I just drove home from Mike Singletary's Monday presser. I was pretty quiet throughout. Remember, I flew in late last night from Orlando Florida (through Chicago) after driving to Orlando from Vero Beach where I attended my nephew's wedding. So I was kind of tired.

But as I listened to Singletary I was struck by how comfortable he feels with the media, how in control.
This from a man riding a 4-game losing streak. Make whatever excuses you want for him but losing 4 in a row is losing 1/4 of the season and that's not good. So I initiated the following exchange. I didn't have my recorder because it broke and I didn't have time to buy a new one because I flew to the wedding, so another reporter furnished me with this transcript.

¶ LC: What makes you think your players can turn it around? (I also said Singletary's words to the media  were quite motivating but we aren't his players.)

¶ "You know what sir, I don't know where you're from and I don't know what you really meant by that. I understand that you're not my players. I'm thankful that you're not my players. I do want to win. But let me say this, you have to know guys that you spend days with. You have to know the guys that you spend hours with. Just like you when you're at home. I don't know how much time you spend with your kids. But it's important that when things happen you have a pretty good idea of how your kids are going to respond. If you tell me that one of my kids slapped you, one of my kids spit on you, I've got a pretty good idea of who it would be, because I know them. 'OK, that was Jack, or you know what, that was Brooke.' When I think about our guys, when I'm talking about our guys, I know them. When you spend as much time with these young men and you know what they're made of you have a pretty doggone good idea how they're going to respond. Does that makes sense?"

¶ LC: "It may. We'll see what happens."

¶ MS: "It may? You asked me a question. I thought I responded to your question."

¶ LC: "I appreciate your response."

¶ MS: "Well I thank you, very much."

¶ LC: "And I wish you the best."

¶ MS: "I appreciate it."

¶ LC: "But when you say you know how they're going to respond, I don't know how they're going to respond. You may know better than I."

¶ MS: "You're not the coach. I wasn't asking you the question. You asked me the question."

¶ LC: "You asked me if I thought you did OK with the answer."

¶ MS: "Thank you."

¶ LC: "My response is, I guess we'll find out. You clearly have more confidence in your players than other people may, including me, and that's why they play the games."

¶ MS: "You're exactly right, and I appreciate that. Are you going to be here next week?"

¶ LC: "I'm going to be here all the weeks."

¶ MS: "Now that's exciting. That's outstanding. I'm looking forward to it. I want you to sit right here, or get a seat right here and you ask me those same question."

¶ LC: "I'll stand up there next to you."

¶ MS: "Outstanding. Fantastic."

¶ LC: "OK."

¶ MS: "All right."

So, that's me and Mikey. He sort of came unglued, no?

Lowell,

Don't you think your comments were out of line? I don't have a problem with the media giving Singletary hard questions - I actually appreciate that you asked him that rather than the softballs other reporters were throwing. But the way you phrased it seemed inappropriate to me. It seemed condescending and you put yourself in the middle of the story.

I'm a fan of your work, but you disappointed me today. Rather than let your great question speak for itself, you felt the need to remind Singletary that the media are not his players and that you personally don't believe in the 49ers. Just my opinion.

But I think you're better than that.

david

Thanks Lowell. I also felt that Coach Singletary was too comfortable up there. When listening to the press conference it sounded exactly the way Mike Nolan's press conferences would go. "Yes we're losing but we're working hard and 'it smells good.'"

Well we've just lost to a 1-6 team on our homefield and now 4 games in a row. Haven't beaten a team outside the NFC West. And haven't made the playoffs since 2002. No more of this "things look good in the building and it'll come together soon." This team needs to feel the pressure to win NOW. Thank you Lowell for trying to hold the organization accountable, I hope you continue to do so.

I agree with davidg on this one. You come across like you got caught being smug and were trying to cover it up. It seems you either weren't listening to his response or you didn't ask the question you thought you asked and were backpedaling.

Singletary did come unglued, but it also seems as if that was your desired outcome. You say it yourself, "But as I listened to Singletary I was struck by how comfortable he feels with the media, how in control. "

Your opinion is that someone on a four game losing streak shouldn't be in control or comfortable and when Singletary answered your question you dismissed his answer.

"What makes you think your players can turn it around?"

Singletary's response, essentially: I know my players and I think they'll respond.

Singletary then asked you if that made sense and you said. "It may. We'll see what happens."

Whether the team responds or not, was not your question. So, to me, you come off sounding like you were tired from your trip and you didn't like Singletary's attitude and you tried to elicit the response you think Singletary should have.

If this is new string ,I apologize for my net ignorance. Football, in my life, is based on making the play. Nothing else matters.

Lowell,

Lucky it wasn't Cable, your day may have gotten a little longer. Don't really need all the info on your flight, wedding, etc....

