just may be the Master Posturer). Less Bruce, more Hill.

Go Niners!

Vernon has definately been putting up the stats, so maybe it's not such a bad thing if he cuts lose a little bit. At least it'll keep the Niner O-Line busy.

Your avitar is making me reeeeal thirsty, btw.

Couldn't agree more Alex. I mean c'mon VD ...what the hell is wrong with you? Your team is 3-5...have lost 4 games in a row...2 at home by the way & you start spewing mierda out your pie hole? As for Benny Blanco's take? Hey if the O-line needs to get fired up to get ready for the Bears by VD's spewing then they need to find a new line of work.

I was amazed at all the blames that were put on Alex Smith. I thought he played pretty good, and he showed that he could improve to become something good.

Having said that, I am glad people are putting all the blames on Alex Smith. At some point, any QB will have all the blames put on him. I want to see how Alex handles this. If he rattles and becomes self-conscious, then he can't succeed here. If he just ignores the criticism and plays his game, he'll be very good pretty soon. We'll find out.

I'm confident Vernon can back up his talk, but he needs to play with a level-head. Also, when your team lacks the killer-instinct, you have no business talking about blowing up anyone! Niners have lost 4 games by a combined 17 points. Not what I expected from a Mike Singletary coached football team. Competing isn't good enough anymore, or it's just going to be season of "what ifs?"

Terry, it's a pretty short stick considering it's been 2 1/2 games. Why don't you have some faith, man? 6 tds 5 Ints (3 defelcted) and he's looked better than most of us have expected. Not only because he's, well, Alex Smith, but becuase he hadn't played a game in 2 years. I've seen more life in this offense in 2 1/2 games with Smith than I did in the previous games with the exception of some nice plays to Vernon Davis and runs by Frank Gore. Get over it, he's the starter so I'm supporting him until he's benched or gone. You and all the other Smith haters should do the same. He gives us the best chance to win and gives Frank Gore more success both rushing and receiving.

We need to keep it short. More screens to Gore. Man can he make you miss in the open field! Some quick slants to Crabtree and Davis to let them get some YAC! GOT YAC? We need some! I almost YAC on Sunday's! Let's cut Bruce loose! I think we have a nice trio with Crabs, Morgan and Hill. Smith still makes me nervous. I think he is improved. It has to be tough to always learn a new offense. HEY MATT! I never ask you questions so answer this! Please. What do you think our O Coordinator position will look like next year? I know it's early but if we're ever going to have any type of continuity, especially at O line, we need the same O coordinator year after year.

Montana is RICH! $49 Million Dollar Ranch! He didn't make extraordinary amounts of money in football and endorsements. Must be Joe Cool in investments as well!

I'm sure the offensive line appreciates the added incentive Davis gave to the bears defensive line. Alex should tell Davis to cool it. Alex is the recipient of Davis's bold statements. On Alex, I remember in his early years with the 9ers he would appear to purposely throw over his receivers heads for fear of being intercepted again. So, I'll be watching to see if he is still gun shy and over throwing his receivers. I guess a good running game would calm his nerves as well. So many 9er injuries. I guess letting that running back get snatched off of the practice squad didn't work out after all. Seemed at the time like the 9ers were limiting their running attack by letting him go. And the 9ers have said they want to be a running attack team.

6 tds 5 Ints (3 defelcted) Deflected because of bad throwing. And 1 td was in garbage time. Come on keep it real bro.

Football has unwritten rules of conduct (much like baseball) and badmouthing the team you are about to play is a transgression thereof. It is tantamount to aiding and abetting the enemy,I would be very surprised if Mr Davis isn't upbraided by Coach Singletary behind closed doors.

I keep hearing people say Y'all keep saying "take away those turnovers and it's different."

Well DUH. But you can't take away the turnovers and more to the point, you can't expect any fewer turnovers from this team this season.

Hill's not the answer, he's been exposed. Smith has been exposed since his first season and contrary to the Smith slurpers on this NG, he is NO BETTER than 2006 and maybe a lot worse.

If Sing really wanted winners, he'd have recused himself as head coach because clearly he is a loser. Great speeches, death stares and dropping your pants will only take you so far. The 49ers don't appear to have ANY Xs and Os guys.. Without a real scheme and a real clue, all Dumb and Dumber are going to get you are more blowout losses, to lousy teams.

