I have gotten a ton of comments to my Mike Singletary blogs, which I appreciate. I want to stir discussion. One thing I would like to address. Some Cohn Zohn readers say I criticize Singletary because I don't like him and they say I don't like him because he emphasizes his religion, so I'm trying to get even with him.
I can honestly say those criticisms of me are untrue and I'd like to address them. I don't like or dislike Singletary. He's a sports figure I cover. He seems like a nice man, as far as I know him. He's thoughtful and sincere and seems like a decent guy. He's also wound very tight.
I had an issue with him praising God for victories. Call this a philosophical difference between him and me. I admire religious people, just don't want them shoving their beliefs in my face. Anyway, Singletary has stopped praising God after victories, and he hasn't had any victories in a while. And I have an issue with him lecturing the media how terrific his players are when I don't see the proof on the field.
My criticisms of Singletary are strictly as a coach. He needs to win -- needs to win tonight. I do wonder if he has the stuff to be a head coach, but I would wonder that about any new and untested coach who has lost more than he won.
If Singletary turns out to be a terrific coach I will praise him to the skies and I'll do it happily. And he will deserve that.

Hi Lowell
I watched the Sing press conference and listened to your radio interview with Ralf B.
On the radio interview you said you were getting tired of Sing's (paraphase here) rantings. You clearly are beginning to think Sing's statements are BS.
That is OK. Here is what I think is the problem:
You are from the obnoxious New Yorker mold. When you ask a question it is laced with cynisism and lack of respect.
When you state 'all I did was ask a question'....it is not true. You, either do this purposefully or can't help it, line your questions with disrespect.
I've read your articles going back to your SF days. The above nails your work to a tee.
You are upset because Sing. praised God after wins? Why? Just because you do not share his view point doesn't mean you should nock it.
You got all upset over L. Johnson using gay slurs. Maybe LJ doesn't want gays beliefs to be thrown in his face.
You are contradicting yourself Cohn. You cannot say it is ok for some people to throw around their believes and not others.
You are a disgrace to the PD. But I will be praying for you whether you like it or not. Whatever happens, win or lose, we should praise God/Jesus.
Singletary sells snake oil:

"I had an issue with him praising God for victories. Call this a philosophical difference between him and me."
Since when do sports writers have to agree with a coaches belief system?
I can appreciate your comments above. I do have a few comments on your blog above
"I admire religious people, just don't want them shoving their beliefs in my face."
I'm not religious, and concur with the above sentiment. I will say that I think what Singletary does fall's short of pushing religion in your face. If he said I think we should all take a minute and praise god for this victory, I would have a huge issue with it!
"And I have an issue with him lecturing the media how terrific his players are when I don't see the proof on the field."
Does he lecture Lowell, or are you over sensitive? And exactly what would you have him say? Ya Smith played lousy, and Manny is a bust as pass rusher, and are line sucks? I mean really Lowell, there is no answer that to that questions that would help his team, in your opinion what would be a good answer? The truth is their is no good answer. He has to take a public stand on the side of his players.
As for his coaching ability: I think it's fair to say that the team has played better under Singletary than Nolan, Erickson, and I don't think it fair to go back to Marriucci totally different team. And to be fair Lowell, you have no idea how involved or not involved Singletary is in game planning, you just don't.
But I would say this team except for the Atlanta Game was ready to play every week, and maybe they are not as good as we thought, not to mention their young Lowell at almost every position. We lack veterans, like the old Niner teams had a good mixture of old and new. I do think it's fair to say that we are headed down the right track, the train just hasn't pulled into the depot yet.
Does this change my view that Cohn's biased?
I'll go w/ the words of a wise guy..
""It may. We'll see what happens."
Lowell doesn't like or dislike Singletary. He did, however, and still does, love Bill Walsh, and I wonder if he maybe wishes that Singletary would fail, so the organization's failure to sign or even approach Mike Shanahan, a coach very much in the mold of a Bill Walsh, will be forever laid bare. Also, Singletary admonished him in a press conference for asking, in my humble opinion, a very stupid question. "How do you think your players will respond?" They will respond like a team staring a four game losing streak in the face, that's how, and anyone, even a NY sportswriter would know that. Does that mean they will play better? Who knows? He's a coach, not Nostrodamus. He expects them to respond in a favorable manner, becuase as a coach, it's up to him to get them prepared to play like champs, even if they're losing. If you're asking if the Niners will play better because they're tired of losing, well, that's a dumb question that no one will know the answer to until gameday. The conventional wisdom says yes, and the coach will go along with the conventional wisdom. In reality, you were insulting Singletary with that question, and he rightfully got pissed.
"It's time for Singletary to put up or shut up"
I take umbrage with this as well. Who is playing Lowell? The players, Singletary in case you don't know does not actually suit up, he does not catch passes, block or tackle. Why in your mind is everything centered around the coach.
If I wrote an article and you were my editor pointed it out to me time and time again, and I continued to use horrible grammar, in your mind where would the fault lie, you, failing to fire me, or me for not making the recommended changes?
"Anyway, Singletary has stopped praising God after victories, and he hasn't had any victories in a while"
So he stopped praising God for niner victories because of Lowell's comments....it's Lowell's fault!
Actually I totally agree with Lowell in terms of the praising God part. It doesn't make sense to think God cares about or prefers one team over another. That's just silly. To thank God for your players and their efforts, health etc seems fine though.
That said...I hope God doesn't like the Bears.
