Everyday eats

Postby BiteClub on Wed Jan 21, 2009 9:46 AM

What's your favorite place for everyday eats...the restaurants you return to again and again and again just because they're good (and maybe cheap)?

Last night I was talking to a new foodie friend and we both agreed that Vietnamese food is the kind of dining that's filling but doesn't leave you feeling ill -- and the price is right.

Tell me your favorite places for everyday dining....

Page's diner next to G&G is just a great little diner for lunch. Not too cheap, but just right for lunch/breakfast, and Paige is really nice! Also Saigon on 3rd and Dutton is great for vietnamese food, the BBQ chix with noodle is awesome!

Truc-Linh in Windsor on the green is the best Vietnamese I've had yet. There soups are the best there is. Super nice people too!

Checkers in downtown Santa Rosa is a favorite for affordable and healthy food. Any of their salads makes a whole meal, and there's always the free focaccia. My favorite salad is the smoked chicken with dried cranberries and arugula.

Dierk's Parkside for the burger, Taqueria Las Palmas for the chile relleno & carnitas tacos, Chloe's - any of their sandwiches, Mel's Fish & Chips & Saigon for the beef wrapped onion and the seafood soup. Each place is great for lunch - excellent food yet affordable.

We've loved La Bufa on 4th St in Santa Rosa for years. I love the huevos rancheros, beef enchiladas and my husband is addicted to the tacos de carne asada. Delia and Ana are always friendly and make you feel like a part of the family.

We like to eat at the Tapatia taco (and more) truck in the Guerneville Safeway parking lot. Their XL burrito is very tasty and plenty for 2 for lunch.
The Boat House in Bodega Bay has our favorite calamari and chips-good coleslaw, too. Not especially cheap, but always good and offers a plentiful serving, too.
Lunch at the Jenner Sizzling Tandoor is also good and affordable. I especially like the seekh kebab(lamb).
Don's Dogs at the Cafe Rio in Monte Rio offers excellent hot dogs(several types) with many condiments, such as sauerkraut, jalapenos, red onions, etc.Located behind Rio Theater on Hwy#116 at Bohemian Hiway.WiFi and dog-friendly,too.
The Gold Coast Coffee shop and Bakery in Duncans Mills is great, too.Excellent on-site organic roasted coffee beans and drinks, plus a daily soup and tasty pizza. Nice deck in rear.

We really like Colibri Grill at Montgomery/Sommerfield. Enormous menu, fabulous ribs and burgers, delicious breakfasts, homemade soups. Everything we've had there has been excellent, owner/chef really does it right. Affordable, not fussy and quite yummy.

Hillside Inn on Farmers Lane & Hwy 12. Homecooked food, fun staff, open daily 'til 2:30. Can order anything off menu all day. That means fried chicken at 7am and oatmeal, bacon & eggs at 2pm, if desired. Food cooked and served the way Gramma would do.
For steak and prime rib, can't beat Cricklewood in Larkflield. They have make a Tomato Bisque unsurpassed anywhere.

Martha's in Sebastopol for Mexican food. I have never had a bad meal there and have yet to eat the same thing twice. The back patio area is nice too.

Rin's Thai in Sonoma is great. Make sure you try the Puffy's!

Mary's Pizza Shack is the most frequent for us. We eat way more pasta and salad than pizza. The Mary's on 4th street in Santa Rosa has the same menu but with a full bar and a different atmosphere.

Mai Vietnamese on Gravenstein Hiway is our go-to restaurant - has been at least once a week for over two years. Food consistently fresh and delicious. Lynn, the owner, is the best. She makes everyone very welcome and is extremely accomodating.

D's Diner in Sebastopol is reasonably priced and usually quick with the vittles. And who can argue with Dollar Sushi at Sushi Hana on Wednesdays and Saturdays?

The onion soup at Bistro deCopain is the best I've eaten ever. That even includes a trip to France. The place is a little expensive, but it's worth it.

The soup is a meal. Go on Tuesday and they waive corkage for Sonoma County wines. Add a salad and you can be out the door with a 20% tip for about $20.00.

Totally agree that Vietnamese is superb for those times when want something simple, refreshing, and filling without feeling gross & over-stuffed.

Mai in Cotati is simply some of the finest Vietnamese I've ever had; the pho, spiced with clove, is so incredibly delicious. The bun is AMAZING, as well (especially with beef). My only complaint is that the menu is fairly limited, but next time I go I'll ask Lynn to recommend something new to me. (Lynn definitely is the most welcoming, friendliest restaraunteur I've ever met- she makes you feel like one of her family.)

Also like Thang Long in Petaluma. The pho is delicious, with a more hearty, beef-ified flavor than Mai's pho. The bun is OK, not great- the noodles are often too soft and kind of soggy. Service is sparse and simple, but the proprietor (I don't know his name, unfortunately, a mustachioed Asian man) is super friendly and appreciates repeat business. Lemongrass chicken here is very good - simple, but good - haven't tried many of the other dishes, but I should.

Is there any other good Vietnamese south of Santa Rosa, north of Novato?
