The 49ers are ridiculous. This is how far they have fallen. Scott Linehan turned down their offer to be offensive coordinator and took the same position with those awful Lions. That's quite a fall for the Niners.
Linehan said he preferred Detroit because it's closer to his family in St. Louis. This is not persuasive. If Linehan brings his family to Detroit he has to uproot his children. It would have been the same in San Francisco. If Linehan leaves his family in St. Louis, he is separted from his kids. It would have been the same in San Francisco. The Niners have fallen.
And there's the Dan Reeves thing. I told my kid Iggy the Niners interviewed Reeves for OC and, in all sincerity, Iggy said, "I thought he died."
He's still alive but he's been out of coaching since 2003 and that's a lifetime -- things have changed a lot since then. He is 65. The 49ers are looking for a coordinator to stay a long time. If they hire Reeves how long can he stay? He had John Elway in Denver but Elway said Reeves got in the way of his development. All in all, going after Reeves is an Al Davis move. Poor 49ers.
Dan Reeves is vibrant and young. The game has not passed him by. I see no problem with this hire!!
Regards,
Joe Paterno and Tom Walsh.
Well that wasn't nice of Iggy, but it's pretty funny. Actually Dan has a history of heart problems and I think he almost did a few time didn't he?
You really make some spot on points Lowell. You just runied my day. :-)
Having a kid named iggy is what is really ridiculous
Petty stuff. Ignatz is a perfectly wonderful name with a long comic strip history.
I was wondering who would be your new wipping boy now that Barry Bonds is out of the spotlight but you came back nicely by dogging out a whole team the the poor Niners
So now you latch onto Dan Reeves' age. Wow. Guess that's a little too outside the box for you, Lowell, but last time I checked that worked pretty well for Indianapolis with Tom Moore (5 years older than Reeves) and Pittsburgh with Dick Lebeau (6 years older than Reeves). Probably Iggy thinks they're dead, too. Pretty funny, huh?
Reeves may not be the best choice but let's give McSing some credit. I have no idea what he's got left but I presume if he passes the interview that Alzheimers hasn't started.
He is not going to be looking for a head coaching job, so if he comes here he won't be a one year and out guy. He would be a perfect mentor for Rathman, if Tom is on track to becoming an OC.
Rich makes a pretty good point. Age alone is not the determining factor. Myself, I'd love to see him come in on the staff with another OC, maybe Jackson, as a senior advisor.
I was married to Sid Gilman's neice at a time when he was "retired". These guys never retire. Sid was consulting with pro and college teams on a regular basis helping them draw up game plans. I must assume Dan has been doing the same thing.
Too old? I thought the same thing when the Rams hired Dick Vermeil to be head coach in the late 90s. You and Iggy probably thought so too. I laughed at the Rams then, but was amazed when the Rams won the Super Bowl a couple years later? Sometimes, the game doesn't pass people by. If Reeves is successful, it wont take long for the 49ers to get back to the playoffs, and if we have him for 5 years, that would be plenty. BTW, it's a heckuva lot cheaper to live in Detroit than SF. Try looking at the BIG picture. There are other factors involved in a relocation. Maybe Linehan is telling the truth?
Besides the IGNORANT and MEAN SPIRITED comments about your child, and you and I would probably get a laugh out of the names that they call their kids (if they even have any) let's put it all out into the open.
All the comments about the current OC situation seem to be one extreme is right for one coach, and the other extreme is right for another.
One coach, Sing, who was signed to the HC position before he showered after the last game of the season seems to some the greatest choice since Bill Walsh. He just HAD to be signed in haste because he was soooo wanted by other teams, which is not a fact that has been proven by any stretch of ANY imagination.
Now the OC position that is taking so long (Now 7 or 8 or who knows at this point at last count of coaches)is trumpeted as the great Sing's wisdom and pondering thought of Socrates over the situation. I'm sorry but facts don't support it, either.
It smells like a confused front office who can't find anyone who wants the job, except an unwanted coach who begs for it. Another sad tale of the 49ers during the York years. Our poor 49ers is right!
.... Could it be, all about Vick?...... He paid the price (dearly) and rightfully so !..... Dan Reeves drafted him, and he (Vick) has the right to a job in the NFL .....
You just couldn't help yourself could you. You almost made it through your post without throwing a body blow at Al Davis. It's becoming a pretty lame, redundant joke.
For all of you reaching for more and more bizarre explanations, just remember the concept of Occam's Razor. All other things being equal, the simplest solution is the best.
In this case the simplest solution is that the trioka of the Young Jedi, McClueless, and Mr. Dropped Pants does not enjoy any respect within the NFL coaching fraternity. Just think about it, Linehan was willing to go to an 0-16 team instead of working for Singletary. Evough said.
