Lowell,
Can you dig a little into why Hank Greenwald let broadcasting. I know he "retired" to take care of his son, but I always felt there was more behind the story.
I recall he mentioned he didn't like the "direction" of the game. At the time, I was pretty sure it was Bonds' attitude and steroid use. I believe Hank knew what was going on with steriods and was disgusted by it.
Did he get shoved aside because of Jon Miller? Was there friction between him and KNBR?
I always though Hank was terrific, but he seems to have disappeared. They used to bring in Lon Simmons to do some Sunday broadcasts, why not Mr. Greenwald?
I give major props to Hank Greenwald. He labored hard broadcasting some very bad Giants teams and always kept me interested. I salute him.
My vote is for Hank Greenwald. He is the most interesting personality and also the most knowledgable on the game of baseball.
Hank made those miserable times that preceded the Humm Baby era, as enjoyable as possible.
It would be nice to see more of him, and maybe he could squeeze us into his personal schedule. I respect his decision to leave the game and the current Giant management should find a way to make him feel a part of this organization. I recognize the nature of his fall-out with the previous ownership and he had every right to speak up about the poor conditions of Candlestick Park.
Just as it's hard to compare players of past generations...It would have been fun to hear Hank do some broadcasts in his prime, from 24 Willie Mays Plaza.
Lowell, I'd like to see you do an article on Greenwald, who for some reason, seems to be a forgotten man with the Giants. Strange, since they do such a good job at honoring their past. Greenwald remains, in my opinion, one of the best baseball announcers of all time...witty, knowledgeable, and smart. He could paint a picture on radio like few others.