I have a “tough question” for you Lowell. I have to ask because I don’t think you have any kind of professional experience in the NFL. That leads me to believe that your opinion carries about as much weight as mine. In my opinion you’re just a fair weather fan. When things are tough, you point the finger at Singletary, yet, if the team succeeds, you admit you'll be the first to praise him. So what makes a fair weather fan, with no professional experience in the NFL, qualified to criticize someone with over 15 years of NFL experience? If you respond I guess we’ll see
Your reasoning is flawed. You assume I am a fan. I am not a fan. I am a professional sports columnist and have been for 30 years. I do not root for or against the 49ers or other teams. I write about why they are doing well or poorly. If they do poorly, like the Niners, I try to examine why and I criticize them for not playing well. That is my job. A fan's job is different. Lowell
Lowell did Sing make you follow in prayer after a victory or something? If not how did he shove his beliefs in your face? Even better, how do you admire religious people if you don’t want them to display their religion? Love your logic, please, please, please break it down for me!
Your just in love with yourself.
so then you're a know-it-all? What makes you qualified?
I understand that you've been a sports columnist for a long time, I'm sure that you write beautifully. That wasn't my question though. Typically to become proficient at something you go to school for it or learn it on the job. Most NFL analysts are ex players or coaches so they have some insight on what they’re talking about. You're a professional writer, not a professional sportsman, so where does your insight come from? Until I get my answer I have to assume you’re a know-it-all, which really isn’t a lot better than a fair weather fan. Actually, it’s probably worse.
By the way, I still would love for you to clear up that logic on religion for me, hopefully in the beautifully written form of a columnist with 30+ years of experience. So hurry up and write me something nice, I’ll be waiting.
Come on Lowell you can’t quit now, I think we set a new record in your comments section. Just like Sing has to answer your bonehead questions you should have to answer mine. That’s how we keep everyone accountable, right? Unfortunately I have to be going so we’ll have to continue this later. Hopefully the 49ers win tonight, then you can jump back on the band wagon.
Your #1 Fan,
Jimmy D.
LOL @ Buck. Clearly a mouth-breather with no life.
Lowell, you don't have to defend yourself at all. you are doing the job that other people are afraid of doing around Singletary and the 49ers. Ever since John York took over, everybody has to tip toe around certain things nad let York ruin the team. Thankfully, people like you< Ratto, and Kawakami care for this team. Killion and Knapp also cared as they were the best female reporters. Cohn, ignore the idiots that badmouth you. They are little Obama wannabes that love to see our country failing.
Jimmy D, do me a favor. Get lost. Don't go on blogs like this to badmouth Cohn or any other reporter that does their job for a living. We do not live in a secret society. What Sing and the 49ers are doing is wrong. Promises are being broken. People like Smith have no opportunity to try. ANd gas bags like you are the reason why Obama is ruining our country. Get off the forums!
What Sing and the 49ers are doing is wrong??? Last I checked they were doing their jobs too ya retard. And what does Obama have to do with sports? Darren my disgruntled friend, after the Niners win tonight I want you to wrap your chubby little fingers around your neck and choke yourself. If you can't do that for me, do it for your country. I promise everything will be better after....for all of us!
Hi Lowell,
I'm sorry but I am completely exhausted of your journalism. Many moons ago you used to have great points of view on the world of sports. You must be getting too old. All that you express these days is negativity. You consistently go after Mike Singletary because honestly he put you on the spot and made you feel less of a man. Get over your smugness. You probably don't even drink wine. You just fart in a glass and smell the essence. You are so into your own little negative world that you love the smell of your own farts. How about you start to give uplifting journalism about the 49ers. They haven't finished games, but have been in each and every game other than the Atlanta game. Give Singletary a break. Stop with your smugness, and please, oh please stop smelling your own farts.
We'll see huh???...the only thing I saw tonight was an old washed up columnist look pretty stupid. Looks like Sing knew what he was talking about. At least you have a few hours to try and figure out how to defend yourself. I'm sure you'll come up with some new bonehead comments though. Hey, you may even get another five seconds of air time. But you will never have as much class as Singletary.
What I got from this column is that you have issues and you have problems with Singletary's style and content.
So tell me how that differs from disliking him?
My problem with players and coaches praising god in victory is, how come they dont blame him in a loss?? Or if their side wins," god was great and helped them win", which maybe true, but happened to the other teams religious people?
I am not religous and I am ok with people that turn to god.Life is tough and what ever helps you sleep better at night, I am all for it and more power to you.But some of this stuff is just crazy.
It would be funny if Sing gets up there one time after a loss and said "God really let us down this time.I dont know what happened ? We worked very hard and prepared for this team, I went to church every night after practice and said a prayer before and after every meal. But still the other side kicked our behind. Does anyone have the number for satan?"
Perhaps I am just a little jealous of god, he gets all the credit when things are going great and none of the blame when the ship hits the fan.
I wish I was so lucky at my work.
Darren says, "Thankfully, people like you< Ratto, and Kawakami care for this team".
Cohn says, "You assume I am a fan. I am not a fan. I am a professional sports columnist and have been for 30 years. I do not root for or against the 49ers or other teams".
Darren, seriously, wtf? Do you even read what Cohn says? Like he CARES for the team? He doesn't care. He is not a fan. He's a professional sports columnist with no rooting interest. And really, Obama? That's your analogy? It isn't Jimmy D that will ruin a blog nor a country, it is ingnorance of other's beliefs. But hey, believe what you want to believe. It is your right.
And being a NON-religious person myself who does not care what Singletary has said about his god following games, I would like to know how Singletary shoved religion in Cohn's face. I'm a fan of sports and human nature, and I would like to know the answer. Cohn answered Jimmy D's question, and now is refusing to answer a legitimate follow-up question.
And Cohn, how can you NOT correct Darren when he made his comment? Let him know you don't root for or against. Maybe a direct comment from you to him would clear that up.