The way the 49ers are playing, every game left on the schedule is at least in question and all
but two of them are just about sure losses.

If nothing else, losing out will give them incredible draft positioning and a reason to fire every coach except Rathman and start over. Back whatever truckload of money is necessary to get Mike Shanahan coaching the team and get some kind of real GM, and let McLoser go as well.

I think a good draft and careful choices in free agency could get this team close to competitive if they have a coach with a clue. Dumb and dumber don't have them.

I'm not a Smith hater. NEVER was! Oneniner drives people to make arguments because the guys comments are so off the wall!
And if your showing me stats of Alex's that show 6 TD's and 5 INT's as proof that Alex has "it," then I must be confused with the stats that make QB's good to even fair!?
I wish Alex all the luck in the world! He's been damaged beyond repair by Nolan! He also was a #1 draft pick that didn't deserve to be #1 and was poorly scouted by the team scouts and front office! He needs a change of venue! He does unless he makes a miracle comeback from what he has consistently shown!
What do you think? I want to see Hill put back in? No way! The move by Singletary to move Alex to #1 QB has ended that possibility! And Singletary would have chaos on his hands if he put Hill back in unless an injury takes place!
Hill did win 3 games! And Alex...well...no need to go there! And one of his losses was to a 1 and 6 team.
By the way! Your so called 3 "deflected" INT's came because the db on the receiver thrown too was right there or near enough to cause the INT's. Besides! Until the NFL changes the way they make stats for the QB, deflected is STILL AN INT! Instead of blaming the receiver, maybe I can say Alex caused it himself because he just doesn't have the touch with the ball!
So there it goes! That's my take! And I'm stickin' to it!

Matt,
hey i requested a smitty interview you went out and got a homerun! thank you for doing that! i know you prob didnt even see my request but i figured i would thank you. tell smitty that there are fans that wear his jersey every week supporting him!! i have a feeling he is going to play good cuz he has on previous thursday night games ie the game in seattle. thanks again matt.

Smith needs to get a real shot. This season it's not as important to limp into the playoffs just to get killed in the first round, as it is to see if Smith is the future, or if Nate Davis might be. I'd give Smith a couple more games to be better/ more consistent and then ,if he's not, give Davis a few games to see what he has. This team has many needs (O-line, pass rusher, running back, safety, etc.) in next year's draft, and it would be great not to have to use up picks on more rookie QBs. On the other hand, if the 49ers aren't sure of what they have at QB, they have to go after a QB in the first round.
When you watch other, good teams play it's obvious that the 49ers need at least a few more impact players, and superior offensive coaching than they have now. This is the time to build and not worry about short term wins and the playoffs.

This past Sunday the Cardinals scored on their first six possessions against the Bears. Two weeks ago the Bengals scored on their first seven possessions against the Bears.

If the Niners playing at home, in desperation mode, can't put some points on the board this Thursday night they really do have serious problems.

And yet another thread gets hijacked by quarterback quashes.

Alex is simply not a performer under pressure. He can't bring this team from behind, period. His throws have been too high to any and everyone since day one. Decent quarterbacks just don't miss the easy throws like simple screens and swing passes. Alex can miss any throw at any time. Not keeping the ball down when throwing across he middle is a BIG mistake. Alex Smith can't perform under pressure.

Shaun Hill's arm is truly horrible. He has happy feet right now and he has very little mobility. He can't make the throws that will allow us to open up the offense, and get the defense out of the box.

Basicly, we have absolutely no quarterback whatsoever. If we could fuse Hill and Smith together, bingo.

No, Nate Davis is not reday to lead this team. I don't want to see a rookie quarterback playing behind this offensive line. They will get him killed or destroy his confidence by taking a ton of hits.

The front office knew we didn't have a quarterback when last season ended. That's why Kurt Warner was flown down here to tease us and make our front office look stupid! I don't want us to draft a rookie quarterback. Also, the answer is not out there in free agancy. I think Nate will and can handle this QB job next year. We need to trade down and get help on both sides of the line, PERIOD!!!

Hey Terry, how would you explain your boy Rodgers stats against the Bucs on Sunday. They were almost identical to Smith's only against a WINLESS team? What's up with that??? I need another one of your expert opinions. Give me the football truth according to Terry! LOL!!!!

