I was watching TV earlier today and I almost fell out of my chair. There was the head of the Humane Society saying with a straight face Michael Vick will be their spokesman. Where do I go to get sick?

Vick, a criminal and a dog murderer, is now spokesman for the Humane Society. Shame on the Humane Society. It's like getting Bernie Madoff to be the spokesman for greater regulation of the securities industry. Why don't we all just forgive Bernie? He seems contrite enough and maybe he's willing to be a spokesman. Let's give him another chance. More chances for everyone.

Vick doesn't get to be the spokesman. That job allows him to give the impression he's reformed. That is a job to clean up his image, pure and simple. It's pure public relations. The Humane Society should not allow Vick to use them like this.

Vick doesn't get to start at the top as a spokesman wearing a jacket and tie and looking good. If Vick wants to help animals, let him start at the bottom like a regular person. Let him work at a neighborhood animal shelter. Let him care for sick animals. Let him clean out cages and learn what it's like to get poop on his hands in a good cause. Don't play us for suckers. Shame on the Humane Society. To read my column on Vick click here.

Dude, give it up. You can't "murder" an animal.

Interesting. I disagreed with your earlier post about Vick, but totally agree with you here.

What's next? George W. Bush becoming a spokesman for ZAP!

Do you think the NFL made a huge donation? Thinking they'll see a return on the investment through ratings and merchandise once he's back on the field. I can't see any other rational reason for this. It's like Ellen doing a condom ad.

Except Ellen never bankrolled porn.

Hi Lowell

Did you get this upset when terrorists cut off David Pearls head?

I didn't think so. I think ypor ballance is off

Lowell, I couldn't agree with you more. Michael Vick is a sick and greedy individual who wouldn't stop at inflicting terrible pain and suffering on innocent and vulnerable creatures to break the law and benefit himself finanancially.

He absolutely should be caring for animals in a shelter. How about animals who were abandoned as a result of this mortagae fiasco, another result of greed and incompetence? There are thousands of them now homeless because of human stupidity and neglect.

My donations will still go to the local shelter. No money for you, National Humane Society. Wake up and smell the coffee.

I assume you are all vegans and have never eaten a (dead) animal in your life. Hypocrites.

100% correct. Very surprised at the Humane society
here. Like having B. Bonds, M Mcguire come to
your school and preach against steroids.

This is what a REAL bad guy is like.

Shame on you Lowell (again) for looking at the situation from the narrowest angle possible.

If Mike Vick is using the Humane Society, then they are also using him. Here is an excerpt from the Humane Society website, justifying their tentative relationship with Vick (link here: http://hsus.typepad.com/wayne/2009/05/vick-dogfighting.html):

----------
"The growth in dogfighting is occurring in inner cities, and it’s predominantly with young African American boys and men. That’s a fact, and we have to do something to arrest these social trends.

When Michael Vick asked to help, I was as skeptical as anyone. And then I put my strategist hat on, and tried to imagine what a guy like Vick could do to help us combat the problem. We used his case to strengthen the laws in America, and now we can use his celebrity and the story of his fall as a parable to reach kids in the cities who will pay attention to him....

... I am not convinced yet. If this is a simply a self-interested ploy to rehabilitate his image or return to football, we will find out soon enough, and we will repudiate it. But if Michael Vick is sincere, then we can, we must, use his story to advance our broader mission—saving lives and ending dogfighting."
------

The fact is, more people know about the Humane Society than they did yesterday. I can't understand how this is a bad thing. Then again, if you think the world revolves solely around Michael Vick, as Lowell does, then maybe it is.

It is too bad people do not appreciate you more, Lowell. Reality is a good thing always. Seeing what is really happening helps us to avoid being drawn into it. You are too intelligent for your own good and most people are too reactionary to even begin to think about whether what you say makes any sense. Yes, Madoff and Vick and a host of others are sinners. They are then lumped in with all of humanity to the non-thinker, but to the thinker, it is deeper than that. If I am a sinner, doing things not as much to myself, but to others, then why do I deserve more attention? Why does Madoff, Vick, or even Cheney, or anyone for that matter really deserve more attention for doing wrong? Lots of good people work, live and shut up. But we have to put Vick out in front of the public so that we can attempt to influence lots of nuts out there who are still positioning dog against dog? They are not willing to fight so they have dogs do it for them - a bunch of cowards. People won't change, they are fools, and even if ONE dog is saved, it does not negate the fact that the attention Vick gets counters any good the Humane Society or another might say is the case. I would rather ONE dog be sacrificed to save ONE child. Lots of young kids are LEARNING that you can do wrong on ridiculous levels, and eventually, they will ease up and let you back in so kids in their minds will keep on keeping it real, doing the wrong thing. If the rewards did not exist, then we could talk about sin is sin. I guess that is why they say money is the root of all evil, huh. The Humane Society or some other group that is leveraging the sinner does not think big picture and is only motivated by the attention they will get in a guy like Vick for all the wrong reasons. The entire charade is a joke and leads to kids getting the opposite message that they want us to believe. Do the right thing, Vick...get a job, join the rest of the working world, and shut your mouth.