Lowell,

So your incredibly witty question just made Singletary all "shook up". The header for your blog makes you look like a horses arse. The question was a good one, but your blogged response makes you come across like pompous jerk.

I watched the whole thing on TV. I thought Sing took you down to Chinatown.

Agree with Davidg. I love you work Lowell, but I do think you were out of line when you went "we'll see what happens". You question was fair but that phrase made you come across like you were "challeging" him or something. If you were not happy with his response, then I think you should have simply asked him to elaborate further.

But the "we'll see what happens" remark was uncalled for.

Lowell,

Keep it up. I do not care how he feels, I want to know objectivly "why' the players are going to respond!

Singletary is a control freak! And control freaks spend their lives between the lines THEY draw! If you ask a question that goes outside their lines, they consider it an affront to them personally!
You just went outside the lines of Singletary! And that's the respose you get!
I thought Bill Walsh had a testy time with the press at times! But this guy is something else! I don't think he'll hit you in the jaw like Cable! But maybe in the stomach!

I watched the press conference live, and I thought your lead question was fair Singletary's initial response was somewhat uncalled for, but he finished with a thoughtful comment and his analogy worked for me. But then you became an arse.... with the "It may, we'll see what happens" comment. You might have as well said... "Whatever", because that is how flippant it came across. I understand that maybe he irked you with his questioning of who you were.... but your attitude was not professional. And please if I hear another person talk about how bad Titans are because they are 1-6 .... this was the #1 Seed in the AFC last year. Do you think they are really as bad as there record? Losing Haynesworth was key, but they are not the Detroit Lions or St. Louis Rams.

You're horrible at your job.

I think it's obvious that you're biased against Singletary because of his religion(Your many pointless articles concerning God), and are trying to bring him down at every opportunity.

You appear to be a very small man who is obviously insecure. You should retire...it seems like you have nothing left to offer at this point.

Personally, whether it was a flippant remark by Lowell or not, Im glad he responded in the way that he did. If Sing got mad, Good! Our Niners stink! AGAIN! Who cares about Sing's feelings? Let him be confronted by our frustrations as fans. How many losing seasons have we sat through now where the coach (Mooch, Erikson, Nolan, Sing) tells us how great they are and they are turning things around? And it never happens! Give him some fire for us Lowell!

I just listened to the exchange with Singletary and your interview on KNBR. The question you asked Singletary was perfectly fine. But the "you're being very motivational to us here, we're not your players..." remark that lead into the question was what set him off. And that got totally overlooked in the interview with Ralph and Tom. You're all laughing and acting like Singletary overreacted to the question, which wasn't the case, he was reacting to that remark, which I thought was totally appropriate. If you're going to antangonize a bear, no pun intended, be prepared to get dragged through the woods.

Lowell -
I listened to your comments on KNBR and the recorded interaction with Singletary. It's your job to ask questions, and your job to be skeptical. But you asked how he knows they'll turn it around - and he answered you "because I know my family". I think both question and answer were fair. Sure, they need to win to prove it (I also think the game was well played with the exception of the Hope interception and the missed tackle by Harralson) but he told you he has faith in his team and you questioned that.

I think his sarcastic retort was well deserved, but you kinda reacted like a middle-schooler. Singletary has been very up front with the media this year, and he appears to be acting and reacting to the weekly changes in the NFL.

Of course we'll see how they play, but I certainly don't think he came unglued and I think you may have been out of line.

Hi Lowell, You're comments were not only appropriate and timely, they were necessary.

Your comment, "we'll see" if Singletary's motivational methods will work was only logical. We'll see because, so far nothing volatile Mike has done has worked. I mean, how many side line pep talks can one rely upon?

Mike is desperate and a little frightened. The 49ers are in real trouble and he doesn't know what to do about it. He certainly doesn't know much of anything about how to run an offense or what kind of offense to run.

The 49ers? 6-10 is probable, maybe worse. This is not a very good team with a not very good QB.

Well done, Lowell.