I LOVE Duke Davis. BUT WTF is he getting the BEARS' linemen all fired up for? The 49ers O Line isn't exactly the 1992 Dallas Cowboys.. Love the passion but call out the DB's who cover you and NOT the 300 LB monsters who want to KILL your QB.
On an upside to the short week MAYBE the team won't dwell on the loss.
Love the 49ers favored by 3. That should pull the Chicago money in..
With NO DB's and very little pass rush watch for Cutler..

QUESTION 4 U?? Are you a fan of the Cowboys? Super Bowl 6 was Dallas winning.. Just wondering.

"Raye said he does not know how the 49ers will split playing time at the receiver spots going forward".

Let's see JR, Hill's added speed and the fact he had 2 TD catches in one game, twice as many as all wide receivers in the previous 7 games should give you a pretty good idea. It's already been said: it's all about putting the players on the field who give you the best chance to win!!!
Morgan hasn't exactly been stellar lately either so use B.Jones more and utilize his speed too so they can't double team Crabtree as much. Bruce and Morgan are no.3 receivers at best right now, they're not making any DCs or DBs lose any sleep.

J.Hill and/or Jones with Crabtree and VD plus Gore, something for defenses to really be concerned about.

Rich Gannon commented during game on CBS:

"5 Offensive Coordinators in 5 years is insane...lucky he (Smith) can remember the snap count".

Smith will be fine. 9ers win this Thursday with a controlled power run game plan. Smith will throw for 2 td's and he will play well the rest of the year.

I can. The packers have the worst o-line in the game. 1 bad game is exceptable for a good qb. Manning had a bad day againts our d. Do you want to compare him with Smith? 110 passer rating for Rogers with again THE worst o- line in the league. Slow down al. We know your a smith lover and that's ok. But you can't compare a top qb with a middle of the muck qb. Your talking 1 game. So if smith has a monster day on Thursday. Are you going to compare him with brees? You are stretching a little bud.

If there's any leadership along the o-line whatsoever, they'll pull VD aside and tell him to have a coke and a smile and STFU. I like VD's confidence but his 2 cent brain gets in his way.

wrong-that honor would belong to the redskins

Losing out the rest of the year will indeed be painful, but if it leads to this fraud of a head coach and the moron masquerading as an NFL GM being fired, I am all for it.

I am now convinced the Niners will never be a play-off team as long as McCloughan and Singletary are around.

I only hope Jed does not start listening to the excuses of the Singletary Kool-Aid drinkers and decides to bring Dumb and Dumber back again next year.

Come on Jed, please give Dumb and Dumber the boot. I can't take any more of "I want Winners", and "Don't tell me, Show me" crap.

Rick, don't you get dizzy jumping on and off the bandwagon each and every week? Learn from Terry. He's an old guy with experience in bandwagoning. He jumps on and off quarterly. Saves wear and tear on the knee joints.

Brutal Comments. However I understand it has been six straight losing seasons and until we finished above .500 the fans are rightfully upset.

I believe we are an O Line away from being a playoff team. It is our weakest link. That is Scot McCloughan's responsibility.

Coach & his staff are not the problem.

Please, you should change your blog name to "renineno" because you're just oneniner's flip side. Did you make the determination that Green Bay's O-line was the worst in the NFL? Even if that's true, when O-lines are bad, it only affects the QB behind the worst line?????? I'm sure all those other QBs would be interested in hearing that one! Way to defend your boy. That's warped logic if I've ever heard it.

Really, try being a little more objective in your analysis than that.

Totally agree with your take on what should be the starting WR's Gilroy. Especially with Brandon Jones, the 49ers paid some good money for this FA & HELLO! don't you think it's about time to see what you actaully got with this guy because you can put a fork in Bruce. Bruce has had a heck of career but his body language coming off the field Sunday told me everything I needed to know. It said "I'm Done!"

Alex is in denial. The first pick, not a good decision, but his receiver didn't help him much.

The second pick was ALL Alex. He never looked away from the receiver.

The third pick, again, not the best decision but it should have been a P.I.

Play Alex one more game. If we see some of the same crap, then it's time to look forward. Play Nate Davis. Give him a game. Let's evaluate what we got.

