help, I'm trying to find real birria

Postby Dara on Thu Dec 11, 2008 12:13 PM

I used to live in the mission district and was spoiled by real mexican birria. This was made with goat, and served wet like a soup, not with rice and beans. Anyone know of any great places in santa rosa/sebastopol/petaluma area?? Thanks so much!

Me, too. Short of LA and a great place in Kailua Kona (whole in the wall mex on the main drag which imports their goats from LA - natch!) I've not had any luck, either. Lepe's on Seb Road used to, but I think they're gone now

Try Chilenos where College Ave. and Fourth St. meet. Fernando and his brother Jose bought the place from Pepe awhile back and they do Birria and Menudo on the weekends.

We were driving to Sonoma on a Saturday a couple of weeks ago and noticed a birria stand on the right-hand side of the road (Highway 12) somewhere on the strip between Boyes Hot Springs and Sonoma...don't remember exactly where. They had outside tables set up and and sign that said Birria. We mentioned that we should really check it out, but didn't have time that day.

I just bought some birria at Lolas on Petaluma hill rd on Sunday. It was made with beef instead of goat & came with homemade tortillas. It was my first time having it so i can't tell you if it was a good birra. I do know that i enjoyed it. I think they only make it in Sundays.

Try Los Primos on Mendocino in Santa Rosa.

whoa there jefe! Anything called birria is going to be pretty good...but..."real birria", ah, that is something very special. If you can go into the place with a small plastic container and buy some of the cooked down savory liquid that is called "birria" then pretty good bet they know what they are doing and it is going to be real birria. A wonderful way to make many wonderful dishes at home. Another kind of birria is the kind that is simply some birra [shredded goat meat] in a small corn tortilla with a pinch of cillantro and lime. These are small, almost snacks and should be wolfed down with a bottle of Pepsi or good Mexican beer. My mouth waters at the thought. Happy hunting!

I've seen it as a special at the small Mexican restaurant in the Montecito Shopping Center on Montecito and Middle Rincon.