Some of these comments are pretty funny (reaction to the line of questioning). Great entertainment.
I am not going to forget that Sing gets paid big bucks to produce (Wins) and people like sports writers help ensure he gets paid big bucks by reporting on a largely meaningless contest in which a group of men play a somewhat silly game. Common people get real. I'm a life long 49er fan but I do remember daily I have to make my own living and Sing isn't going to support me. Seriously some of you need to grow up. He needs to be called out. You think the Yorks have the guts to discuss football with him? hahaha. Who makes Sing accountable????

user-pic

Lowell, I think your question and comments to Singletary were fair one's. For weeks Singletary, at some point during his weekly press conferances, has called this team "a playoff team", "a special team", "a team that will do special things this year" were Singletary's exact words. Your mild comments were taken as a threat to what Singletary is trying to sell us. Singletary's sarcastic come back after 4 losses in a row proves one thing, maybe Singletary isn't as confortable in his ablilties as a head coach we all thought and that it takes more than self dedication, will, and glorified motivational coach speak to win in the National Football League.
Bob in San Jose

Thanks Lowell, the 49ers are going backwards. At the beginning of the season I thought they had a pretty good team but now, they don't look good at all. Maybe they were down because of the great
game they played against the Colts but ended up losing.
The offense is better with that young quarterback but it still has a long way to go, and in this last game the defense looked weak.
Hang in there, keep asking the hard questions, and the fools who are putting you down because of it are exactly that: fools.

Lowell
Pissing someone off does not necessarily indicate a good bit of journalism has occurred. You seem to delight in casting yourself as the crusader journo asking the tough questions others fear to broach. I think you are more often just contentious for the sake of controversy.

Come on, Lowell. Please, the world does not need more T.J. Simers. Why are you baiting the man? Don't play stupid. He answererd your question. You know damn well what his answer meant. It is what he believes. He believes in his team. He's protective of his team. The problem is, you just had to try to show him how big your johnson is. My take (and you will disagree - that's cool) is you probably read about how Singletary went off on a reporter following the game, coupling that with how "comfortable" you thought he appeared, and you were not going to let anyone tread on you or your brethren. And were you really laughing on the radio about how you got Singletary unglued? I didn't hear you on the radio. If true, you should be better than that.

"So, that's me and Mikey. He sort of came unglued, no?"

Uh, no. You remind me of a guy with two black eyes from a fight who tells his friends how much he hurt the other guy's fists. You give yourself away by calling him "Mikey", which is a condescending effort to trivialize a guy who's just exposed one of the area's well-known jerk reporters. That you want approval for "winning" the dialogue is pure little boy, not professional journalism. You're more concerned with your own ego than the value of your questions or responses. No news there.

Let's see, Singletary coaches an NFL franchise. He's in the Hall of Fame. He has a Super Bowl ring. His players seem to really like him.

You used to write for a mediocre sports page in a city of half a million. Now you write for a local fishwrap. Your claim to fame is an uncanny ability to piss people off with your snotty attitude.

Next time you want to excercise this talent, how about taking a deep breath and SFU? Thanks...

Lowell has gotten to the point where he is increasingly irrelevant and wants to do anything to keep himself in the headlines. I don't know why he's so smug about his unanswerable question. Why doesn't he just watch the game on Thursday and see how the players react, instead of trying to have Singletary predict the future? I truly hope this guy is on his last legs reporting about the 49ers. He obviously doesn't like Singletary and it's evident on his never ending rants about Singletary tnanking God. What does that even have to do with football?

Lowell,

In reviewing the transcript and listening to the interview, you ultimately came across as unprofessional. Perhaps you have had too much exposure to the Raiders' front office and coaching staff. You're a good writer and you insist on respect from professional athletes and coaches alike. Respect is earned or lost on a day by day basis. Your lack of professionalism in this interview was akin to losing a close football game in the last minute of the game, because in your zeal, you committed an unsportmanlike conduct penalty, allowing the other team in scoring position.

I agree with some of your other critics, i.e, leave out your personal life, because nobody cares. Secondly, just stick to asking the tough questions, nothing more and nothing less.

Finally, let's ultimately cut to the chase: The 49ers are not that good. They have one All World player in Patrick Willis. They have some other talent in Crabtree and Davis. However, their QBs are mediocre at best, and the OL needs first aid. This is not Sing's fault. I believe he bring's out the best with what he has to work with. The 49ers simply don't have enough horses to move this stage coach forward.

Question boldly! Lowell, you are a bawl buster. I love it. Great job.

I don't know why I do it to myself. I keep saying I am not going to read this arrogant idiots articles anymore then I do. I don't know why you are employed. He answered the question and you acted like an idiot with your responses back. You probably ruined the wedding you attended also. The Niners need to ban you like the Raiders have, nothing positive ever comes from your forked tongue.

Nice job, Lowell! Only one in the room to call him on that motivational B.S.

Totally agree. Based upon his blog responses, he is obviously a pompous jerk.

Your posted transcript makes you sound like a wanna-be "hard-hitting journalist" and slightly petty. The exchange comes across more civil if you watch it on video.

If you are asking our opinion of the exchange, here is mine:

The posted transcript you posted makes you sound petty - Singletary seems to be done with the point, yet you continue to needlessly challenge him as if personally offended.

The exchange actually comes across more civil if you watch it on video.

Cohn, you're a crackhead.