We know Smith and Hill are not the future. Play Nate, see what we have. Draft heavy on the O & D lines. If a good QB is to be had, grab him.

Troy Smith is out there in Baltimore. I'm sure they wouldn't mind unloading his salary. He was going to be the starter over Flacco until he got sick. I think he's worth dealing for. Had he been a Niner from the start of training camp, he would have been the starter at the beginning of the season.

Excactly! Your coming on here asking about how another qb did last week. When your boy Alex is just plain gross. Rogers has a worse line than smith. And is still an elite qb in this league. Of course qbs wants a good line, but Rogers flourishes because of his true talent. Smith does not. O-line excuse..... Is voided! Ha ha ha Rogers vs smith. Lol. And I comment on other things besides smith talk. It's just you ten bowling pins, that were cocky and bagging other fans that don't agree. Have to be knocked down. You all think you know it all. And skeebers. The heat has cooled down a bit. So now you come in throwing jabs? Where were you on Sunday and Monday? And don't use the job excuse,, because we all know most fastfood chains close sometime.

For those of you who are COMPLETELY BLIND about the OTHER thing that's contributed to the 4 game losing streak I'll just throw out some numbers here...

17th in sacks = 18 sacks (avg 2.3 /gm)

23rd in Int. = 6 Int's (that's it?)

23rd in Turnover Ratio = -3

So you CAN'T blame just Alex & the offense for failing the 49ers. Football is a Team Sport that consists for the most part of Offense AND Defense so it's time to expose the defense for what they really are and that is NOT VERY GOOD. The truth hurts!

Ninermd, I'm not into mob psychology and knee-jerk reactions to game day. I leave that to guys like you who treat the thinking process like a foreign language and love to wave negative pom-poms. Filling the air with "So-and-so sucks!" and "Fire everyone and start over because I'm sick of waiting" and trotting out a QB like Rogers and calling him elite when he has a losing record (with the same team Farve went 13-3 with) and doesn't win games in the 4th quarter, and excusing him for bad Oline play while ignoring the Oline play factor here. You know, mindless drivel. Your specialty. Why do you post so much? You never have anything to say and when it's pointed out to you, you start in with the name calling. If you don't like being flogged continually for your miniature intellect, there's a simple solution: quit posting.

Simple, Jason Hill needs to stay healthy. Every time you turn your head he's injured. Brandon Jones needs to be in there.

Just to repeat myself I'm not a Smith lover just not a Smith hater. I'd like to see him succeed because it would leave one less hole to fill on this team.
You'd get more respect on your opinions if you could use ALL the facts and a lot less emotion. Using your mind instead of your mouth might be a novel concept for you but it is worth it in the end. Like I asked before is the md for mentally dysfunctional or mentally deranged. As Jeff Kent once said: relax and enjoy the game!!!

PS: does that picture of Rodgers you keep under your pillow help you sleep at night or is it for your version of "FANTASY" football.

There was a profound tweet on Matt's twit page yesterday – all the great teams always pay compliments to their opponent before the game, then destroy them after.

Shut your pie hole Vernon.

Go back and look at my postings before the season began. I expressed my doubts and misgivings about Singletary and McCloughan way back in March when Singletary Kool-Aide drinkers like you were predicting play-offs. As a loyal Niner fan, I was willing to give Singletary a chance to "Dont tell me Show me". I have seen enough.

Singletary is exactly who I thought he was. A farud. If he is so great why did not have a positive impact on the team during the Nolan years. He was here since day one with Nolan. Assistant head coach if I remember rightly.

Started typing my last entry before I read your post. Well said!!! It's hard to debate with someone when they don't want to hear anything but themselves and get mad when they can't intelligently answer questions about their viewpoint.

Rick, I'm aware of your initial misgivings. In fact, you offered to ditch your season tickets. Then you got on board and were enthusiastic about Singletary and the team. Then you went up and down with each win or loss. Now you give up with half the season still left to play and start insulting the coaches and GM. Tough to take you seriously. Thanks for giving your money to the team, though. At least your wallet is steadfast in its loyalty.

