This is about Stephen Curry mania, the latest Warriors foolishness. I refuse to be caught up in Curry-mania and these are the reasons.
1: Curry is an offensive player. But the Warriors already have plenty of offense. They need a big guy who can rebound and defend. So Curry is off the main point.
2: We hear the Warriors were going to package the 7th pick in a trade with the Suns but when Curry came to them, they pulled the pick off the table. This means Don Nelson is excited about Curry. Nelson is always excited about new players before they play for him. Then he gets down on them. Recent examples -- Marco Belinelli, Anthony Randolph, Jamal Crawford. So Nelson is in the love affair stage with Curry but that will end sometime in training camp.
3: Curry may be good -- he's not THAT good -- but the Warriors generally find a way to screw things up. It will be interesting to see if and how they louse this one up. The dramatic possibilities are enormous. Monta Ellis locks himself in a closet and cries. Ellis refuses to pass the ball to Curry. Hey, use your imaginations.
This Curry draft pick will not matter a hill of beans until we see what else the Warriors do. They need a power forward who does power forward things. That is the key. So far the Warriors haven't found the key. They're still fumbling with the lock.
Lowell, agreed that the Warriors still need someone who can rebound and defend, although this is not importaat enough for Nelson.Even if they acquire someone like this, if he cannot shoot, this player will "ride the pine". Nelson is horribly 2 faced, and he indeed will praise you on day one, and then stab you in the back and cut you when he sees something that he does not like. I thought that he was just terrible with young players (Randolph), but he also is just as bad with veterans (see Jamal Crawford). He may have the second most wins in his career in the NBA, but I would not trust this guy any farther than I could throw him.
The two big needs of the Warriors were point guard and beef. With Curry the Warriors believe that they have found their long term point. They may be wrong, but once you've acquired the answer to one of their two problems, you don't trade him away. I think they'll still be able to get a big man.
C'mon Lowell:
As a Warriors fan I have to have SOMETHING to believe in!
Curry is not so much a scorer as he is a playmaker. Warriors were severely lacking in that last year. How many games did they loose last year because they turned the ball over excessively or just made dumb decisions leading to one wasted possession after another. You do NOT want Stephen Jackson making the majority of your playmaking decisions.
Here are the basketball people who think Curry has star potential and can be an impact player
Steve Kerr: Obviously because they insist he be included in any trade. Marcus Thompson said the Suns think he is the "black steve nash"
Mike DiAntoni: They same guy who helped mold Steve Nash.
Bobby Knight: Called him the best passer of the College back court players.
Dick Vitale: OK he also said the Warriors should have taken Reece Gaines over Mickeal Peitrus, so maybe that's not such a good example.
Don Nelson: Also compared him to Steve Nash. Nelson has a pretty good reputation evaluating Guards. See Nash, Hardaway,Richmond...
Bruce Jenkins
All this to say, Curry looks like a player to keep.
Generally, I'll give Riley the benefit of the doubt that he can make some common sense basketball decisions; I'm sure he was the driving force to reach and communication with Ellis. I can't ever see Nelson doing something like that
come on Lowell.....
so you're telling me Biedrins, BW, MB is not enough for Amare?
Curry is an unkown right now...some say he can be a star or at least an offensive scorer. WE can't just give everybody away....Warriors also needs a good supporting cast for the person their trading for?
It's not like the W's are not taking any risk!
Amare had microfracture knee surgery, eye surgery plus word going around that he's a diva? and a year left on his contract. This is not a homerun trade for W's.
I'm glad Nellie is showing an excellent Poker face.
we need stop giving away all the good players.
Lowell,
I often agree with your take, but not this time. Curry ultimately will be a special player. Randolph, too. Curry is exactly what the Warriors' need: a playmaker with a high BB IQ. Nellie is going to love this guy, and play him alot. Every team in the league (just about) needs a good Power Forward, but they are very hard to find. Actually, the Warriors are stocked pretty well at 4 and 5. Randolph is muscling up this summer and has grown another inch. He will be a force. I'd like to see the Warriors develop Wright, as well at the 4.
Getting a playmaker was the biggest need and the Warriors lucked into Curry at #7. There is good reason for fans to be excited about Curry.
Lowell, you're such a DOWNER. If you don't have anything positive to write about - don't write. If the W's packaged Curry, Biedrins, wright, and another for Stoudamire, you'd be writing "there goes our future" If the W's had the #1 Pick and took Blake, you'd like that they should've traded down and taken Curry.
