Congrats to Jed on being named Niner president a few minutes ago. He's a bright earnest guy and he tries hard. But I'm worried and here's why.

Jed is young and inexperienced. The team needs a football guy to oversee the football ops. Now that Jed got promoted, the team won't get that guy. Jed is that guy. Well, Jed and Scot McCloughan are. I wonder if McCloughan is savvy enough to bring the Niners where they need to go. There is some doubt about his abilities -- some of my readers refer to him as McClueless.

Jed clearly doesn't feel that way. A few minutes ago he said of McCloughan, "He's the GM and he's doing a great job."

Really? I don't think the Niners have enough football guys making football decisions for their football team. And Jed definitely is not a football guy.

Lowell,

Never fear, I'm here!

Eddie D. and Carmen Policy weren't football guys, either. McCoughan comes from a solid football background and worked with good people in Seattle. Let's see what he does on his own without Nolan around.

The Bears didn't have Walsh when Singletary was there as a player and still built a good organization. The president doesn't have to be a football guy. He does need to have football guys running the show, particularly people who can judge talent. McCloughan had a good rep as a talent evaluator. Hopefully he brings in other football people to play key roles in the scouting dept. That's how the Niners did it after Walsh left. George Siefert was a great coach, not so great judge of talent. The same applies to Mike Holmgren. You're right that they need more football people. But having Jed York calling the shots and adding more and better football people to the mix are not mutually exclusive. He's made two good, decisive moves: firing Nolan (who never should have been brought back for this season) and hiring Singletary. The family is not selling and better Jed than John at the helm.