Since I'm on break from flipping burgers, (that's just for you ninermd):

I don't know if Singletary is going to be a good HC or not but I know this team is playing much better now than under Nolan, the "D" deinitely is even without a dominant passrusher. Halfway through the season, 4 of the 5 losses are by a touchdown or less and that's with a missfiring offense and mediocre special teams play. The next 8 games will give us a better indication if he's going to be good or not. I had the same question you had about why he didn't have a bigger impact as an assistant coach and I just don't think Nolan let him or he didn't want to cause any problems in their frienship.

Wow. I am so dismayed that you don't take me seriously. NOT.

Believe me, I wont be losing any sleep because you don't take me seriously. After your pre season play-off predictions, your own credibility is pretty much shot.

This is the second time you have refused to address the issue I have raised about why Singletary did not have a positive impact on the team during the Nolan years, even though he was here with Nolan from day one. Your silence speaks volumes.

Don't put words in my mouth. I was never enthusiastic about Singletary the fraud. I was willing to cheer and support the team, and would have been willing to eat any amount of crow if Singletary had proved me wrong. It does not look like I need to worry about it.

I hope you stay solid in your support of Singletary and McCloughan when Jed finally fires them. Somehow I think you will ditch them and jump on the bandwagon of Shanahan or whoever takes over.

In response to your comment toward Oneniner's post in the previous thread:

Houston ... you are such a friggen ignorant Hillbilly. I swear, I can see your toothless grin now. Go practice your hand- bone instead of making smart-ass homophobic comments toward Oneniners post. Damn.

btw - maybe your buddy Terry can play the spoons while you slap away on your knee

"one less hole to fill" Exactly the point I've been trying to make all along. But no matter how you spin it it's not a valid point. It just makes you a Smith lover..according to MR.MD!!

Cmon dude. Get it straight. I play the banjo.

Nice. -- that was clever. LOL :~)

Now what am I going to do? I kind of like you after that comeback. I don't have anyone else to dislike!
.... oh, wait, I forgot about Terry.

GilroyAl, giving credence to the negative posters is a waste of time. When you post you back it up by factual analysis. They just rant and spew. I remember the Washington Redskins fans wanting Spurrier after Norv Turner and Marty Shottenheimer were replaced. Then they wanted him out of town. Then they threw money at Gibbs to come back but his passion was gone, and now they have Zorn who is running a WCO. Zorn is hanging by a thread. 9ers need some continuity. Say what you want about Singletary, but he is changing depending on the personnel. He wants to win and is doing the necessary changes. For those who want Holmgren, who says he still has the passion? If you want Shanahan, he will want HC/GM title and we will be building for another 3-5 years.

In the words of Drew Bledsoe "just go out there and sling it!"

Rick... you're a Fraud. You're exactly the type of person that Celebrates when times are good and then jumps ship when times are tough. Wah Wah Wah... I love this team and this year may be a builder but I don't cry about it like a kid who just got bullied on the playground.

We lost 4 games in a row... Big F'Ing Deal. The pieces are in place and all we need now is continuity... but obviously that is something your elephant peasized brain can understand.

Dude, give it a rest about Singletary already. The guy is not going anywhere. He will be here next year, at the least. Maybe he is not the answer, but York is not going to pull the trigger anytime soon. So just take a deep breath, relax, and pray to whatever god you do or don't believe in that the team wins some games and entertains us.

Whining just bores everyone.

GilroyAl:

Regarding some of the things that Raye says during the week (like his comment on WR's), I have finally concluded that he is mostly posturing. What he does on Sunday is what counts. Since he is not always doing what he says he's going to do, and he has opened up the O somewhat, I figure there's really no point in paying too much attention to him, other than for entertainment. And this is coming from someone who used to cut him NO slack for the things he uttered.

Those calling for the ouster of York, McCloughan, Singletary, Raye, Smith, et al, bring to mind this quote from Mark Twain: It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.

It often takes time to rebuild a franchise.

Again no response to my question about why Singletary did not have a positive impact during the Nolan years.

Name calling is easy. How about some substance.

"This is the second time you have refused to address the issue I have raised about why Singletary did not have a positive impact on the team during the Nolan years, even though he was here with Nolan from day one. Your silence speaks volumes."

