Minority rule?

Does this scenario sound familiar? A Republican chief executive negotiates a deal with legislative branch Democrats - the majority party - to address a major fiscal issue. The plan is shot down by the chief executive's fellow Republicans, using rules that allow the minority to thwart the will of the majority.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the California Legislature on the state's budget, right?

Yes, as a matter of fact, that's one example.

But the scenario is the same in Washington, where Senate Democrats blocked a bailout plan for the Big Three automakers despite an agreement between President Bush and congressional Democrats.

This seems like a good time for a segue to make an observation about all the commentary we've heard about majority rule since the election and Proposition 8.

But I'll leave that one alone for now, in part because (as I've already stated on this blog) I think it makes more political sense for opponents of Proposition 8 to try to overturn it at the ballot box rather than in court.

U.S. Senate Republicans have given us their alternative: Let the automakers file for bankruptcy and see if they can reorganize themselves. You may not agree, but it's a clearly articulated position. I wonder when Republicans in Sacramento will produce a no-new-taxes budget proposal that identifies $40-plus billion in spending cuts over the next 18 months. Until they do, they're just intransigent.

(One aspect of the Schwarzenegger/legislative Democrats' plan is a sales tax increase. You can vote on that in our instant poll on this page.)

So, if one follows the circuitous reasoning here, it appears that your point is that Republicans must take the lead in reducing state expenses. Hmmmn? In other words, the majority Democrats can continue to be fiscally irresponsible while the minority Republicans try to save us? How does that work?

Absurd commentary by a special-interest media blaming republicans/conservatives for the overall economic and political mess today encumbering all Americans. If there were no republicans/conservatives holding the line on taxes the US would be a 3rd world country with all citizens fighting for their lives. The democratic party / liberal way is to meld all people into one pot and treat all the same regardless of motivation or desires to be successful. The democratic party only desires to saddle /harness citizens as cash cows to milk more and more tax dollars to fund their special-interest ways. American citizens are running out of patience with government stupidity and complicit media manipulation.

My Opinions
I keep reading about people saying bail out the car makers, construction companies, goverment etc. Well get educated people research and learn. Bailouts don't work, unless we are are wealthy like the politicians who support them. The end result, raise taxes on everything. New York will instate 88 new taxes without a vote, and the liberal led Calif. will do the same, just watch you voted for these losers. The auto makers have been in trouble since 1980 and they haven't figured it out yet why, goverment loans after goverment loans. I recommend visiting zeitgeist/the movie and learn about the myth of money, and yes we are all wage slaves until we learn about the new paradigm. Taxation without representation, sound familiar?
Open your minds and stop believing the lies told to you, question everything and look behind the scenes, and don't give away your rights, big goverment is the enemy they are the ones who will steal your soul. We need leaders who are not from the elite class, but maybe the system is so corrupt now that it has to be destroyed for a new system to emerge...

Michael,

No, the point he is making is that they need to come up with a real plan or get out of the way. The problem with these Republicans is that they are willing to destroy our state for the sake of their ideology. If they don't want to pay to keep our state from collapsing, then they should move somewhere else.
