I read where some Texas congressman doesn't like the current college bowl system and wants to introduce legislation saying they can't call it a national championship game if there are no playoffs leading up to the game. This guy wants playoffs.
I can't stand this guy and I don't even know him.
He is an advocate for what I call the Super Bowlisation of college football. This is a bad thing. Why? Because college football is not pro football. It is college kids most of whom won't play in the NFL. It is rah rah and bonfires and memories. It is fun.
I can't stand the idea of making college ball into pro ball. I don't even like the idea of a championship game although I live with it. College football is regional. It is Cal/Stanford, UCLA/USC. It is not about finding out who's the absolute best that year. That is beside the point.
I wish congressmen would stick to important things and lay off college sports. Doesn't this guy have something more important to do?
I'm surprised no one has commented yet. I agree in concept but the fact is that college football "is" BIG money. So didn't that "old college feel" leave the stadium a long long longggggg time ago? If you ask me for the money being tossed around those kids "having fun" are getting exploited and have been for some time now. I think anything from Texas is suspect including this congressman and his "big" Texas idea. I mean doesn't he have anything to better to worry about right now? I get he's from Texas and in "don't mess with Texas" football is religion, but it still seems pretty shallow to be concerned with that....right now.
However my main point still stands. With all the money invested in these bowl games and the big payouts to the schools...college football is business. Ask all the coaches that get fired next season if you don't believe me.
The BCS concept was never very clear in the first place. Was it about keeping the bowl system in place making money for the colleges and making money off a BCS Championship game?
Lowell, how do you feel about the basketball Final Four championship? If you dont like football playoff games then one cant like basketball ones?
All I know is most of the fans dont like the current BCS approach (especially the talking heads on TV). So there does seem to be momentum for change.
I always wondered if there was anybody out there not making money on the bowl games who was not in favor of a college football playoff system. I guess there is.