I wasn't aware of you asking me about this issue. Sorry. I would have educated you sooner. Singletary was LB coach, the unit that was the best unit on the team, hands down. That is the only impact an LB coach can make without usurping the power and authority of the HC and also the DC. The fact that you bring up such a stupid question more than once is what speaks volumes, and that you would attempt to attach Nolan's failures to Singletary shows your irrational rant against him lacks any real substance. We are half way through his first full season as HC. Get a grip.

Here's the deal folks. We've got three options.

1.) We blow this whole thing up, yet again and draft a rookie QB of the future.

2.) We hope that Scotty McCantdraft gets fired and the next GM can swing some miracle trade that will land a Matt Schuab type on our roster. That's the only way we're getting a premium QB next year, cause here's your list of 2010 free agent quarterbacks:

Kyle Orton, Denver Broncos (26)
Jason Campbell, Washington Redskins (27)
Chad Pennington, Miami Dolphins (33)
Tarvaris Jackson, Minnesota Vikings (26)
Kellen Clemens, New York Jets (26)
Charlie Batch, Pittsburgh Steelers (34)
Kyle Boller, St. Louis Rams (28)
David Carr, New York Giants (30)
Daunte Culpepper, Detroit Lions (32)
Rex Grossman, Houston Texans (29)
Joey Harrington, New Orleans Saints (30)
Jon Kitna, Dallas Cowboys (36)
Matt Moore, Carolina Panthers (25)
Brett Ratliff, Cleveland Browns (24)
Troy Smith, Baltimore Ravens (25)

3.) We actually let Alex Smith start more than two games for the rest of this season and hope that he can grow with Davis, Gore and Crabtree. Hell maybe if we stick with the same coaches/system for more than half a season Smith will actually be able to learn how to throw to a spot on a route, instead of having learn which receivers are going to get alligator arms or just give up on the route completely.

It's a sad truth to understand, but we actually need Smith to be successful.

Thanks for posting - the list of FA QB's for 2010 is a list that has very little upside. Continuity is key and Smith needs more than 2 games. This team had holes in it from the beginning and if you add injuries it even accentuates the problems further. offense is moving the ball now they just need time to put it all together.

Again with the name calling. What's with you Sing club members. The fact that you apparently cannot have a civilized discussion, and have to resort to name calling only underscores the lack of substance in your arguments.

Get your facts straight. Singletary was not the linebacker coach. He was introduced as the assistant Head Coach when Nolan was hired. I don't think anyone ever knew what his duties were under Nolan.

BTW I will be at the game on Thursday, will you?

"This is the time to build and not worry about short term wins and the playoffs."

Man, I'm sure tired of losing. I say we do both. Win some games and assess the QB's. But then I'm one of those that is tired of Smith, give him a fair shot? I think he's had it, last week was merely more of the same. I don't think S Hill is the long term answer, but he has demonstrated he can win games, I say play him, let's see if we can take the NFC West as it's out only way to get into the PO. And yes, I do expect to get blown out the very first game, but so what? Winning a few more games would be a good thing, giving up on games to test a player further establishes the habit of losing.

OK, I know this is just a rant. I'll stop.

I go for option 3 with a sprinkling possibility of option 1 in terms of drafting a QB. Of course, drafting a QB will depend on Smith for the rest of the season. So far, Smith is failing. Will hope to see that change.

You my friend are an IDIOT

I have 2 words for you.... Patrick Willis. If you for one second don't think Singletary has had a positive impact going back to the Nolan years then I refuse to even debate you anymore.

So what if he was the Assitant HC... Willis has said himself many times how big of an influence Coach Sing has had on him.

"I don't think anyone ever knew what his duties were under Nolan." So you're implying that NOT ONE PERSON IN THE ENTIRE 49ERS PROGRAM knew what the hell they were doing by naming Singletary the HC??? Really... is that what you're trying to say???

Dude... you're arguments are weak at best. You have no foundation what so ever besides whining and complaining.

Here's one for you to chew on... Aikman rookie year he went 0 - 11 as a starter. Guess who was the coach??? That's right child... Jimmy Johnson was and it was his 1st year as a NFL HC and they went 1 - 15. I bet you would have been calling him a Fraud as well and calling for his head.

So again... please with a cherry on top. Shut the hell up

Note that my name is SC Rick, not Rick.

I'm a Sing guy, but to use Willis as an example may be a bad one. Coach has admitted that he was opposed to drafting Willis, that it was McGM that insisted.

One thing I agree with though, we cannot assess Sing's impact on the 9ers under Nolan. Sing was an employee and I believe a good one, he did what he was told to do. He has demonstrated that "focus" is important to him. He would have focused on the job assigned. Just my opinion.

I didn't call you any names, Rick. And I'm not in a Sing club. And assistant HC is a paper title enabling a coach to move from one team to another and circumvent the NFL law requiring the move to be a promotion. In Sing's case, LB coach of the Ravens to LB coach of the Niners AND asst. HC. If you didn't know he was LB coach, for three and a half years, it explains a lot. Earlier, I admit I was fudging by suggesting I could no longer take you seriously. It was an effort to be charitable. Actually, from the first post of yours that I ever read only one thought has ever occurred to me: clueless.

Wasn't at you SC... was def pointed at Rick. I just can't stand all the bashing week in and week out.

I truly believe we have something great here in the making. MM just posted that Smith and Crabs got in some extra time after practice today!!!

Ahhh skeebers. You talk about people on here that don't bring anything on here but jibberish. Why don't you go back and look at your posts. All YOU bring is your comments on other peoples opinion. You can't handle other peoples opinions. So why do you post on here? I always minded my own business on here. Then you and your boyfreind a.e.s had to chime in with your 2 bits on one of my posts. I know you think your more important, but think again. My realist opinion about smith and my team are well deserved. I've been a fan for 25 years. I go to games and pay top dollar for merchandise. And every fan has a right to their opinion period. If you don't like it, then YOU quit posting. Your outlook on what a fan is, is whack. Fans have every right to call it like they see it. And it looks like I'm right. I don't want my team to suck, but that's the truth that I swallowed for a couple of weeks now. Your turn. And gilroy al. Same for you. This is still America. Remember that Nazis!

I was merely pointing out the similarities in names as I was jumping in.

I saw the thing about Smith and Crabtree getting in more work. Smith, with me, is now one of those guys that I will cheer while on the field, but I'll wish he weren't. I have no confidense. Kinda like the tease of a girlfriend many of us had, build your hopes only to let you down. I'm tired of it.

oldtimefan

High five for an apropos literary reference, and a succinct observation.

MM featuring Andy Lee today should serve as a reminder this team has talent. . .certainly a far cry from the 1979 season, when Walsh was forced to hold weekly in-season tryouts for defensive backs. . .seems like Tony Dungy was one of those guys picked up in one of those auditions.

Skoal, brother!

And you my friend are an ........

No I won't stoop to your level. I have never called another blogger names here and I am not about to start now.

Singletary and McCloughan are fair game as I am a paying customer. But People who go to the trouble of posting here deserve common courtesy even in disagreement. I know we are all passionate 49er fans otherwise we would not be posting here. I hope you can keep that in mind when you respond.

Now for the facts: I call your Jimmy Johnson and raise you Bill Walsh. Walsh went 2-14 his first year and 6-10 his second. But...Both Johnson and Walsh had resumes as successful head coaches. Johnson at the University of Miami, and Walsh as an OC with the Bengals and as HC at Stanford. Their track records gave them a certain level of trust.

Singletary, on the other hand, has never held a coordinator or a head coach position anywhere High School, College, or NFL. If his name was not Mike Singletary hall of famer, he would have had to put in 10+ years as an assistant coach with at least a few years as an offensive or a defensive coordinator of a winning team before he would have been considered for a HC position.

He may, in time, turn out to be a great head coach, but I am not happy with shelling out $ 840 per seat for season tickets while Singletary learns on the job.

Point taken as I don't expect him to give away his game plan. My biggest problem with Raye, now that he's conceded that the running game is going to need a decent passing game to make things work,is he seems slow to adjust even with all his experience. He's keeping his fastest and maybe best receivers on the bench while Morgan and Bruce get most of the playing time. If Crabtree doesn't have break away speed then you don't need another possession type receiver in there on 1st and 2nd downs or in 3 receiver sets. Stretch the field, quit just playing on a 10-15 yard field. To me, it's already halfway through the season and he's still trying to figure things out.

You say that Raye has conceeded that he neds a decent passing game to help the running game. I agree that he needs a "decent" passing game. But in reality Raye has been passing more than running this season in every game so far. So,if you mean his choices of which passes has not been "decent",then perhaps I agree with you for the most part. But if you think that Raye is just now trying to have a passing game to go alongwith his running game, then you are very wrong.
I do question Raye's playcalling at times, but he has always been more than willing to pass the ball,we know that because even with Hill as the QB,Raye has passed more than run all this season long. He has never been running a run dominated offense at any time during the 2009 season. The Niners offense has been very well balanced ! So,the numbers have been good,as far as balance between the run and pass, but perhaps the problem has been in the type of passes and runs and in the execution by the players.

As far as Alex Smith goes,I would say that he has surprised me a bit by showing some potential to be a decent QB. He has still not shown that he can BE a decent QB in the League and certainly not a special QB in this League but he has shown a POSSIBILITY that he MIGHT be able to become more than he had ever shown before. I am more than willing to give him some playing time now to determine if he will be reaching some hoped for potential OR if he will be the QB we saw against the Titans, who makes many good throws and many bad throws but overall played like a poor QB,a loser,as had been his usual .
He deserves the chance to prove he is the new and improved Alex and can put his past firmly in the past.

I apologize for the name calling....

My only point is that we need to give Singletary his chance. He's got the heart of this team and it shows. We don't have problems a ton of other teams are having with bad apples on the team or a coach no one likes or trusts. All the pieces minus 1 o r 2 seem to be in place. They just gotta learn to put it all together.

Our fan base is called The Faithfull yet it seems that so many have little to no Faith. By all means it's ok to ask questions and look for answers... but calling Singletary a Fraud I think is counter productive.

Have a great time at the game tomorrow... we're getting there at 1pm!!!

I'm praying we come out with a win =)

It's not how much you pass, it's when and why. The stats are skewed because while Hill was QB, Raye tried to run until they got behind and had to pass. Then he'd open things up and even Hill had success with some long drives. When you go into the two minute offense you're going to pass almost every play too.

Raye almost lost the AZ game because they didn't get any 1st downs running the ball at the end of the game and gave the ball back to Warner. He did lose the Minn game by only running on the Niners last two series and not getting any 1st downs and giving the ball back to Favre. One 1st down on either series would have put the game away.

The object is to fool the defense by not letting them know what you're going to do when you can't dominate in either phase of the offense and right now the Niners can't with their O-line.
Stetching the field with the passing game so there's not 8-9 men in the box all the time would give Gore a lot more room to run. Again it's not how much but when and why. The Niner "O" has only been using a short 10-15 yd field most of the time and giving the other teams "D" a major advantage. It's one of the reasons they've led the league in 3 and outs.

Skeebers you're a joke! You're on the Blog 24/7 unless things don't go your way! Then you do your disappearing act! Then like oneniner you come in with cheap shots against others!
I call 'em like I see 'em! I see decay and incompetence, and just because you're blind to it or just don't want to see it, that's your problem!
I don't keep writing the same silly comments like the team is 7 and 1 or even 4 and 4! That's what you do! And that's your right on the blog!
There's NO BANDWAGON here! The "bandwagon" is a word used by blind fans who refuse to see what's happening! Being positive is one thing, but being blind is another!
Blind fans = LOSER with nothing to write but false hopes and facts that don't make a bit of sense!
We're 3 and 5 dude and falling downward like the Titanic! And I'm going to call 'em like I see 'em no matter what you say!

TERRY, I commend you
but must say that BANDWAGON fans are the ones who jump on when times are good and leave when times are bad.
Your description of BLIND fans is spot on.
Its all roses and rainbows for some on this blog.
Bandwagon fans are like the ones WAY back who rooted for the Chiefs when Montana went there. AND THERE WERE PLENTY OF THEM.
But yea the team is bad and you can see it

IMO that makes you a realist. Good for you.
You are still a fan seeing but seeing your team with real eyes is important it makes you a better fan.. as i said
I commend you.

Gilroy,
I did say that you can't complain that Raye is not willing to pass enough BUT you can complain about what pass plays and when he calls those pass plays etc.

Raye actually called too many passes last week and Alex let him down by throwing far too many of them to the wrong team and over his receivers heads etc.
